Abstract

The uncertainty of ocean conditions, such as currents and waves, affects the maneuver ability and stability of vessel on the water. For this reason, a fishing vessel should fulfil specific prerequisites, such as strong vessel construction, good stability to extreme oceanic conditions, good maneuver ability, and thrust.  “Aldeis” boat has a dimension of 15.50 m long, 2.80 m wide, and 1.10 m deep. Average ratio of those parameters was 5.50 for L/B, 13.05 for L/D and 2.37 for B/D, rspectively.  The coefficient values of the boat shape were Cb = 0.54 for Cb, Cp = 0.73 for Cp, 0.74 for C and 0.79 for C3, respectively.  The boat possessed a maximum shakes to 140 of the boat slant when the righting arm was at 0.20 m of the center point.

Abstract

This study was aimed to determine the effect of the dilution ratio of sperm with optimal NaCl and fructose on the motility of the catfish, Clarias sp., spermatozoa, fertility and hatchability of eggs. Catfish used in this study consisted of one parent pairs (male and female weight of 1000 grams weight of 1500 g). NaCl and fructose solution were diluted with aquabidest. The observation was conducted on the motility of spermatozoa, fertility and hatchability of eggs. The experimental design used completely randomized design (CRD). Dilution ratio is 1: 0, 1, 20, 1: 40, 1; 60, 1: 80, and 1: 100 with replicated 3 times. Observations were carried out soon after the sperm mixed with diluents. Fertility occurred 12 hours after fertilization. Egg hatchability was observed after fertilization. The results showed that the ratio of dilution gave significant effect on the sperm motility, fertility and hatchability of the eggs. This research found that the dilution ratio 1: 60 was the best treatment with the average sperm motility of 96. 66%, fertility of 71, 66 5% and egg hatchability of 70%.

Abstract

This study focused on the economic and the social impacts of the reclamation program for the traditional fishermen who live along the coastal area of Manado City set the reclamation program, particularly Wenang Selatan, Titiwungen, and Bahu-Malalayang, using direct observation and guided interview techniques to selected respondent. The results found that in economic aspect, the local people gained higher income before reclamation than after it; in social aspect, the former fishermen had to alter their profession to the one they did not know or were sent outside the city, even far from social facilities, such as school, health services, etc.

Abstract

Good quality carp seed supply in relation to number, time, price and location is a crucial factor for the success of the fish cultivation. To ensure the availability of fish seed under these requirements, this study was technically directed to increase the fertility rate, the hatchability rte and the survival of larvae and post larvae. This study was aimed to find good substrates for spawning and egg hatching of the common carp, Cyprinus carpio L. Were used at Sugar Palm Fiber and Hydrilla sp. as substrates for the egg attachment. For this, males and females of 1:1 weight ratio were put into the spawning pond. Eggs attached to both susbtrate types were counted. Water quality parameters, such as temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH, were also recorded. Results showed that common carps had higher preference to Hydrilla sp. to attach their eggs than to Sugar Palm Fiber (kakaban). Egg hatching is also higher in Hydrilla sp than in Sugar Palm Fiber (kakaban), even though the degree of conception, however were not significantly different.

Abstract

This study was aimed at identifying the seagrass, and knowing the seagrass community structure in the coastal waters of Yamdena Island, West Southeast Maluku. This study was carried out from July to September 2007. The highest density was shown by C. rotundata in Olilit, T. hemprichii in Lauran and Kabiarat, and E. acoroides in Kabiarat and Watmasa. Furthermore, the highest abundance of seagrass occurred by C. rotundata in Olilit, H. pinifolia in Lauran, T. hemprichii in Kabiarat, and E. acoroides in Watsama. The highest occurrence was shown by C. rotundata in Olilit, E. acoroides in Lauran, T. hemprichii in Kabiarat and Lauran, and H. pinifolia dan H. ovalis in Watmasa. Keywords: Seagrass, community, Yamdena Island, West Southeast Maluku

Abstract

Pearl oysters, Pinctada maxima, are known as South Sea Pearl. Breeding is an important factor in intensive culture pearl oyster. In breeding, spawning became determining factor. The purpose of this research was to understand the effect of temperature decrease on the spawning level and to compare the treatment of water temperature decrease and increase on spawning level of pearl oyster P. maxima. The result showed that temperature decrease treatment influenced the success of the spawning level. Both water temperature decrease and increase had similar effect on the spawning level of the pearl oyster.

Abstract

Trolling board is an important troll line accessory which can produce swinging and diving movements of the lure. A laboratory study on the effect of trolling board main line position and current speed on swinging and diving movements was done in a water circulating tank at the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science, Sam Ratulangi University. At low speed, the widest swing reached at main line position near the center of trolling board, but at high speed, it reached main line position near the fore tip. Swinging frequency decreased with the current speed. The depth of diving increased as the main line position got closer to the tip and increased with current speed.

Abstract

A study on the functional role of the sea urchin, Salmacis belli, on seagrass bed near the coast of Kema, North Minahasa Regency, was done by analyzing the gut contents, the food preference, and the feeding periodicity. Sea urchins and plants were collected from the seagrass bed by snorkeling along a 100 M transect line with 30 quadrates randomly placed. The feeding periodicity was determined from the gut index in 24 hours with 3 hour intervals.  The results showed that the sea urchin S. belli fed mainly on seagrass Thallasia hemprichii, Enhalus acoroides and Halimeda opuntioa. The feeding periodicity data indicated that the sea urchins actively fed in the day. The grazing capacity of the sea urchin was not affected by their body size.  In high density, sea urchins could potentially cause negative impact on the seagrass bed (i.e., destruction of the meadow).

Abstract

Mollusks are one of benthic organisms that live on the sea bottom, often on the roots, stems, and leaves of plants. Hydroids (Aglaophenia cupressina), one constituent of coral reef organisms in the waters of Siladen Island, Manado, North Sulawesi, which is also an organism that has stingy nematocysts for divers in the region where they live, is a habitat of mollusks. Hydroids sampling was done by Scuba diving at 5 different depths, reef-flat, 5 m, 10 m, 15 m, and 20 m, respectively. All mollusks specimens were taken to the laboratory for species identification. Results found three species of epibiont mollusks on the hydroids, in which the bigger the hydroid size the larger the volume, and higher number was found. This results from that the mollusks use the hydroids as a shelter from predator attacks, strong currents and waves, and food search.
