Abstract

Urban identity could be considered as the result of interaction between social identity system and urbanism system. The term “Islamic City” is defined only by considering the physics of the city and reducing the concept of the city to physical elements. Current researches are carried out without considering the relationships between elements and parts of the Islamic city. The main objective in this research is to focus on the principles governing Islamic city which have their roots in Iranian identity and govern aspects of urban life, such as social, political, economic and physical space of the city. Studying concepts of centre, periphery and communications as the main elements of urban identity and matching each of the physical elements in aforementioned arenas could help with understanding the Islamic city structure and its organization and relations governing it. The significance of religious, social, and economic elements in the Islamic city matches the Contemporary urbanism identity in Iran and the concept of centre-periphery theory.

Abstract

This research pursued the objectives of assessing the awareness, perception, and levels of adherence of road users to traffic rules and regulations. The study was carried out in Minna and the major signalized roads were the target of the research. The research applied the survey research methodology, which involves carrying volumetric count of vehicles running the red lights on the signalized routes. The research, therefore, found out that, majority of the violators of the traffic signals were the motorcycle riders, closely followed by the tricycle operators; the commercial vehicle owners also form a major percentage of violators of the red light rules in the city. The research, therefore, recommended that strict measures aimed at ensuring immediate compliance with the traffic signals should be implemented, through fines and sanctions on violators to impoundment of offending vehicles. The research concluded that, if instant measures are not put in place to check the menace of the red light running, it will have a serious adverse effect on the social and economic strata of the city.

Abstract

In recent years, the global increase in security concerns made it inevitable to develop new action plans in planning processes. Security concerns come with the necessity of considering building architecture processes together with environmental and landscape design processes. This study aims identification of which measures can be taken into account safely built environment design. It was made a safety checklist which can be adapted for every open space. Five shopping malls around Istanbul were evaluated and some result has been achieved for their site security.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the causal relationships between urbanization and economic growth for the United State during the period 1960- 2017. We utilize the time series technique known as Toda-Yamamoto method, which efficiently works even with the variables co-integrated of arbitrary order. Empirical findings suggest a unidirectional Granger causality running from urbanization to economic growth, and no Granger causality detected from economic growth to urbanization for the long run. The findings prove that urbanization is nominated as a main driving force of economic growth.

Abstract

This article investigates on the concept of space, its production, use, and change processes, and uncovers the interrelations between social and spatial practices. Based on Lefebvre’s concept of the Right to the City, the article discussed two main spatial rights: the right to the oeuvre and the right to appropriation. To justify these spatial rights on the ground of legal rights, a comparison method is used in this article and three main legal documents is set against each other. These documents are the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the ‘World Charter for the Right to the City’ and the ‘European Declaration of Urban Rights’. As a result of this comparison, 22 universal norms are identified. These norms and the awareness regarding them and their ethical and legal background can empower social/spatial activism and be used for performing and evaluating spatial practices.

Abstract

This paper examines the cognitive use of prior knowledge in the design and evaluates the role of types and precedents in architectural design and education from a cognitive perspective. The previous research on design cognition shows that the amount of prior knowledge possessed by the designer plays a fundamental role in the production and quality of the creative outcome. This paper examines this correlation between the cognitive concept of cultural schemas with the architectural concept of types and investigates the cognitive role of types and precedents within architectural design and education in the light of the cognitive literature. With such an attempt, the research conducts an interdisciplinary theoretical inquiry that respectively studies the role of prior knowledge in design cognition, the concept of cognitive-cultural schemas, the concept of type and its relationship with cultural schemas, and the cognitive role of types and precedents in architectural design and education. In conclusion, this study proposes that types function identically as cultural schemas at the cognitive level and types and precedents have a generative value for architectural design, by virtue of the fact that they exist as the initial cognitive schemas that are employed at the beginning of the design process.

Abstract

This study assesses that there are similarities between the Bauhaus movement and computational design. The similarities are discussed under the titles of hands-on activities, interdisciplinary studies and relation with technology for both Bauhaus and computational design. Digital technology is changing rapidly, and to catch the developing technology up the education system must be updated. Bauhaus can be a pathfinder for computational design education. Within this context, three educational organizations, KTU CODE FAB, IAAC and ICD, which were experienced personally, are examined. As a result of the study, it is reduced that; the innovative spirit of Bauhaus, which focuses on doing and hands-on activities, is also important for computational design education. The well-trained architects that accustomed to the new technology can be graduated with the integration with industry, similarly to the Bauhaus system.

Abstract

The research is to develop architectural value in the educational studio environment through the superordinate program of architectural practice. The studio environment is proposed as an architectural project for the faculty in which the student architect may experience architectural value. Some architectural schools maintain an atmosphere of architectural value in continuity of a long history and other factors. This paper discusses the research for realizing architectural value in the context of the technological value proxy utilized in the profession and its associations around the world. The studio becomes simultaneous projects for faculty and students. The faculty project engages 2nd-year semester III studio at the Sushant School of Art and Architecture, integrating with students’ projects, as a means for this development. Although it is limited by faculty knowledge and student expectation, we can conclude characteristic effects whereby this approach will lead to directed evolution of the educational environment and influence professional practice.

Abstract

Design students should be able to design living environments and products according to diverse users’ needs, problems and expectations. The aim of this research is to explore the role of empathy as a design learning tool in interior architecture education. Moreover, the intention is to determine and analyze the reflections after the role-playing technique is experienced. This study is conducted with the graduate design students and three tasks were assigned to them. In the first task, the students took visually impaired people’s role and acted in real-life activities in a café. Then, they expressed their role-playing reflections and design reflections through semi-structured interviews. Lastly, Verbal Protocol Analysis is used in determining and categorizing the relevant affective and cognitive empathic expressions that were recorded. Color and light, orientation, safety and accessibility were mostly expressed as design issues in reflections. Furthermore, findings indicated that cognitive empathic expressions were widely used than affective expressions.

Abstract

This article investigates the relationship between the transformation of cities and the right to the city. To be able to do this, the problems that are created by contemporary urbanization such as social exclusion, poverty and environmental degradation are discussed in the first part. After that, with a special focus on the period starting with the industrial revolution up until today, the article explains economic and political motivations behind the urban transformation. This part emphasizes how urban change under different forms of capitalism creates and deepens social inequalities in cities. The final part of this article will be a discussion on the right to the city, and its relation to these urban issues.
