Abstract

                                                    ABSTRACT     This research entitled “Penggambaran Tragedi Pahlawan dalam Film Gladiator oleh Ridley Scott” is intended as a requirement to accomplish the ”Sarjana” degree at Faculty of Humanities Sam Ratulangi University Manado. The objectives of this research are to identify and analyze tragic hero characteristics on film Gladiator by Ridley Scott. The writer uses qualitative research method with film and narrative elements approach in order to identify and classify how it is support the representation of tragic hero on theme, characterizations, conflict, and settings through the Gladiator film. The writer uses the theory of tragic hero by Aristotle as the main theory to analyze the tragic hero in Gladiator film. The result of this research shows that the element of narrative on theme, characterizations, conflict and settings being depicted through the film in order to build the environment of tragedy. This environment helps showing the tragedy process of the main character in the film while picturing the idea of tragic hero based on Aristotle theory. Maximus as the main character in Gladiator film endures the tragic hero completely based on Aristotle theory. As the film Gladiator runs to the end of the film, Maximus endures the elements of tragedy in several specific scenes to picture hamartia, hubris, peripertia, anagronisis, nemesis, and carthasis.Keyword: Tragic Hero, Gladiator, Film, Aristotelian, Ridley Scott.

Abstract

ABSTRACT   The research which entitled ‘Verbs in English and Sangir Language: A Contrastive Analysis’ aims at identifying and analyzing the kinds of verbs in these two languages and finding out the differences between both languages. The English data have been collected from English books and articles in Tempo Co. Jakarta, whereas the data of Sangihe Language have been collected from informants and song of Sangir language. In English the kinds of verbs may be classified by complement verb and form of verb which involves predicating or linking verbs, transitive or intransitive verbs, reflexive verbs, auxiliary or lexical verbs and finite or non-finite verbs and in Sangir language it concern predicating or linking verbs, transitive or intransitive verbs, lexical verbs and finite verbs. Theoretically, this research gives contribution toward the knowledge development in contrastive analysis especially verbs in English and Sangir language. Practically, this research can be used as a reference for further research. Key words: Kinds of Verbs in English, Sangir Language and Contrastive Analysis

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled “Functions and Categories of Simple Sentences in English Teaching Forum Journal” is a syntactic analysis which describes the functions and categories of the immediate constituent in simple sentences. This research is an attempt to identify, classify, and analyze the simple sentences in the Journal in terms of the functions and categories. This is a descriptive study that used the concept of Aarts and Aarts (1982). The function is a linguistic unit that plays its role in a larger linguistic structure and the category is a linguistic unit as something that has individual characteristic. The result of this research shows that, the functions found externally are subject, predicate, and adverbial. Internally, the functions found are predicator and complement which consist of direct object, subject attribute, and predicator complement. The function of indirect object, object benefactive, and object attribute are not found in this journal. The categories found externally are noun phrase, verb phrase, adjective phrase, adverb phrase, and prepositional phrase. Internally, only the structures of the noun phrase which is analyzed. The internal structure of noun phrase found are pre-determiner, post-determiner, pre-modifier, post- modifier and head (H). Abstract

ABSTRACT   This reseach entitled Commisive Act in the novel Herzog by Saul Bellow. In pragmatic field, communication is a fission of problem. Leech (1983) devide the speech situation into five aspects one of them is speech act. Speech act is a communication act. Austin (1962) verify the speech act into three categories that are locutionary act, illocutionary act, and perlocutionary act. Austin classifies the utterance according to illocutionary meaning that are verdictives, executives, commisives, behabitives and expositives. Commisives act is a speech act that ask the speaker doing something in the future such as promising. This research attemps to identify, classify, and analyze the commisive act in the novel Herzog by Saul Bellow. The identified data are analyzed according to Austin theory, and in analyzing the data, the writer uses descriptive method. The result of this research show the kinds and function of the commisive act according to Austin. The result of this research show that the kinds of these entire commisive act found in the novel are persuade, offering, engage, plan, bet, agree, persuade, oppose, espouse, guarantee, engage, promise and swear. Abstract

A B S T R A C T Conjunction is a word used to connect words, phrases and clauses. Conjunction shows the relationship between sentence elements that they connect. This study is an attempt to describe and analyze the conjunction in the novel “Pride and Prejudice” written by Jane Austen. The writer analyzed and classified these conjunctions according to their types and functions which the data have been taken from the novel. This investigation has been done through bibliography research and it used the concept of Aarts and Aarts. The results showed that there are three kinds of conjunction in the novel “Pride and Prejudice”, they are coordinating conjunctions, subordinating conjunctions and correlative conjunctions. The coordinating conjunction can link two words ‘they are silly and ignorant like other girls’, two phrases ‘her ease and good spirits increased’ and two clauses ‘jumping after stiles and springing over puddles’. The subordinating conjunction can link a clause with another clause or other constituents in a sentence ‘I had hope that our sentiments coincided’, and the correlative conjunction are coordinating words that work in pairs to join words ‘neither Jane nor Elizabeth’, phrases ‘can tell us whether it is like or not’ and clauses ‘she was perfect either making some inquiry, or looking at his page’, or whole sentence. It is expected that this study can be continued by students of English Department and those who are interest in learning one of the aspects of English, in this case conjunction. Abstract

