Abstract

This study aims to investigate foreign language reading anxiety among Indonesian EFL Senior High School students. Thirty two students of grade eleven in a senior high school in Bandung were involved as the participants. This study employed a survey research design. The primary data source was collected by two types of questionnaires and the secondary data source was gained by interview. The findings revealed that most of the students perceived anxiety in medium level (71,9%). The study found that there were two major potential factors of foreign language reading anxiety namely text features and personal factors. Under the concept of text features, there are three sources of foreign language reading anxiety including unknown vocabulary, unfamiliar topic, and unfamiliar culture. Unknown vocabulary was considered as the most potential factor of reading anxiety under the aspect of text features (49%). On the other hand, under the concept of personal factors, there are two sources of foreign language reading anxiety including afraid of making errors, and worry about reading effects. Afraid of making error was nominated as the highest potential factor of reading anxiety under the aspect of personal factors (39%). Implication to the study and recommendations for further research were considered. Keywords: Foreign language reading anxiety, potential factors of foreign language reading anxiety

Abstract

Abstract

This paper is written under the purpose of exploring in details about one of popular language teaching methods namely Genre based Instruction (GBI). GBI as how it is today is very famous to be applied for teaching writing where the same case occurs in Indonesia in that GBI is implemented into the English classroom for teaching English writing. GBI is uniquely powerful in its substance since it not only focuses on the process of writing itself, but also stresses on the quality of writing work. This teaching method makes students learn a language as how it is used in a particular social setting because that is the obvious phenomenon that happens when people use a language. Therefore, this teaching method underlies its essence on teaching language meaningfully based on the social staging. In this paper, there are several elements which are discussed regarding GBI. They encompass its theories including linguistic principles and learning principles, both pedagogical and practical views in the classroom, and a brief practical view about GBI in Indonesia.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to describe the importance of peer review on students’ argumentative essay due to problems faced by students and teachers in producing students’ good argumentative essay. Students have problems in making use of the feedback given by teachers. Like students, teachers have problems in giving feedback due the large class and time constraint. The research hypothesis was tested by applying t-test. From the calculation of t-test, tobserved yielded 2.94. The total case degree of freedom was 55 ((27-1) + (30-1)). Ttable at the .05p level and 60 degree of freedom (the closest df) results in a figure of 2.00. This calculation reveals that t-observed could exceed the ttable. It means that the research hypothesis was statistically accepted, and null hypothesis was rejected. This means that the students treated by peer review had higher scores than those treated by teacher review on argumentative essay. Therefore, peer review gives better effect on students’ argumentative essay than the teacher review. Keywords: peer review, argumentative essay writing.
