Abstract

This study aimed is to develop students’ soft skills through the implementation of the Culturally Responsive Transformative Teaching (CRTT) in chemistry learning. Indonesia's ethnic and cultural diversity is a challenge for teachers to design the chemistry lessons which is relevant with students’ characteristics. The research methodology applied is qualitative and applied on chemistry learning in the topics of acid and base, electrolyte and non electrolyte solution in five stages: self identification, cultural understanding, collaboration, critical reflections, and transformative construction. This research was conducted in two schools in DKI Jakarta and West Java in 2018. The data was collected by interview, reflective journal, and observations. The results showed that the chemistry learning through CRTT model can develop students' soft skills such as collaboration skills, critical thinking skills, nationality, social and cultural awareness, leadership, environmental caring, and curiosity. The teachers’ interview and reflections showed that the challenges in applying this approach were creativity in integrating cultural concepts in chemistry learning, students' understanding, time constraints, and the paradigm of students and teachers. Integration of ethnochemistry in CRTT can be developed in other chemical concepts with the principle of students’ character development

Abstract

This research is about the effect of mulch type and bokashi dose on the growth of chili. This study aims to determine: (1) the effect of mulch type on the growth of chili, (2) the effect of bokashi dose on the growth of chili, (3) the effect of the interaction of mulch type and bokashi dose on the growth of chili. This research used factorial design consisting of 2 factors. The first factor is the type of mulch which consists of 3 types of mulch namely black silver plastic mulch, rice straw mulch and dry leaf mulch. The second factor is the dose of bokashi which consists of 6 levels, namely: Po = without giving bokashi (control), P1 = giving 0.4 kg bokashi, P2 = giving 0.8 kg bokashi, P3 = giving 1.2 kg of bokashi, P4 = giving 1.6 kg of bokashi and P5 = giving 2.0 kg of bokashi. Growth parameters measured were stem height, leaf blade length, leaf blade width and wet weight of chili stems. Data analysis was performed by analysis of variance. The results showed that: (1) mulch type significantly affected stem height, stem wet weight, leaf blade length and leaf blade width, silver black plastic mulch gave better results than other mulches, (2) The dose of organic fertilizer significantly affected height stem, stem wet weight and leaf blade length but not significantly affect leaf blade width, (3) interaction of mulch type and bokashi dose did not significantly affect stem height, stem weight, stem length, leaf blade length and leaf blade width

Abstract

In this study, students’ scientific reasoning ability was set as the main indicator to measure the learning achievement via guided inquiry. The research was based on mixing two analitycal techniques using quantitative and qualitative data. The pre/post-test scores were used as the quantitative data to evaluate the students’ reasoning abilities. The comprehensive statistical analyses were done to evaluate (1) the difference level of the pre/post-test scores using paired t-test, (2) the increase level of the test score by calculating the N-gain, and (3) the effectivity of the learning model realization on the increased score through the d-effect size analysis. Indeed, those statistical analyses were executed after the pre/post-test scores were normally distributed and in accepted skewness interval. The experimental results, involving 24 junior high school students, showed that the calculated t value was 11.63 higher than that of the score in the t-table. Meanwhile, the N-gain value and the d-effect size 0.8 (upper medium level) and 3.56 (very high category), respectively. Thus, the guided inquiry model provided significant effect on the increase in students’ test scores in measuring their scientific reasoning abilities. In addition, the qualitative observation indicated that the learning model was well implemented

Abstract

Learning must be focus on creating conceptual change in students. One of the alternatives is using CCM-CCA-based learning devices because CCM-CCA is a learning model that can create cognitive conflict as a condition for conceptual change. This research is directed to develop learning devices based on CCM-CCA that can improve conceptual understanding. The learning devices developed to consist of LEU (Learning Events Units) and SW (Students’ Worksheet) for Newton's Law material about motion and work-energy. The results of the validation of learning devices (LEU and SW validation) indicate that these devices are valid in content and construction so that they are suitable for the learning process. Based on the results of the implementation of the device and the test results, it was concluded that the CCM-CCA-based learning device was able to improve conceptual understanding. The increase was obtained through an N-Gain analysis with an N-Gain value for LEU of 60.44% and SW of 54.01%. The percentage of the N-Gain score is included in the increase with the medium category.
