Abstract

Bahrain, a longstanding tourist destination in the Gulf region, has seen its economy benefit significantly from tourism. However, the improper development of tourism has led to negative impacts on urban tourism in historic areas, risking the loss of authenticity. This study aims to explore factors influencing the development of tourism strategies in Muharraq city, focusing on residents' perceptions. A qualitative approach was used, including a comprehensive literature review, interviews with residents to capture their views on tourism-related issues, and a self-administered questionnaire with key officials and stakeholders. The study identifies critical factors affecting tourism development and offers recommendations for enhancing cultural tourism in Muharraq. The findings provide valuable insights for policymakers to create sustainable strategies that balance economic growth with cultural preservation, ensuring that Muharraq remains a culturally vibrant city while promoting sustainable urban tourism. This research contributes to the broader field of urban tourism studies by highlighting the importance of local perceptions and participatory approaches in shaping effective tourism policies. By addressing key elements that influence tourism development, the study supports the creation of strategies that safeguard heritage while fostering sustainable growth in one of Bahrain's most culturally significant cities.

Abstract

This study explores the complex interplay between migration and the image of the city, with a focus on the Hadapsar-Magarpatta area of Pune, India. Using Kevin Lynch's theoretical framework of urban elements—districts, paths, nodes, landmarks, and edges—combined with Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis, the research investigates how migration reshapes urban form and identity. The study employs a decadal analysis of urban transformation, identifying key changes driven by migration patterns. Findings reveal that migration significantly influences the development of new urban nodes, alters paths, and affects the overall spatial structure, leading to evolving city identities. The influx of migrants is found to enhance the functional complexity of urban districts, impact the hierarchy of nodes, and reconfigure the prominence of paths within the city's spatial organization. This transformation contributes to socio-economic shifts, influencing local economies, labor markets, and resource distribution patterns. The study underscores the importance of integrating migration dynamics into sustainable urban planning, promoting the need for resilient infrastructure and inclusive policies to accommodate demographic changes. This research contributes to urban morphology literature by providing new insights into how migration drives urban transformation, reshaping the image and functionality of cities in a rapidly urbanizing world.

Abstract

Urban green spaces (UGSs) improve the environmental value of the city as well as the quality of life for citizens. Unfortunately, many cities in India are lagging behind the minimum standard of UGS required in the city. For example, Agra city in India, one of the most famous tourist destinations in the world, represents two distinct realities of UGS in the same city. One is the focus of tourism, and the rest is the place of common people with very limited public green spaces, leading to multiple social issues (like spatial polarization, etc.). The secondary data concludes that the PPGC of Agra is lower than the standards, and the ongoing schemes are approached through quantitative methods. Despite having many UGS development schemes, Agra's UGS shows stalled growth. This research examines the policies and programs of UGS development (AMRUT, SCM, etc.) and reviews them to understand the unique gaps and possible regulatory interventions. The study includes an assessment of stakeholders' readiness to accept plausible UGS strategies using an analytical analysis approach. The primary data shows that PPP is the requirement for the integrated development of UGSs. The planners can make policies highlighting citizen's rights and responsibilities to enhance UGSs in Agra.

Abstract

This study examines users’ socio-spatial behaviour in promoting sustainable retail district projects in Bahrain. It evaluates how customer behaviour and movement impact the social sustainability of contemporary open-space shopping districts. By employing qualitative methods such as questionnaires, on-site observations, and expert interviews, this study investigates factors influencing consumer preferences and attractions to shopping districts. Findings reveal that the vitality of shopping districts is closely linked to meeting users’ needs, which fosters social sustainability. The study identifies key elements for a framework that can integrate social sustainability measures into shopping district designs. This framework aims to support stakeholders and designers in planning sustainable commercial projects in Bahrain, ensuring long-term success and vitality. Research highlights the importance of considering socio-spatial interactions in retail environments to enhance livability and user experience. By understanding these dynamics, designers can create retail districts that not only attract consumers but also contribute to the well-being and sustainability of the community. Insights gained from this study can guide the development of future retail projects, emphasizing the significance of socio-spatial behaviour in achieving sustainable urban design and planning.

Abstract

In rapidly urbanizing regions like Delhi, India, mixed-use developments have emerged as vital urban forms, driven by the organic conversion of residential spaces into commercial hubs. This study investigates the dynamics influencing commercial performance in both planned and unplanned mixed-use neighborhoods in North-West Delhi. Employing multiple linear regression analysis on data collected from 213 commercial establishments, the research identifies key factors such as commercial area characteristics, road accessibility, and the proximity of storeowners to their businesses as significant drivers of commercial growth. However, the study reveals that local customer bases are insufficient for sustaining high commercial performance, emphasizing the need for broader catchment areas. The findings contribute to urban planning discourse by providing empirical insights into the economic sustainability of self-organized mixed-use neighbourhoods. The study highlights the complex interplay between commercial development, spatial accessibility, and urban form, offering guidance for future urban planning strategies aimed at enhancing neighbourhood-level commercial performance. These results underline the importance of considering mixed-use dynamics in urban planning to support sustainable commercial growth and community vitality in rapidly evolving urban landscapes.

