Abstract

This research investigates the apology’s utterances performed by EFL students when they are coming late to the classroom. The politeness theory of Lakoff and the elements of Apology proposed by Smith are used as the basis for approaching this topic. This research is conducted to deeply describe (1) the kinds of elements of apology found in students’ utterance of apology and (2) how the elements of apology represent the politeness principles. It utilizes descriptive qualitative research since it is conducted to obtain a deep and detailed analysis of the object, which is in the form of utterances and words. The data is taken from the students of Faculty of Humanities majoring in English Language and Letters Department in Maulana Malik Ibrahim State Islamic University, Malang. The results demonstrate that there are at least 3 elements found and maximumly 6 elements involved. Students generally realize that what they are doing suffered other party but the utterances do not fully mean apologizing even some indicate good apology. Further, it enables to conclude that modesty maxim of politeness principle is the dominant maxim found in this study. The politeness principle is well represented by the elements of apology found in the students’ utterances.

Abstract

This study aims to describe Queen Zaleha attitude during his life when facing the war of independence. The research method uses qualitative methods with descriptive research specifications, the research object of the life story of Queen Zaleha. The data collection techniques used are notes, interviews, and documentation. Techniques analysis use the semiotic model of Roland Barthes. The results showed that Queen Zaleha's stance was: a) conscious, b) clever, c) brave, d) fighting spirit, e) confident.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to develop a learning model of participative and collaborative scientific writing skill to promote students’ social and emotional intelligence. This research is also intended to produce skilled graduates in terms of scientific writing and to enable the graduates to possess social and emotional intelligence. This is developmental research. In order to achieve research objectives, a developmental model of A Recursive Reflective Design and Development Model (R2D2) and Research Development Research (RDR) are used. The data consist of qualitative data and quantitative data. The technique used to analyze the data involved domain analysis techniques to analyze the qualitative data, and statistical analysis techniques for the  quantitative data. The result of this developmental research is a participative and collaborative learning model of scientific writing to develop students' social and emotional intelligence. This research also has delivered a distinctive developmental product compared to a conventional learning model, including concept orientation, concept exploration, concept interpretation, concept application, and evaluation. In addition, a participative and collaborative learning model of scientific writing skills should be developed continuously and be promoted to students who are interested in scientific writing, as it can be used to develop students' social and emotional intelligence. On the other hand, lecturers can utilize this product to improve the quality of the learning process, the results of learning scientific writing and developing students' social and emotional intelligence in which this model can be employed as an alternative model to enrich the learning process.

Abstract

literacy culture plays an important role in the development of a learning society that lives in the global era or is called the current century of creative-innovative knowledge. The history of human civilization proves that a great nation whose people have a high literacy culture. Literacy culture is hampered by the not yet forming mentality of students' reading and writing culture. Literacy culture must be instilled early in students to ingrained for the sake of achieving a superior generation, quality, and have a strong mind and character to face global challenges. Global developments in various scientific disciplines that are felt now certainly must be recognized by all parties, especially in the school environment. The school environment must make literacy culture the first and foremost door to build the progress of human civilization, society, and the Indonesian people. The mastery of literacy culture for these civilizations is important and should receive serious attention to make their lives more developed/modern, meaningful, and advanced both personally, socially, spiritually, and culturally. One of the ways to achieve and make students mentality is literacy culture is through literature. Literature becomes a creative work that has a distinctive or unique style in the use of its language. Literary creative works record a variety of phenomena in the social life of both real and fictitious ones that instill educational values. Through these various advantages, literary works must be used as an effective stimulus to foster a culture of student literacy. Therefore, literature must be used as the basis for the first and foremost doorstep for the achievement of a superior generation of cultural literacy mentality.

Abstract

The goal of this research is to determine the persuasive language in the business advertorial advertisements in online daily news which it has seen from persuasive language forms (included diction and expressions), persuasive techniques, and discourse structures. The design of the study is using a qualitative approach and used a content analysis study. The research findings indicate that persuasive language forms and persuasive techniques used to give profit, explain product competition, and establish product quality. Discourse structures in business advertorial advertisements have two major patterns, namely conventional and unconventional.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the ability to write BIPA students from Taiwan at beginner level. Before attending BIPA learning, they experienced difficulties when writing. Based on the placement test, the results of their abilities are beginner level. This research needs to be done because of the increasing interest of Taiwanese students to learn Indonesian. By conducting research, it can provide reference materials in making curriculum, teaching materials, and materials for BIPA students from Taiwan for beginner level. In this study using a type of descriptive qualitative research that examines Taiwanese students who are studying BIPA at the Institute of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, State University of Malang. The results of this study have found data that shows the writing ability of beginner-level BIPA students from Taiwan. Data shows that BIPA students from Taiwan have been able to write sentences using three structural variations, namely 1) S-P, 2) S-P-O, and 3) S-P – OK. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that BIPA students from Taiwan level beginners have the ability to write basic sentences with three different structures but the SP structure that is most understood and can be used in writing well. In addition, severalarise problem in the learning process, namely 1) the influence of the first language and 2) minimal mastery of the language structure.
