Abstract

This article aims to explain the influence and impact of the oil and gas industry on communities based on their life experiences, which were studied using the photovoice method. Data collection was conducted through participant observation around the oil and gas industry area in Tapung Hulu District, Riau. Through the presentation of photographs taken by informants (photovoice), this study provides a space for the community to voice their experiences visually, document their daily realities, and convey them so that they can be heard and followed up by policy makers. The findings show that the presence of the oil and gas industry has opened up job opportunities for women, but at the same time has given rise to various social and environmental problems, such as the vulnerability of buildings to cracks and limited access to clean water. In addition, the findings also reveal that the corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs that are being implemented are still charitable in nature and are not yet oriented towards sustainable social empowerment. This article contributes to the anthropological literature on the relationship between the oil and gas industry and local communities by offering a photovoice methodological approach to connect the experiences of communities in a contextual and reflective manner.

Abstract

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the mental well-being of young remote workers in Malang City through social interactions, expectations, and self worth. As an evolving work system in Indonesia, remote work still presents challenges, both in terms of technology and social dynamics. Young employees who are in the career development stage at the age of 23-29 are often caught up in trying to achieve high productivity and maximum happiness, which sometimes triggers burnout. Through an anthropological approach with qualitative methods, this research utilises semi-structured interviews by highlighting remote employee perspectives on mental well-being and considering the values and experiences of work culture in a virtual work environment. The different experiences and definitions of well-being for young remote employees depend on their individual perspectives, backgrounds and working conditions, making the results of this study subjective. The results show that the mental well-being of remote workers cannot be separated from the Javanese social and cultural context that emphasises collective happiness. On that basis, this research is expected to contribute to the development of subjective well-being studies in the field of anthropology.

Abstract

The degradation of peat swamp forests that resulted in forest and land fires that hit Central Kalimantan in 1997, 2015, 2019, and 2023 was the beginning of the marginalization of women in its governance. Women lost their sources of food, clean water, and family livelihoods. As a result, women are faced with a confusion considering the burden of care that is pinned on them as a result of the gender division of labor in the family. But on the other hand, they are not equipped with sufficient knowledge in dealing with this problem. This research uses a feminist political ecology framework and ethnographic methods with Ngaju Dayak women living along the Katingan River to reveal the process of marginalization of women in disaster governance, especially in the aspects of disaster prevention and mitigation. The feminist political ecology framework helps to reveal the gendered dimensions of science, the right to live and work in a healthy environment, and the responsibility to protect the place of residence from all environmental hazards. The gender dimension that has been pinned and embodied to women is not considered in this matter. In addition, this approach must also recognize the political context referring to the way power constructs a gender narrative and the various policies that try to embody it through literature study. Women’s marginalization could be traced from the emergence of various intervention programs that introduced by the state and its auxiliaries and targeted the adjacent peat swamp forest community. Those interventions brought a further women’s marginalization and took a vantage point from the sociopolitical landscape alteration caused by mass forest fires.

Abstract

The moon cake tradition is an important cultural practice among the Chinese ethnic community, carried out to welcome the arrival of autumn each year. This tradition has a long history and has undergone various social, cultural, and political dynamics. However, in the contemporary context, the understanding and meaning of the moon cake tradition among the Chinese ethnic community in Bogor has shifted, especially between generations. Factors such as cultural localization, differences in beliefs, and a lack of intergenerational literacy regarding Chinese cultural traditions have influenced the continuity of this practice. This study aims to understand the contemporary development of the moon cake tradition through the perspective of traditional re-creation in the Chinese ethnic culture in Bogor. This study uses a qualitative approach with participatory observation and in-depth interviews. The conceptual framework used includes the concepts of traditional recreation, the moon cake tradition, and local Chinese ethnic identity. The results show that the moon cake tradition is still practiced routinely every year by the Chinese ethnic community in Bogor across generations. Practices include rituals to worship ancestors, eating moon cakes with family, and the tradition of exchanging cakes or gifts. The moon cake tradition is contemporarily interpreted as an effort to maintain family relationships, strengthen ethnic identity, and express gratitude and respect for ancestors in the context of cultural change.
