Abstract

Human beings live in a tension between the need to preserve precious traditions and to discover new values. Javanese people who live the tradition of kenduren for generations look for a new value to live in a new environment of life. Most research on the tradition of kenduren elaborates methods based on interpretation of the local community. This study will make use of  semantic analysis to interpret kenduren tradition based on philosophy of symbol introduced by Ferdinand de Saussure and Roland Barthes. The purpose of this study is to find new values of the tradition of kenduren. Then, the result of the research shall become a starting point to develop a theological reflection in the perspective of Christian faith as well asto formulate a pastoral program for the people who value and live this respective tradition of kenduren.

Abstract

Focus of this research is to examine main political characters of major prophets based on the book of Isaiah and Jeremiah. It explores a  method of exegetic analysis. The main result of this research indicates three political characters of the prophets. First, as mediator between Yahweh and Israel, prophets did not only work in religious-cultic affair, but also in a socio-political affair, especially in the monarchy period of Israel. Secondly, peace and prosperity among the people of God are significant fruits of prophetic works in society. Thirdlly,  as the chosen people of God, Isaiah and Jeremiah had led leaders of Judah to embody and actualize justice and peace as well as prosperity.  Prophets are important part of the people of God as well as political beings.

Abstract

Theological reflection on grace has a long history. Disput between Augustine and Pelagius on grace has been very well known. In modern times, controversy about grace was raised in the dispute between the dominicans (Thomism) and the Jesuits (Molinism). Learning from weaknesses in those debates, a theological reflection with the 'liberty' paradigm affirms that grace must be understood as nothing other than Godself in action and relation to human beings. Gratia increata should not be separated from gratia creata. Grace is given not only because of human sin, but because of an essence that longs for fulfillment. The working power of grace is not an absolute one as not to leave space for human freedom. Accordingly, grace should not be understood as merely an inward thing. The historical aspect of grace should not be ignored.

Abstract

Just war theory deals with justification of why and how the war should be fought. Justification can be either theoretical or historical. This essay will primarily deal with ethical justification of war and forms that warfare may or may not take. Methodology employed in this essay will be more historical, to explain how Catholic Church deals with the historical body of rules or agreements that have been applied in various wars across the ages while continuously promoting peace among the people. The goal of this essay is to argue and postulate that war, even an apparent evil, is not always an absolutely wrong option.

Abstract

Salvation is the prime goal of human life. Mitoni in Javanese culture is a tradition to seek for a help for mother and her child in her 7th month pregnancy to give birth safely. Catholic Church proclaims salvation for all people also through some rites. Naturally those rites offered by the Catholic Church shall have relevance to people rooted in their culture. It is important that there is an harmonious encounter between culture and those rites as well as a liturgy that reflects mutual understanding and complementarity between Christian faith and culture, especially through inculturation. That encounter seeks to find a new meaning of life enlightened by faith. In the tradition of Mitoni this shall occur through its ritual of siraman and liturgy that accompanies. New meaning points to an experience of salvation in different form and content rooted in a culture. How far an inculturation could help facilitate?
