Abstract

The use of onomatopoeia in each country often causes problems in the translation process due to differences in culture and background. The socio-cultural conditions of speakers of each language are different so that it also affects onomatopoeic translation. Moreover, translating onomatopoeia in novels becomes a challenge for translators to satisfy readers so that they can understand the content and storyline in the novel. This study aims to analyze the strategies used in onomatopoeic translation in the trilogy novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins which was translated into Indonesian by Desy Rachmaindah. In analyzing the data, the writer uses Baker's (2011) translation strategy. The results of this study indicate that onomatopoeic translation uses 6 translation strategies and some of them use other strategies that are not in accordance with the theory used in the translation novel The Hunger Games and translation strategies using paraphrasing related words dominate because translators tend to translate the source language with the same meaning as the target language.

Abstract

Personal pronouns are one of the characteristics that distinguishes each language from others. Personal pronouns are linguistic elements that refer to self-referential words. Personal pronouns in Japanese are classified into three types: first-person pronouns, second-person pronouns, and third-person pronouns. Personal pronouns are increasingly being studied not only in linguistics but also in applied linguistics, such as translation studies. Subtitles are used in audiovisual media translation. This research deals at how Japanese personal pronouns are translated into Indonesian subtitles of Yoshiko Nakamura's anime Tada Never Falls in Love. This study utilized two methods, namely data collection and data analysis. The translational equivalent method has been used in this study. Based on the findings, it is possible to conclude that personal pronouns in both the source and target languages have the same meaning components. There are, however, differences in the "gender" meaning component, with the source language preferring a specific gender and the target language preferring neutrality. Other findings from this study include the notion that subtitles in the target language have an informality tendency in the pronoun equivalent, resulting in the loss of gender-preferred speech of personal pronouns in the source language after translation. Furthermore, word-level equivalence can be gained although some meaning and nuance cannot be displayed in the target language.

From the findings, it found nine strategies applied in translating the subtitle of Enola Holmes movie. The domination as the most used strategies is condensation, transfer, and paraphrase, and deletion strategy. The domination strategies produce the final product of subtitles from SL to TL in line with the rules of AVT. Meanwhile, the rest of the least strategies used are expansion, imitation, resignation, decimation, and transcription strategy. The least translation strategies used do not involve much because the strategies contrast with the genre of the movie. Additionally, all of the translation strategies are helpful to produce the efficient subtitles and deliver the original message properly which also does not cross the line of the rules in AVT.

Abstract

This research aims to explain the correlation between Bahasa Indonesia’s vernacular variation and the social discrimination experienced by Eastern Indonesian. The researchers apply qualitative-quantitative method. The data were collected from the distributed online questionnaires which were filled by 41 respondents from Eastern Indonesia (East Nusa Tenggara, Sulawesi, Maluku, Papua). The findings show that there is a diglossic phenomenon between standard Bahasa Indonesia (High variety) and Bahasa Indonesia of Vernacular Eastern Indonesia (Low variety). The unique dialectal characteristics of Eastern Indonesian in Bahasa (phonological, lexical, and morphological) raised the issue of linguistic racism and linguistic privilege. Eastern Indonesian speakers of Bahasa are considered as minority speech community who suffered racism and discrimination. They experienced intimidation from people’s undermining impersonation, underestimation, and exclusion from the dominant speech community. They felt ashamed of their vernacular language identity and tend to imitate dominant accents, such as Javanese or Jakartan Indonesian. This is a serious issue that can increase social disparities and conflict among Indonesians. To solve the problem, the researchers suggest that Indonesian government must introduce Bahasa Indonesia’s variation (including morphological, lexical, and phonological variation from all Indonesian region) in the formal education as the best solution to give societies understanding of linguistic tolerance.

Abstract

Virtual communication gains popularity along with the rapid development of information technology. In a cultural context, cultural norms are employed in virtual communication. The lack of physical contact in virtual communication makes netizens utilize particular features in digital platforms to replace physical contact in performing politeness. This study explores the strategies of Javanese netizens to perform Javanese politeness maxims in virtual phatic communication. The data were taken from five WhatsApp Groups (WAG) of Javanese aged between 20s to 40s. 142 conversation texts containing phatic talks in WAG were collected by observation method. The conversational texts and virtual icons were transcribed for contextual analysis. The result shows that Javanese netizens utilized the maxims of Kurmat (Respect), Tepa Selira (Tolerance), Andhap Asor (Humility), and Empan Papan (Self-Awareness) as politeness strategies in virtual phatic communication. The tolerance maxim is the most frequently used to support each other. The maxim of humility is the least used. Javanese politeness maxims are camaraderie devices to establish social rapport in cyberpragmatics context. The employment of Javanese maxims is significant strategies to avoid conflict and the Face Threatening Act (FTA). Indeed, Javanese politeness maxims are essential in creating harmony in virtual communication.

Abstract

This study examines the MOOD analysis of interpersonal meaning in articles in online newspapers about the covid-19 vaccine in Indonesia. The purpose of this study is to explain the formula of MOOD analysis realized in grammar and to describe the speakers' mood in the application of the MOOD analysis in Indonesia's covid-19 vaccine article from online newspaper. The main focus of this research is on descriptive text articles and MOOD structure. This type of research is descriptive qualitative, the author uses observation documentation as a technique to obtain and measure data. The data were obtained by applying the theory of Gerot and Wignell (1994). The researcher found 259 clauses from six texts which became data taken from various online news sources. In the formula, there are various types such as Subject + Finite (Tense), Subject + Finite (Do), Subject + Finite (Modal), Subject + Finite (Have) and Subject + Finite (To be). The most commonly found category is the use of Finite (Tense). In the mood of the speaker, it is found that the speaker expresses certainty, possibility, uncertainty, obligation and advice. What most of the speakers said was certainty. In the analysis also found several categories of modalities, which after that can be included in the degree of modality, namely high, medium, and low. Because the limitations of this study are in a declarative, all clauses are statements that function to convey information from the author to the reader.

Abstract

Every language in the world has its own means to convey information that is poured through sentences. The structural patterns used also vary between languages as different thoughts of speakers of the language are also different. In the language localization industries, translation in the level of information structure from the source language into the target language must be done according to the rules that apply in the target language so that information can be conveyed precisely to the target language reader. This study aims to describe the thematic pattern in English declarative sentences found in Google's help content and their transformation in French and Indonesian using the Systemic Functional Linguistics analysis model approach developed by Halliday. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The findings obtained suggest that: 1) there are no structure shifts found in thematic structures from SL to TL 1 nor from SL to TL 2, 2) there are structure shifts found in thematic structures from SL to TL 1, but no change happened from SL to TL 2, and 3) there are no structure shifts found in thematic structures from SL to TL 1, but there are changes from SL to TL 2.
