Abstract

ABSTRACT: This article contains responses toward opinions which say that humor by Abunawas prevailing in Indonesia is fictive and not from Arab. After analyzing texts of the eighth and twentieth century of Abunawas, it is clear that based on the aspects of fictional indications either formal or referential, ill-locution and per-locution, as well as imaginative and non imaginative, texts of Abunawas in the twentieth century is more fictive than the texts of the eighth century. In addition, this article shows that either texts of the eighth or twentieth century both contain humor and non humor. The texts that consist of joking indicate that the type of humor in the eighth century is less than the twentieth century. Based on the categorization mentioned above, this article also tries to say that humors prevailing in the eighth century texts of Abunawas are mostly classified into “superiority theories”; whilst the twentieth century texts are correspond to theories proposed by D.H. Monro (1988).KEY WORDS: Humor and non humor, Abunawas, imaginative and non imaginative, and eighth and twentieth century texts.  About the Author: Dr. Maman Lesmana is a Lecturer at the Arabic Studies Program, Department of Area Studies, Faculty of Humanities UI (University of Indonesia), UI Campus, Depok 16412, West Java, Indonesia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: This working paper is a preliminary study to reveal the involvement of the Sufis in the spread of Islam, and the development of Islamic civilization in the Malay world. The study also looks at the decline in the teaching of tasawwuf and the practice of the various established Sufi orders in the region and the rest of the Muslim world today. The conduct of this study is historical in its approach. It also looks at the imperative need for the teaching of tasawwuf to be revived as to ensure that the Islamic civilization in the Malay world with all its splendour be preserved in totality, and without its authenticity being diluted. It is here presented that the endeavour would not be a futile exercise because the science of tasawwuf and the practice of the various Sufi orders appear to have a deep historical root in the Malay world. The theme of this paper is a call for the restoration of primal Islam, the worship of Allah SWT based on correct aqidah, and within the parameter of the Shari‘a of Islam. And with this, the Muslims may acquire the needed spiritual strength as a defence against the continued onslaught of neo-colonialism and the uncertainties of globalisation.KEY WORDS: the Sufis, teaching of tasawwuf, Islamic civilization, globalisation, Malay world, and the restoration of primal Islam.About the Authors: Assoc. Abstract

ABSTRACT: “Nadranan” is a traditional ceremony celebrated every year by the society lived in Cirebon coastal area, West Java, Indonesia. The ceremony, taken usually two days three nights in the vicinity of the Sunan Gunung Jati cemetery region, is intended to show appreciation of the Cirebon society as many of them have jobs as farmer or sailor. In their development as culture phenomenon, the “nadranan” ceremony experienced many significant changes on its practice and its perception. The most significant and subtle modification are the removal of the “Larung Sajen” ritual. The removal is unusual since, in many places, “Larung Sajen” is the main core of the “Nadranan” ceremony. The modification indicates that “Nadranan” in Cirebon coastal society is closer as a culture practice, which is accepted as a traditional heritage rather than as a ritual practice which often invites controversy. Finally, “Nadranan” is essentially a traditional ritual usually conducted by the fishermen community, although in Cirebon it is also held by the agricultural community. KEY WORDS: “Nadranan”, ceremony, ritual culture, agricultural society, and fishermen community.About the Author: Dr. Titin Nurhayati Ma’mun is a Lecturer at the Arabic Literature & Language Departement, Faculty of Letters UNPAD (Padjadjaran University), Jalan Sumedang-Bandung Km.5, Jatinangor, Sumedang, West Java, Indonesia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: Acehnese tombstone is a unique terminology of a work of art involves the art design, calligraphy, and literature on a stone. The terminology was first appeared in the second decade of the 20th century. Preliminary assessment on the tombstone is still concentrated on the relationship between status of the death figure (sacred tomb) and the burial customs of the Malays/Muslims. After Indonesia independence (1945), some archeologists and historians began to analyze the Acehnese tombstone, including basic shapes, calligraphy, class, typology, and chronology of the use of Acehnese tombstones. Through a careful study of the Acehnese gravestones, it is to open the curtain on the process of Islamization in Indonesia or in Southeast Asia. Findings Acehnese tombstone dating 1007 AD in Lamreh village, Aceh Besar, two hundred years earlier than the tomb of Malik al-Saleh in Pasai, proving that the stone grave marker of Aceh has been used since the early 11th century AD and Islam has been present in Sumatera or Indonesia since the beginning of the 11th century AD.KEY WORDS: Acehnese tombstone, Lamreh village, typology, chronology, and process of Islamization in Indonesia.About the Author: Dr. Suprayitno is a Lecturer at the Department of History, Faculty of Letters USU (University of North Sumatera), Jalan Universitas No.19, USU Campus, Padang Bulan, Medan, North Sumatera, Indonesia. Abstract

ABSTRACT: A Bajau ancient sailing scripture owned by a famous Bajau sailor of Sabah called “Kitab Pelayaran Sampang Bulan (Sappit)” was discovered in Bum-Bum Island, Semporna, Sabah, Malaysia in 2009. The scripture is now kept by his great grandchild, Tuan Hj. Bakara Maharaja Onnong, who is living in Bum-Bum Island. The scripture shows that the Bajau community was definitely the famous sailor of its time in Sabah as well as in the “Dunia Melayu” (Malay World). They had knowledge, understanding and practising tradisional science, and Islamic Mathematics in their daily life. Based on previous studies, the content and the physical form of this scripture show that it is the only ancient sailing guide and also the oldest scripture ever found in the traditional maritime history of Sabah. The scripture and calendar show that Bajau sailors living in islands and coasts of Sabah, before and during the Sulu Sultanate’s era, have already possessed the significant knowledge and understanding on falaq that is outdated according to the Westerners.KEY WORDS: Ancient sailing scripture, Sampang Bulan, Bajau sailors, people science, Ismalic Mathematics, and traditional maritime history.About the Author: Assoc.
