Abstract

The phenomenon of gemstone or in Indonesia known as “batu akik” happened greatly in the early to the middle of 2015 and has become attention among the people in Indonesia. Although it cannot be identified precisely when the phenomenon of people massively wearing and collecting gemstones has begun, this study aims to present an early review of this phenomenon seeing from linguistics study. This study revealed three linguistics points regarding to this phenomenon.  First, from several vocabulary of “batu”, most of them have the same phonetic form, that is [batu]. Second, the variation of “batu” vocabulary experienced changes in bilabial sound from /b/ to become /w/; extra aspirated voice [Bh] in phoneme [b]; and bilabial phoneme /b/ becomes dorsa velar /k/. Third, this study reveals that people’s interest in wearing and collecting gemstone all over Indonesia happened as the result of cultural similarity which lies in vocabulary “batu” that exists almost in all tribes, regions, and cities in Indonesia.Keywords: gemstone, local language, linguistic comparison

Abstract

This study focused on the analysis of the facts used to form the fabula which was defamiliarized into sjuzet in the novel Entrok by Okky Madasari. To analyze the facts, Russian Formalism theory and objective approach were used in this study. The results showed that the story in the novel used historical facts from the new order to form fabula. Subsequently the fabula was defamiliarized into sjuzet.The results also indicated that there was a fictionalization process conducted by the author in creating the story which used historical facts.Keywords: fabula, the new order, russian formalism

Abstract

The varieties of tarling music which keep changing and developing nowadays have brought two main concerns in our society: lack of identity function and music distortion. These issues may affect the loss of the originality of tarling music itself. This study aimed at knowing the development of tarling Cirebon and the change of tarling music at present day. The method used in this study was descriptive qualitative. The data regarding the art and tarling music were collected through library research and interview. Generally, tarling music is divided into two types: classical tarling music and modern Cirebon tarling music. Tarling music is the combination of different music genres like pop and dangdut. The collection of ideas of a certain community and that of the consolidated thoughts have become the sources of the tarling music development.Keywords: classical tarling, modern tarling, Cirebon

Abstract

This paper aims to evaluate the translation of cultural terms in English version of of the Hirata’s Laskar Pelangi. This paper investigates also the translation quality of those cultural terms. The data, in this study, are the terms of culture that exist in the novel. The finding of the cultural term is divided into five categories. It consists of ecology, material, social, organization, customs, ideas, motion and habits. Overall, translation cultural terms lead to reduce the level of acceptability and readability of the translation quality.Keywords: translation, cultural terms, laskar pelangi, rainbow troops

Abstract

In recent decades, the movement of Islamisation in Malaysia and Indonesia have significantly developed. Islam in both Malaysia and Indonesia is known by its moderate character, more syncretised and politically diverse. These characteristics may have led the mass popular culture that globally spread, significantly influenced the rapid movement of Islamic popular culture in both countries. This paper analysed the rise of Islam in Malaysian and Indonesian society and politics, with a focus on Islamic popular culture. It then compared the characteristics of Malaysian Islam and Indonesian Islam movement and examine the rise of nasyid as one of Islamic popular culture products in Southeast Asia. The trends indicated that the success of popular culture adaptation such as nasyid boy-band music in Malaysia and Indonesia vary in terms of the issues that they represent. It may influenced by the economic, political and cultural agenda which involve in it.Keywords: popular culture, islamisation, islamic music, nasyid
