ABSTRACTSuryanto et al., 2010. The potential of phenolic antioxidant from Myrtaceae family as sunscreen active compound. The objectives of study was to determine free radical scavenging activity and measure sun protective activity of the phenolic extract in Myrtaceae family in vitro. Analyses of phytochemicals were based on total phenolic, flavonoid and condensed tannins. The antioxidant activities of extracts were determined by free radical 1.1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. Syzygium polyanthum, clove and Eugenia aquea powder was extracted with methanol 80% at room temperature for 24 hours. Free radical scavenging activity of each extracts evaluated at 100-200 ppm level. The higher total phenolic and tannin content was find clove leave extract, followed by Eugenia aquea leave extract and Syzygium polyanthum leave extract. Contrary, Eugenia aquea leave possessed higher contents of flavonoid than clove extract and Syzygium polyanthum extract. The clove leave extract showed higher DPPH free radical scavenging than Syzygium polyanthum and Eugenia aquea leave extract at 200 ppm level. Free radical scavenging activity of three extracts increased with increasing concentration of extract. The result showed also that clove phenolic extract possessed high potential as ingredient of sunscreen followed by Eugenia aquea and Syzygium polyanthum leave phenolic extract. Result of measuring the sun protection factor (SPF) were 34.38; 33.98 and 7.92, resvectively. These result suggested that three extracts in Myrtaceae family leave having potential as antioxidant and sun protection factor (SPF) value is high that including in low protection (6-8) and medium protection (>15).Keywords : antioxidant, Myrtaceae family, phenolic extract, sunscreen

ABSTRACTLengkong, H dan M. F. O. Singkoh. 2010. Antibacteria effect on sea algae Gracilaria edulis (S.G. Gmelin) P.C Silva from Nain island sea, North Minahasa regency.Marine algae possess the biggest part of marine plants in which they could morphologically be classified into thallus plants (Thallophyta) due to having no difference in sceletal structures, such as root, stem and leaf. Despite different shapes, the algae body structure consists only of stem called thallus. Algae are non-vascular plants which photosyntesize using chlorophyll a and have simple reproductive structures. They are unicellular and multicellular. This study was aimed at determining antibacterial activities of Gracilaria edulis. The study was carried out in approximately 6 months, January to June. Species Gracilaria edulis were collected from the coastal waters of Nain Island, North Minahasa Regency, North Sulawesi. These were studied in laboratory. The antibacterial test showed that the test solution of G. edulis an antibacterial activity on 5 test bacteria..Keywords: antibacteria, algae, Gracilaria edulis

ABSTRACTKomalig et al., 2010. Mercury contamination within Talawaan river sediment.Sediment plays an important role in controlling concentrations of heavy metals which accumulate in body tissues aquatic biota. Contamination of mercury in river sediments due to natural processes (weathering of mineralized rocks), the traditional processing of gold (amalgamation), or industrial processes that use raw materials containing mercury. This research is descriptive analytical that is describing the Hg content in the sediment. Sample preparation is done by following the instructions of JPHA, followed by analysis of sediment samples using AAS-CV. Then using Anova test to see the relationship of Hg distribution in the river from the mine based on the distance. Results showed that total Hg in sediment Hg concentrations found differences based on distance, where the farther from the mine, the smaller the concentration of Hg.Keywords : sediment, heavy metals, Hg, river

ABSTRACTGugule, S. and F. Fatimah. 2010. Characterization of spices virgin coconut oilA study has been carried out to find out the effect of some spices type on quality and characteristic of fatty acid of virgin coconut oil (VCO). The test of spice VCO quality conducted with the determination of iodine and acid number, water content and peroxide number. The profile of fatty acid of VCO was tested with the liquid gas chromatography, using the internal standard of margaric acid. The experimental result showed that control and spice VCO that is VCO nutmeg, leaf of salam, sweet basil and galingale have the quality fulfilling standard APCC, except number iodine. As compared to control, the addition of spice at making VCO nor have an effect to fatty acid percentage in VCO, but having an effect to reduction fatty acid content in VCO (calculated in mg / 100g sample)..Kata kunci : Characterization, virgin coconut oil, spices

ABSTRACT Gusti, D. R. and A. Wuntu, 2010. Absorption of Cupper (II) ion using tea leaves dregs as adsorbent. An investigation on the adsorption of copper (II) by using the dregs of tea leaves as an adsorbent. The research results are obtained that the adsorption of metal ions Cu (II) with a concentration of 500 mg /L at the dregs of tea leaves as adsorbent 0.1 g for 20 minutes has a contact time of equilibrium at 190-200 minutes. This adsorption followed the Freundlich isotherm model. Adsorption process is highly dependent on initial concentration, the higher the initial concentration of metal ions Cu (II), the higher the concentration of metal ions Cu (II) adsorbed. Adsorption capacity of Cu (II) on waste tea leaves are estimated from graphs isoterm adsorption worth more than 45 mg for every gram of adsorbent. Keywords : adsorption, ion copper (II), waste tea leaves, and adsorption capacity

ABSTRACTPatty, W. 2010. Productivity Analysis and Litter Decomposition Rate Mangrove leaves in the Village Bahoi, North Minahasa Regency.Mangrove forest at Bahoi Village are still left under natural conditions, which are dominated by Sonneratia alba, Rhizophora apuculata and Bruguierra gymnorrhiza. The highest value of leaf decomposition rate found in R. apiculata (2 gr / week) and S. alba (1.75 gr / week). The leaves of S. alba species were decomposed most rapidly than R. apiculata. Analsysis productifity was based about 3 months data collections. Mean litter productivity is estimated ± 2.55 gram/m2/ day. A large amount of organic materials from the mangrove can transfer into the sea by tides currents. Nutrients such as nitrate and phosphor are released to the water from mangrove sediments as result of deposit of organic matter. Keywords: productivity, mangrove, Minahasa Utara Regency

ABSTRACTKumaunang et al., 2010. Characterization of transcript genome product from Chaperone Bacillus sp. RP1.Protein folding is facilitated by chaperone molecule an folding catalyst. The aim of this research was to characterize the gene product of thiol-disulfide oxidoreductase gene from thermophylic organism Bacillus sp. Method used in this research were isolation and purification of deducted gene and characterization of gene product. The result showed that isolated gene has 1.4 kbp in length. Characterization of gene product indicated three proteins, Bdbdred, Bdbdox, and Etda, that have thioredoxin and DsbA motifs, and also active site and bonding site with Zn. Structure prediction of these three proteins showed similarity among them. Keywords : chaperone, thiol-disulfide oxidoreductase, thioredoxin, DsbA, Bdbd

Total solid suspended content was analyzed in nine stations at Malalayang river stream. Total solid suspensions and turbidity of water were analyzed using Horiba U-10. The result shows that the highest total solid suspensions were in station 1, 4 and 7. High total solid suspensions caused by its position near to the land. Total solid suspensions Malalayang river have uncertain trend. Turbidity influence to total solid suspended of Malalayang river.Kata kunci : total solid suspended, turbidity, river, Malalayang
