Abstract

Building envelope decisions made during early design stages strongly affect construction expenditure, operational energy demand, and occupant comfort, yet available evaluation tools often treat these criteria separately. This study addresses the lack of a simple cost-sensitive decision-support metric for prioritising envelope alternatives before detailed design. It develops a Cost-Comfort Optimisation Indicator (CCOI) and tests it through DesignBuilder v2025 parametric simulations for a two-storey 750 m² office shoebox model in New Delhi’s composite climate. A one-variable-at-a-time approach assessed four wall assemblies, five glazing types, and eleven window-to-wall ratios from 20% to 70%, using annual comfort hours, cooling energy, and envelope construction cost as inputs. Results show that the super-insulated wall assembly achieved the highest wall-category performance, with 7,677.5 comfort hours, 157,210 kWh cooling energy, INR 3,318,800 envelope cost, and CCOI of 0.864. Double grey argon glazing ranked highest among glazing options, reaching 7,688 comfort hours, 163,942 kWh, and CCOI of 0.856. Most WWR increases above the 30% baseline produced negative CCOI values, indicating inefficient cost-performance trade-offs. The framework supports cost-conscious envelope selection, improves infrastructure efficiency, reduces energy-related operating burdens, and strengthens urban economic resilience through better resource allocation in growing cities.

Abstract

Wetland landscapes are exposed to ecological degradation, flood vulnerability, and tourism pressure, yet planning approaches treat conservation, livelihoods, and visitor management as separate concerns. This study addresses this gap by examining how integrated landscape planning can strengthen socio-ecological resilience and sustainable tourism in Tanguar Haor, a Ramsar-designated wetland in northeastern Bangladesh. Using a qualitative mixed method design, the research combined seasonal field investigations after the 2023 flash flood, during the 2024 post-monsoon period, and in winter 2025, with questionnaire responses from 50 residents, interviews, tourism observations, and thematic analysis. The findings show that seasonal inundation, settlement edge erosion, declining native vegetation, unmanaged houseboat tourism, and limited sanitation infrastructure intensify livelihood vulnerability and habitat disturbance. 5,089 hectares, representing 44% of the area, remain under permanent water and support fisheries, biodiversity, and seasonal economic activity. The study proposes an elevation-based landscape framework integrating native vegetation restoration, reed belts, ecological zoning, community stewardship, and regulated tourism infrastructure. These strategies can improve erosion control, public service efficiency, employment opportunities, tourism revenue, resource allocation, and urban regional economic resilience while advancing context-sensitive wetland governance for landscape planning and urban management.

Abstract

Dense South Asian cities experienced severe food insecurity, income loss, and psychological strain during COVID-19, yet household-level evidence on rooftop gardening as crisis adaptation remains limited. This study investigates how the pandemic shaped rooftop gardening adoption and socio-economic resilience in Mohammadpur, Dhaka. A quantitative cross-sectional survey of 150 households compared 90 gardening adopters with 60 non-adopters, using descriptive statistics, t-tests, chi-square tests, and exploratory logistic regression. Findings show that 59.33% of households experienced pandemic-related income loss, while adopters reported higher peak stress than non-adopters but significantly lower current stress. Female respondents were 3.6 times more likely to adopt gardening, and households with full rooftop access were approximately 25 times more likely to garden than those without access. Food worry, gender, peak stress, and rooftop access emerged as key predictors, while 83.33% of respondents remained unaware of government or non-government urban agriculture initiatives. The findings demonstrate that rooftop gardening can reduce household food concerns, support mental wellbeing, strengthen women’s food-related agency, and improve resource efficiency in dense neighbourhoods. By linking community microagriculture with urban economic resilience, the study offers practical guidance for inclusive planning, urban food governance, and sustainable urban management.

Abstract

Rapid urban growth in sub-Saharan Africa is intensifying pressure on forest areas surrounding major cities. In Lusaka, with a metropolitan population of approximately 3.32 million growing at 4.5% annually, peri-urban miombo woodlands supply charcoal and farmland, yet these areas are hardest to monitor during the five-month rainy season when cloud cover exceeds 80% and optical satellite imagery fails. This study examines whether L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar can provide year-round woodland monitoring and whether such a workflow is financially practical for a resource-limited African city. A 17-year ALOS/PALSAR time series (2007–2024) for Lusaka National Park was analysed using QGIS and Python, combining multi-temporal statistics, a GEDI-calibrated Random Forest biomass model (R² = 0.76), and a disturbance indicator. The approach achieved 85.4% classification accuracy and a 31% cost reduction over conventional ground monitoring, demonstrating an operationally feasible, open-source SAR monitoring framework for African urban governance contexts.

Abstract

This study presents isometric log-ratio (ILR) balances derived from compositional data analysis (CoDA) as a novel framework for measuring the land-use mix, addressing the category insensitivity of the Shannon entropy index (SEI). Six ILR balances were constructed using a theory-driven Sequential Binary Partition of seven residential and commercial functional uses in station buffers within the Osaka Densely Inhabited Districts in Japan. The findings demonstrated that ILR balances successfully clustered three functionally distinct station-area typologies that align with urban outcomes. Comparative analysis of ILR balances and the Shannon entropy index revealed an inverted U-shaped ILR–SEI relationship, demonstrating that ILRs can distinguish compositionally distinct buffers with identical entropy scores. ILR balances further elucidated the sub-component-level interactions, which are masked by the single index of Shannon entropy. Overall, the findings suggest that ILR balances effectively complement the Shannon entropy index by providing category-sensitive directional measurement of functional mix and hierarchical sub-compositional decomposition, offering a more complete and planning-relevant characterization of functional land-use composition around transit stations.
