Abstract

ABSTRACT  This skripsi  was made as requirement to obtain bachelor Degree in English in Sam Ratulangi University. This research is entitled Coherence of Donald Trump‟s speeches. It is an attempt to analyze and explain the items of coherence. The objectives of this research is to classify, and analyze the items of coherence of Donald Trump‟s speeches. There are three steps to finish this research. First step is preparation, the writer finds 4 speeches among others 1) Victory Speech of Donald Trump, 2) Donald Trump‟s Speech on National Security in Philadelphia, 3) Donald Trump Gives First Campaign Speech Since Hiring Bannon & Conway  ,  and 4) Donald Trump Law & Order Speech. Second step The writer reads it several times and gains an understanding of speeches and identify  aspects of coherence that exist in the 4 speeches in according to  the theory of Alba-Juez (2009), then classifies the speeches that  have been identified in this aspect of coherence. Third step the writer analyzes the data that has been collected and identified according to the theory of Alba-Juez (2009) on discourse analysis. The theory consist of two aspect, they are: mark Coherence and unmark coherence  The writer conducts this research by using descriptive method. The data were taken from the Speeches of Donald Trump and analyzed base on Juez‟ (2009). The finding show that there are 261 marked coherence ( 171 examples of addition, 23 examples of contrast, 11 examples of casuality, 15 examples of condition, 14 examples of conclusion, 7 examples of tempo, 9 examples of intensity, 2 examples of comparison, 9 examples of validation ) but there is no marked coherence on instrument and similiaritas. Abstract

ABSTRACT Thesis titled, "Pacific War In Memory Population Morotai September 1944-August 1945" is part of a series of Allied counterattack under the control of General Douglas MacArthur who chose the island of Morotai in North Maluku Allied military base, especially air strikes to the seizure of the Philippines and the efforts of neutralizing force enemy in eastern Indonesia. War involving the two powers, the Allies on the one hand and Japan on the other hand is told by residents Morotai experience and resources of the Pacific war literature in Morotai as confirmation. The focus of this study discusses the first, the war between the Allies and Japan at Morotai and the effect on the lives of the natives during the period September 1944 to February 1945. Second, the general state of the Allies and the natives in Borneo Operation period until the end of the war, February-August 1945. The results of this study indicate when the first period September 1944-February 1945, indigenous Morotai suffered badly from Allied-Japanese war, while in the second period, February-September 1945 socio-economic conditions began to improve indigenous, indigenous workers can work at Base Camp Allied. The schools will be opened, and daily activities as usual. Or the general state of the natives is much better than the Japanese occupation. Keywords:Japan, Allied, Indigenous, Base Camp

Abstract

The novel New Moon which was written by Sthepenie Meyer tells about the romantic story of Isabella Swan with the two myth creatures which are Edward Cullen the vampire man and Jacob Black the werewolf. This research entitled ?Analisis Tema Cinta dalam Novel New Moon karya Stephenie Meyer?. The aims at identifying, describing and analyzing the love theme of this novel. The method of this research is intrinsic approach. Intrinsic approach is used through the plot, character and setting to identify and describe the love theme of the novel. The result of this research reveals that human beings really need love and friends, and love need courageous, caring and understanding to overcome the problems and start a happy life.  New Moon explores different kinds of love. Apart from Bella?s one true romantic love for Edward, there is her loving friendship for Jacob who healed her pain after Edward left. Jacob, on the other hand, has romantic feelings for Bella, but accepts her friendship, hoping that Bella might be ready for something more in the future.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This skripsi is entitled “SLANG DALAM LAGU-LAGU CHRIS BROWN”. The aims of this research are to analyze, identify and classify the words that use slang words of Chris Brown’s songs. The purpose of this research is to analyze the types of slang by using song lyrics of Chris Brown’s songs.  The research uses descriptive method. The theory of Elissa Matiello (2008) and Leech theory (1998) are used in this research. The data were collected by listening to 10 songs by Chris Brown and reading the lyrics of the songs. The result of this research shows that there are four forms of slang in Chris Brown’s songs namely, blending, clipping, copy reduplicatives, variation. The results of this research also shows that there are four meanings of slang in Chris Brown’s songs namely, conceptual meaning with 63 data, connotative meaning with 2 data, thematic meaning with 2 data, social meaning with 2  data. ______________________________________________ Key words: Slang,Meaning, Chris Brown’s songs, Sociolinguistics.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study is about Indirect Speech in English and Batak language. The research questions are what are the types of indirect speech in English and Batak language and what are the similarities and defferences Indirect Speech in both languages. The aim of the research is an attempt to identify, to describe the types and to analyze the indirect speech in English and Batak language contrastively. In collecting data, the writer asks 4 informants, who can speak Batak Language well. The genders of informant are male and female approximately 45-60 years old who stay in Manado 20-30 year. In English data, the writer took an example of Indirect Speech from the book written by Quah, Josephin (1993). The writer collected data and identified the sentences which refers to indirect speech in English and Batak language. The writer also described the types of Indirect speech in English and Batak language and contrast them to find out the similarities and the differences of Indirect Speech by using the concept of Quick, dkk (1973:341) and Lado descriptively. The result of this investigation shows that English has indirect speech as well as Batak language and also has the similarities and differences. In the similarities, English and Batak language have the same in the types and form as quotation marks, question sentences, statements, commands, exclamations and also changes in the time and place. In the differences, English has changed in to be and auxiliary verbs, while Batak language has not. Key words:    Indirect Speech, English and Batak Language, Contrastive Analysis.

