Abstract

Members of the Catholic Church believe the Churchs teaching on Eucharistic celebration as the summit and the fount of the Churchs life. They even believe that the Eucharist is the summit and the fount of their faith lives. Unfortunately, the real meaning of this belief oftentimes is not well understood. As a result, the Eucharistic celebration does not really influence their way of thinking and their way of lives. This article tries to discover and present such meaning, with the hope that by having such understanding all members of the Catholic Churchincluding religious and priestswill make it as their way of thinking and living. The Eucharistic celebration will become the summit of the Churchs life if those who celebrate it have already tried to build a communion before the celebration takes place. It will become the fount of the Churchs life if those who celebrate it will try their best to become a Eucharistic people by becoming promotors of peace and solidarity.

Abstract

In Indonesia, the last twenty years many cases had happened that caused disharmony. Some radical groups attacked different communities due to their different point of view. According to PPIMs research, not few teachers in Java have taught intolerance to their students. In this context, using a descriptive research with both qualitative and quantitative approaches (observation, questionnaire, and interview), the writer undertook a scientific research in some main Catholics schools in Jakarta e.g. Strada, Van Lith I Elementary School, Tarakanita V Elementary School, Melania II Elementary School and Budi Mulia Elementary School which have been trying to teach tolerance and pluralism to students. These Catholic schools had made a serious effort to incorporate the subject of tolerance and pluralism into their curriculum especially based on the thought of Jean Piaget, Lawrence Kohlberg, James W. Fowler as well as Gravissimum Educationis. From the result of this research, the writer is convinced of their contribution to peaceful coexistence in the country. Learning from them, the writer proposes again the importance of interreligious education in our pluralistic society.

Abstract

The Catholic Church in Asia has declared triple-dialogue (dialogue with the Asian cultures, with religions and with the poor) as its way of being Church. The farmers belong to the poor in most of Asian countries, especially in Indonesia. This article tries to trace back the history of the Asian Churchs concern with the farmers, which are the representation of the poor. This concern has inevitably touched socio-cultural and socio-political dimensions of christian faith, which lead the christian communities to the most concrete social problem of the local communities, and at the same time connect them with global issues like hunger and food industrialization, or ecological crisis and sustainable farming.

Abstract

In the Encyclical of Ecclesia de Eucharistia, John Paul II states that Eucharist unites Church with God. In Eucharist, the presence of Christ is real. As a consequence, understanding Eucharist as merely series of rubrics is a form of reduction of the Eucharist. In the Encyclical, the Pope recalled the thought of Ignatius of Antioch on the Eucharist. Both John Paul II and Ignatius stated that Eucharist is a thanksgiving on the salvation of God. Eucharist is an invitation of God for the Church to live in the presence of God. The living experience of loving God supports the Church in transforming the world. The Church receives the power of Loving God in the Eucharist that strengthens each witness to live an exemplary Christian life here and now.

Abstract

Main purpose of politics is common participation for a common good, which allows the people to live well and fully in a society. Although Catholic Church may not confused religion and politics, she cannot ignore socio-political affairs. Thus, she is called to be witness of Christ who preached the Kingdom of God. Christian faith encourages the Church to have a certain attitude towards socio-political conditions in our society. To create a common good is indeed a vocation for all the faithful. This article aims to inquire the presence and role of laity as local leaders, as part of the Church's involvement in the political sphere, based on the observation in Banjarsari Village. Using a qualitative approach, this article aims to see the link between the involvement of the laity in politics with the teachings of the Catholic Church regarding politics. The results show that the values of churchs teaching have been greatly lived in their participation in a society. Faith helps them to build awareness of their social and political responsibility.

Abstract

Question on universality of the Eucharist stems from plurality of its celebration and understanding in various ecclesial communities. The question itself pertains to Eucharistic ecclesiology. How a Eucharistic celebration has built an ecclesial unity throughout its history, all over the world? This article aims to contribute to this respective discussion especially from the perspective of the teachings of Vatican II as well as the thoughts of St. John Paul II and Pope emeritus Benedict XVI. The discussion on the cosmic character as well as eschatological, social and cultural of the Eucharist demonstrates that the plurality of its celebration and understanding in various ecclesial communities are not necessarily confusing its universal meaning, but enriching it. This should happen especially when a Eucharistic celebration remain faithfully in expressing the mystery of Christ and therefore the nature of the Church.

Abstract

In this present age, many people tend to be indifferent toward their local culture. To embrace a contemporary culture, often uncritically, they overlook numerous religious and ethical values of their respective local culture. This has motivated the writer to do a research on Javanese culture particularly Ruwatan. Ruwatan is a long maintained Javanese ritual aimed to keep someone out of bad luck or misfortune. At the heart of Ruwatan, the teaching on creation and salvation are intertwined, which are also fundamental in Christian faith and life. Therefore this article will also discuss the Christian faith in the context of Javanese culture, especially in regard of its teaching on creation and salvation.

Abstract

The bread of life is the special theme in the Gospel of John. Even, among the Gospels, it is only the Gospel of John that gives this theme. Nowadays, there are many questions about the meaning of bread of life. Many scholars said that the bread of life has a connection with the eucharist. But, is there only one meaning of the bread of life? John Chrysostom dedicated his 44th homily to the 47th homily as the homily which tells about the bread of life. John Chrysostom offered another interpretation of the bread of life. For him, the bread of life tells about the Jesus himself facing the teaching of Arius (Arianism) that spreads in his service territory. The bread of life becomes an apology of the Nicean faith facing the Arianism. The emphasis is that the bread of life is the Son itself who has same nature (homo-ousios) with the Father. The faith of the Son guides all mankind to the ressurection and the everlasting life.