ABSTRACTS Metaphor is a figurative language that takes two different things by identifying one with another. By using metaphor, it helps the speakers or the writers to give a clear description through comparison. This research aims at finding the metaphor in the novel The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks. The purpose of this research is to get the form of metaphor and the meaning of metaphor through sentences that had been analyzed. The data have been taken from the sentences from all pages of this novel; then they are identified in terms of their forms based on Wahab’s concept and analyzed by based on Bloomfield’s concept about metaphor. The method which is used for this study is descriptive method. In collecting the data, the writer focuses on identifying sentence, phrases, or words. The result shows that the forms of metaphors that the writer found are: Nominative subjective, nominative objective, and predicative metaphors. The result of this study shows that these metaphors contain a certain meaning depending on the sentences where the metaphors are located. ____________________________________________________________________ Key Words : Metaphors, Semantic Analyze, Novel : The Notebook.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Language is always related with human. Therefore, to learn more about language is very important to us. Linguistics is the study of language. The study of patterns to make sentences is syntax. This study is entitled “Kalimat – kalimat Minor dalam Film Mr. & Mrs. Smith Karya Doug Liman”. The writer used the theory of Charless Hockett (1958) to identify and analyze the data that have been found in the film. According to Hockett, minor sentence is not complete sentence. There are four types of minor sentence, subjectless minor sentence, vocative minor sentence, aphoristic minor sentence and fragmen minor sentence which are sub categorized into three parts, they are completive fragmen minor sentence, special completive fragmen minor sentence and exclamatory minor sentence. The result of this research shows that there are only three types of minor sentence in the film, such as subjectless minor sentence, vocative minor sentence and fragmen minor sentence. This study is expected to provide more information about minor sentence to the readers.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research entitled “Analisis Kesalahan Pronouns oleh Siswa Kelas XII Bahasa SMA N 1 Tombariri” is an attempt to identify, classify and analyze errors in the use of pronouns made by students of SMA N 1 Tombariri. The method used in this research is descriptive. Aarts and Aarts’ (1982) theory is used to identify and classify the types of pronouns and Ellis (1998) theory is used to analyze the types of pronouns errors made by students of SMA N 1 Tombariri. The data of this research were taken from the students’ assignment. The result of this research shows that there are three kinds of errors made by the students. First, omission is to omit a pronoun that is required for an utterance to be considered grammatical. Second, misinformation is the use one pronoun unproperly. Third, misordering is putting the pronouns in an utterance in the wrong order.   Keywords : Error analysis, pronouns, omission, misinformation, misordering

Abstract

ABSTRACT   This study is an attempt to find out the forms and analyze the meaning of “Two-Word Verbs in the Album Stand Up and Scream by Asking Alexandria. The data were analyzed based on the theories of Coghill (2003: 114) and McCarthy and O’Dell (2007: 6). The method used in this research was descriptive method. The data of two-word verbs were taken from the lyrics in the album Stand Up and Scream by Asking Alexandria. The result of this study shows that there are 61 of two-word verbs found in the 15 songs, there are categorized into 3 forms based on the theory of Coghill (2003: 114) Transitive separable two-word verbs (there are 43 forms), Transitive inseparable two-word verbs (there are 14 forms)  and Intransitive two-word verbs (there are 4 forms). Based on the theory of Randall (1982: 330), each two-word verbs has it’s own means. Keywords: Two-word verbs, Transitive & intransitive phrasal verbs, Asking Alexandria.

Abstract

ABSTRACT   The research is entitled “Analisis Karakter dalam Novel Fifty Shades Darker oleh EL. James”. There are two main problems o be analyzed those are; “what are characters of the main characters as revealed in Fifty Shades Darker” and “How is the method of characterization applied in the novel”. This research only focuses on the two main characters Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey. The purpose of this research are to identify human characters, to analyze and describe the characterization. In identifying characters, the writer used Roberts’ theory about characters, in analyzing and describing the characterization, the writer used Perrine’s theory about direct presentation and indirect presentation. The result of this research show that there are several human character found in the novel such as Tough, plain, shy, emotional, sensual, firm, fragile, romantic, overt, honest etc. The method of characterization found in this novel can be divided in two types: direct presentation and indirect presentation.   Keywords: Character analysis, Fifty Shades Darker, Intrinsic Approach.