Abstract

ABSTRACT  This study entitled “Bentuk-bentuk –ing dalam “Australian Journal of Linguistics volume 23” is the study that focuses on morphosyntax analysis especially the forms and functions used in the article of the journal. It is an attempt to identify and analyze the forms and the functions of –ing in the Australian Journal. This research was done in several stages: preparation, data collection and data analysis. The data of –ing form were collected froms the article of the journal entitled “Origami in a Hurricane: Current Challenges to Linguistic” and were analyzed according to the theory of Aarts&Aarts (1982), Murphy (1994), Lado (2008) and Quirk (1972). The results of this study show the forms and the functions of –ing. There are 7 (seven) forms of –ing which are:  –ing clause that has explicit subject, -ing clause that has no  explicit subject, -ing as a participle clause, -ing as an adjective, -ing as a present continuous tense, -ing as a past continuous tense, and -ing as a gerund. And there are 2 (two) functions of –ing which are : -ing that has functions as an adverbial, and –ing as a gerund which has functions as a subject, an object and an object of preposition. The outcomes of this study are expected to give contributions of the language development in linguistic studies especially in analyzing –ing form and are expected to help the students or readers to have more understanding about the –ing form.  Keywords: Morphosyntax, form and function, -ing forms, -ing clause, Australian Journal of Linguistics vol.23

Abstract

ABSTRACTSThis research entitled “Taboo Words in English and Biak Language: A Contrastive Analysis” is analyzed and described in sociolinguistic field. The objectives of this research are to identify, classify and describe the types and meaning of taboo words and to analyze their differences and similarities. This research used a descriptive method. The data are analyzed using theory of Wardhaugh (1986:230) to find out the types, using Leech’s theory (1981:19) to find out the meaning, and were contrasted to find out the differences using Lado’s theory (1971:217). The significances of this research are theoretically, this research is expected to give contribution to the development of sociolinguistics especially in terms of taboo words and to practically it can be useful, for young Biak generation who want to learn taboo words in English and for foreign learners who want to study taboo words in Biak language. The result of this research shows that taboo words found in Biak language were classified into eight types, they are, sex, excretion, bodily function, death, animal, religion, and supernatural. The simillarities in English and Biak Language is the use of this word can cause misunderstanding and the differences of English and Biak Language is taboo words in Biak have levels whereas in English there is no level. This shows that the causes of using taboo words are to express the happiness, such as anger, emotion, and surprise, to joke, to insult, and to talk about sex. Keywords : Taboo Words; English and Biak Language; Contrastive Analysis

Abstract

ABSTRAKTION In dieser Untersuchung wurde die denotative, konnotative und mythische Bedeutungen  gesprochen. Die Untersuchung hat das Ziel um die denotative,  konnotative und mythische Bedeutungen auf dem Film „Who Am I Kein System Ist Sicher“ zu analysieren und zu beschreiben. Die Datenquelle wird aus dem Film  „Who Am I Kein System Ist Sicher“  gesammelt. In diesem Fall verwendet die Untersucherin die deskriptive Methode, um die Daten zu analysieren. Als die theoretische Grundlage verwendet die Untersucherin die Meinungen von Barthes und Saussure. Barthes hat sein semiotischen Konzept in zwei Ebenen eingeteilt, das heiβt denotative und konnotative Bedeutung. Es gibt auch Mythe, die das Ergebnis von konnotative Bedeutung sind.Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchung sind denotative und konnotative Bedeutungen, die in den untersuchten Daten immer vorhanden sind. Die Mythe existiert nicht immer in allen Daten. Die denotative Bedeutung in diesem Film ist Benjamins Fähigkeit auf dem Gebiet des Computers, die ihn in eine gefährliche Position bringt. Die konnotative Bedeutung des Films ist Social Engineering. Die Mythe des Films ist, dass übermäβige Bessenheit zu schwerwigenden Konsequenzen führt.                                                            Stichwörter: Denotative, Konnotative, Mythe, Who Am I Kein System Ist Sicher.

Abstract

ABSTRACT             This study is an attempt to analyze, describe, and contrast English and Taa language which focuses on the interrogative sentences in relation to their forms and functions in both languages. The data of the English language were collected from books by Aarts (2001) Azar (1996, 2003), Downing and Locke (2006), and Lou (2006), whereas the data of Taa language were collected by interviewing and recording using a mobile phone recording, resulting in the collected audio materials as the primary data. The data were then analyzed and described. To find out the forms and functions of interrogative sentences, the writer used theory of interrogative sentences based on Aarts (2001), Azar (1996, 2003), Downing and Locke (2006), Lou (2006), and Parera (1988). After that, the data were contrasted by using Lado’s theory (1971). The results of this study show that these two languages have differences as well as similarities. There are eight similarities and fifteen differences between both languages.       Keywords: Interrogative Sentences, English, Taa Language, Contrastive Analysis.
