Abstract

One attempt to control the negative effects of television (TV) is to educate parents about the TV media and programs. TV media literacy for parents is needed, so that they as chaperone for their children have the ability to filter messages from TV programs, translate and interpret in accordance with the moral values. This study were aimed to survey media literacy of parents and develop media literacy learning for parents. The populations in this study were the parents of elementary school students of grades 4, 5, and 6 in the South Tangerang for the two districts, namely District of Ciputat and District Setu. Samples were taken purposively of 283 respondents. Data were collected through questionnaires and interviews of 20 respondents in the activities of Focus Group Discussion. The process consisted of three stages, namely the survey, model development, and testing models. All three phases of activity showed the following results. Most of the respondents were knowledgeable about the TV program, and the values contained in the message of the TV program watched by their children. However, some respondents were misunderstood and unsure about the moral values contained in the TV program, so that their attitudes toward the TV programs watched by their children were loose. The second phase was built a learning model in multimedia package with a video format, which presented snippets of TV programs, and guidances from communication experts and child psychologists. This model is presented to respondents in the first focus group discussion. The next phase, the second focus group discussion was conducted to see changes in knowledge and attitudes of parents after receiving the learning model. The results showed that there were changes in knowledge and attitudes of parents about the TV programs watched by their children.

Abstract

Multiple choice tests have been used to measure students learning achievement for most of the courses at Universitas Terbuka (UT). To ensure the quality of the tests, test item analysis based on classical test theory has been employed regularly. This paper aims to analyze multiple-choice items of the End Semester Examination of UT using the program ITEMAN. The data used were the answers sheets of students taking eight courses in the first and second semester of 2009. Courses analyzed in this study were MKDU4111, PEMA4210, MKDU4109, ISIP4215, EKMA4214, ESPA4112, BIOL4110, and BIOL4119. The results showed that the test items used have had a pretty good quality. Average test item difficulties were fair. This was indicated by the mean value of P which ranged from 0.328 to 0.461. Discrimination index for both semester tests were good in about 75% of the courses measured. Its value ranges from 0.304 to 0.451 for the first semester of 2009 tests and 0.343 to 0.382 for the second semester of 2009 tests. Meanwhile, the reliability of the test items could be considered good except for the courses PEMA4210 (first semester 2009) and MKDU4111 (second semester 2009).

Abstract

Learning subject such as Natural Sciences (IPA) is not only learns about science concepts but also experiencing the real nature. This study aims to obtain information about students' perceptions on the content of science laboratory practices, the preparation of students in tutorials, as well as expectations for practical implementation of IPA. Questionnaires were administered by mail and direct delivery. A total of 399 students from Medan, Jakarta, Jakarta, Samarinda, Surabaya, Bangka Belitung, Mataram, Palu, which registered to the course at Universitas Terbuka (UT) in the first semester of 2009 had answered. Observation was carried out at 4 locations in Sukabumi, Depok, Tangerang, and Cibarusa. The results indicated that independent laboratory practices were done more compared to the formal tutorial practices. Perceptions of students towards science laboratory activities of the of 4 scale (poor (1), fair (2), average (3) and good (4)), were respectively X = 3.34 for student involvement in laboratory practices, X = 3.01 for the content material, X = 3.27 for the presence of tutors, and X = 2.61 for the availability of facilities and infrastructure. While the gap between the conditions and expectations of students in consecutive tutorial activities was 0.71 for the availability of facilities and infrastructure, 0.41 for to the availability of laboratory practice materials, 0.31 for the competence of tutors, and 0.33 for student involvement in laboratory practice activities.

Abstract

This research was aimed to access the quality of non printed learning materials especially video as a supplement for learning modules offered by undergraduate study program of early childhood education (PGPAUD). Data were collected by using questionnaire with 86 closed-ended questions and one open-ended question. Students in their third, forth, and fifth semester from Jakarta, Serang, and Bandung were taken as samples. Among 90 questionnaires distributed, about 69 (76.67%) were returned. Descriptive analysis was employed in this research. It was concluded that the technical quality of the Video Program including sounds, colors, packaging, duration, captions, utilization, and documentation, were good. The quality of instruction in that video was good as well. In addition, the Video Program has high quality content. The respondents also agreed that the Video Program was useful for them as kindergarten teachers. However it was stated that the Video Program was only a little helps in doing their course examination. Meanwhile, the average students score for this subject is B and C.

Abstract

Learning achievement of Mathematics among Universitas Terbuka (UT) students generally are less satisfactory. A mathematics tutorial model by using lesson study (TMLS) was developed and evaluated. Criteria of usefulness of the lesson study is measured based on the validity, practicality and effectiveness in improving the quality of the tutorial. The study was conducted in Surabaya. The respondents consist of Mathematics learning experts, Mathematics lecturer, tutors and UTs elementary school education students. The results showed that TMLS model and its learning instruments meet the criteria of validity, practicality and effectiveness. It can be seen from the results of the implementation TMLS model that showed some advantages, such as (a) good response of the students toward TMLS model, (b) the TMLS model was suitable with the tutorial basic principle that is students independence, (c) the TMLS model increased students mastery and thinking level at the mathematic modules, (d) the TMLS model had motivated students to be active in finding the deeper understanding of the subjects, (e) the TMLS model had motivated students to improve their meta cognitive knowledge, (f) The tutors role in the implementation of the TMLS model was suitable with the main function of tutor, and (g) the learning syntax of the TMLS model had motivated the students to be active in learning and developing their mathematics communication.

Abstract

This article was written based on research that aims to determine: 1) Effect of the use of a tutorial model I Tutor Accreditation Program (PAT-UT I) and Student Team Achievement Division (STAD) on the course of elementary school science teaching and learning; 2) Effect of learning motivation; and 3) the interaction of two tutorial models (UTs Tutor Accreditation Program 1/PAT-UT I and Student Team Achievement Division /STAD) with the learning motivation and learning achievement. This study used experimental method of two-way factorial design (ANAVA 2 x 3). This study involved two groups, which were PAT-UT I group and STAD group. Data was collected by means of questionnaires and multiple choice learning achievement tests. The results showed (with significance level (?) 5%): 1) tutorial model has a significant effect on learning achievement attained by students; 2) learning motivation influenced learning achievement significantly; 3) there were no interaction between the tutorial model, learning motivation, and learning achievement. It was concluded that learning achievements of students with STAD tutorial model were better compared to PAT-UT I tutorial model. Higher learning motivations were resulted in higher learning achievements and learning outcomes.
