Abstract

KATA KUNCI: Libat sama, kesusasteraan lisan, konvensional, pelajar, penggiat seni, pendedahan, perkembangan, objektif, program, dan peruntukkan.ABSTRACT: This paper entitled “Equal Engagement of the University and Community: The Benefits of Oral Literature in Malaysia”. It will discuss the importance of equal engagement or network between university and community in the context of higher education in Malaysia. The objective of this paper is to see how far this equal engagement is able to give the positive impact in the field of oral tradition in Malaysia. For this purpose, equal engagement is not meant just social programs that are conventional, such as mutual assistance, help to paint the hall, to motivate the village children, and so on, but it is more focused on development and cultural heritage of a community that be visited. Based on the opinion of Alan Dundes (1965) emphasized the importance of oral literature is reviewed in the context of the culture itself; and also the views of local oral literature scholar, Mohd Taib Osman (1982), who explains the closeness of oral literature in the field of research methodology, make the equal engagement is very relevant to be done. Students involved in this program will have the opportunity to reach out to the oral literature’s players, such as storytellers, experts of poem and poets, “gurindam” (rhapsodical type of free verse) couplets, and so on. At the same time, the legacy will continue to live together if the programs of equal engagement between university and community are held regularly and continuously. Significantly, this approach fits with the background of humanities and literature fields that are always talking about the question of the arts, conservation, creative process of an artist, and so on.KEY WORD: Equal engagement, oral literature, conventional, students, art activists, exposure, development, objectives, programs, and allocation. About the Author: Mohamad Luthfi Abdul Rahman ialah Pensyarah Kanan pada Bahagian Kesusasteraan, Pusat Pengajian Ilmu Kemanusiaan USM (Universiti Sains Malaysia), Kampus Induk USM, Minden, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia. Bagi urusan sebarang akademik, penulis boleh dihubungi dengan alamat emel: luthfi@usm.myHow to cite this article?