Abstract

As urbanization continues to shape the world's landscape, concerns have intensified over environmental degradation and depletion of natural resources. Accordingly, international agendas emphasize managing urban sprawl for inclusive, resilient, and sustainable cities. On this basis, this study consists of exploring the nexus of urbanization and advanced technologies following a methodological approach based on a bibliometric analysis using the Dimensions Database to analyse research related to urban sprawl and LULC Changes from 1994 to the recent years; and a systematic review to synthesize existing literature on different methodologies integrating GeoAI technologies and LULC Analytics in the process of monitoring landscape, which optimizes Urban Planning and empowers predictive modelling to monitor environmental changes, therefore, promoting intelligent decision-making and inclusive growth via enabling the creation of targeted policies that address socio-economic disparities, environmental sustainability and infrastructure enhancement. By improving comprehension of scientific concepts, this article aims to fill the knowledge gap between urban studies and remote sensing using machine learning.

Abstract

Bangladesh has been experiencing rapid urbanization and economic growth, motivating people to move towards the cities. Consequently, commercial areas of the cities are becoming highly occupied.  The issue of overpopulation leads to congestion and shortage of open spaces, both reserved and publicly accessible, in such areas of the cities, affecting the physical and mental health of the users of these areas. To understand this situation, Chattogram in particular, the Chaktai commercial area is identified as the case study area for further investigation and research. This study will examine the present scenario of this densely built commercial area through an empirical analysis and field survey, focusing on collecting data related to major land-use types, street characteristics, major activities, traffic analysis, and environmental conditions. Additionally, an observational approach will be employed, along with one-to-one interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FGD), to gather user feedback on the space. By examining urban regeneration strategies for Asadganj, this study offers guidelines to improve conditions for its users including residents, business holders, and workers, to enhance the area's quality of life.

Abstract

The Economically Weaker Section (EWS) is constrained to live in slums and unauthorized colonies due to the lack of suitable housing options and affordability issues. Various factors such as building characteristics, financial constraints, and social considerations influence individuals' decisions regarding accommodation. A neighborhood in Delhi was chosen for a study to assess the importance of these factors for the EWS in rental housing. A total of 383 sample surveys were carried out to examine the socioeconomic variables and key factors influencing their choice of location, supplemented by 10 in-depth interviews to uncover hidden factors not typically found in existing literature. Principal Component Analysis was employed to identify the most crucial factors influencing accommodation choices. The study findings indicate that while the physical, locational, and economic aspects of rental housing are crucial, social factors also play a significant role. This research will offer invaluable insights to urban planners and policymakers to facilitate the provision of rental housing based on individual preferences in formulating housing policies.

Abstract

Urban redundancy, often observed in the core areas of cities, poses significant challenges to sustainable development and urban vitality. This study addresses urban redundancy by proposing a quantitative framework to both identify and mitigate its effects, using Ashram Road in Ahmedabad, India, as a case study. The research employs a Multi-Criteria Decision-Making Analysis (MCDMA) based on data collected through physical surveys and literature reviews. This analysis integrates approaches such as redevelopment, adaptive reuse, policy interventions, and economic strategies to counter redundancy effectively. The findings highlight that Ashram Road's core area, despite its historical and cultural significance, faces challenges like poor maintenance, high vacancy rates, and inadequate utilization of the available floor space index (FSI). The proposed framework aims to develop context-sensitive strategies that uphold the intrinsic value of core urban areas while promoting sustainable regeneration. The study demonstrates the need for a balanced approach that combines modern development with preservation, providing insights for urban policy-making that enhances the resilience and longevity of city cores.

Abstract

Mass Rapid Transport (MRT) has become pivotal in sustainable urban transportation, especially in densely populated cities like Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. Dhaka is implementing its first MRT system, which includes 17 stations, with three located in Mirpur. Mirpur, a significant area due to its diverse economic activity and population, is an important case study for understanding the effects of the MRT system. The study area spans 58.66 square kilometers and has a population of 632,664, representing a zone with unplanned mixed uses and a spontaneously developed favorable job-housing ratio conducive to transit-oriented development (TOD). Challenges such as last-mile connectivity and capacity limitations could impede the MRT's socio-economic potential. Moreover, the current land use and urban planning framework are not adequately prepared to support future TOD. This research highlights the necessity of proactive legislative changes and infrastructural improvements to optimize the success of Mirpur's MRT stations. Despite being in service for only a year and facing a lack of real-life data, this study focuses on Mirpur MRT stations to explore the socio-economic impacts of MRT systems, aiming to enhance knowledge in urban transportation and development.
