Abstract

Birds are an animal that has an important role in the process of forest succession, plays a role in spreading seeds, helping pollination, and balancing ecosystems. Deforestation of forest areas in Riau has a high rate, this can be seen from the change in the function of forests into agricultural and plantation land. The Sultan Syarif Hasyim Forest Park (TAHURA) is a conservation area that has quite alarming conditions, of the forest area of 6,172 hectares, there are only 2,000 hectares left forested, while the rest have acacia forest cover, shrubs, oil palm plantations, rubber plantations . The assessment of bird diversity needs to be carried out in the Sultan Syarif Hasyim Tahura given the high level of habitat destruction. Birds in TAHURA Sultan Syarif Hasyim have 71 species of birds from 34 families and 13 orders, there are 5 nocturnal birds. The diversity index (H) ranges from 3.19 - 3.92, the evenness index type (E) ranges from 0.88 - 0.92 and the species richness index (R) ranges from 2.14 - 4.28.

Abstract

Kelor is a plant species that has many benefits because of its nutritional content. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared Moringa as a miracle plant, because it has saved many lives, especially children in many poor countries. Kelor has the opportunity to be developed in Sumatra, especially Riau as an alternative food crop, source of some important nutrients such as vitamins, proteins and anti-oxidants. Kelor from East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) is known to have the best quality in Indonesia. Its development in Riau requires preliminary research related to the growth of seedlings in several growing medium that have characteristics similar to those in Riau. This study uses a completely randomized design with treatment of growing medium in the form of three treatments, namely black soil, podsolic soil and peat soil mixture. The analysis was carried out descriptively and inference to the parameters of the percentage of life and height of Moringa seedlings. The results showed that seedling growing medium from top soil + fuel husk were best for Moringa seedling growth. Seedling growing media from top soil sub soil or from top soil alone can be the best alternative afterwards.

Abstract

Deforestation in Kalimantan island made 17 million hectares of primary forest loss in the last 40 years. The forest restoration project needs native species seedlings from the previous tree on the damaged forest. The aim of this study to determine the germination and growth of the types of Shorea obtained from TNGP. This study used 38,728 seeds from four species of the Shorea genus: red meranti (Shorea leprosula), Tengkawang (Shorea macrophylla), white meranti (Shorea agami), and belabak (Shorea quadrinervis) obtained from forests near reforestation sites. The result show the average germination rate is 80%. The highest germination rate from the Shorea quadrinervis was 98.7%. We found that the growth of the Shorea genus from seeds was ready for planting in a period of 4 - 5 months.
