Journal of Architectural Research and Design Studies (JARS) is a discursive venue for research groups, lectures and tutors and students emphasizing architectural education in Indonesian context. It connects education realm with building industries and architectural practices. This journal is internationally peer reviewed / refereed. JARS contains variety of architectural topics on architectural history and theory and criticism, structure and building science as well as design practices. The Journal encourages discursive architecture on marginalized community, gender, race or ethnicity, as well as multicultural and participatory approach.

Abstract

Limited space in densely populated area in cities becomes threat for safety and comfortableness for children need for outdoor playground. Kampung Badran in Yogyakarta has been declared as one of the children friendly kampungs. Thus, it is necessary to examine the parameters and indicators of safety and comfortableness to move based on the standard. This paper aims to study the level of safety and comfortableness in the playing space of children in the kampung as the manifestation of children friendly kampung. The data was collected by observing and taking photographs and analyzed with descriptive analytical method. The findings show that the conditions of facilities in the form of space are relatively adequate and safe. However, the condition of playing equipment and facilities are not safe and lacking of treatment. The children who are playing are prone to potential accidents such as sinking in, jammed in, and slippery. The participation of stakeholders in maintaining and developing the Kampung is highly needed because the kampung has potential assets to be example and role model for other kampung to achieve Children Friendly Kampong.Key Words: children safety, movement comfortableness, children friendly Kampung

Abstract

Kutai Kartanegara in the past was part of The Kingdom of Kutai, the oldest kingdom in Indonesia from the 4th to to 13th century. However, the data about this kingdom is very limited including the information about the architecture at that era. The interest to identify the character of Kutai Kartanegara such as the architecture has grown from the government and the society as the media to express the local identity. Thus, this research aims to identify the traditional architectural features of Kutai Kartanegara based on comparative analysis with the house of Lamin Dayak Kenyah and Architecture of Melayu Perak Malaysia. The method used in this research is comparison between traditional architecture of Dayak ethnicity and Malay traditional architecture through literature review. The result of library studies is then compared with the empirical data about traditional architecture of Kutai Kartanegara from field observation and measured drawing to one of the selected cases of traditional house of Kutai. From the findings of this research, it can be concluded that besides there is similarity with the two comparing architectures, the traditional architecture of Kutai has the specialty from the morphological aspect of layout and orientation. In addition, it also functions as single family dwelling with simpler geometrical ornamentation.Key Word: traditional architecture, identity, Kutai Kartanegara.

Abstract

This research aims to measure and evaluate the level of illuminance quality in architecture studio room in relation to the achievement of standard performance and minimum visual comfortableness that should be fulfilled. This study also explores the effect of both illumination quality and quantity to the students physical and psychological performance in conducting visual activities in the architecture studio room. This evaluation will also evaluate the deviation between perception of brightness of users and data measurement by using device related to the achievement of illumination standard of the room. This research is conducted with mix method of quantitative and perceptional with correlational method. The study used empirical data and information from students as the object of research through questionnaire survey and actual data by measurement using luxmeter device to measure the quantity of luminance in the studio room. The data collected indicates that the performance of visual activities that should be achieved require a quite high illuminance quality considering the long duration and continuous activities. This research also explores the importance of determination of visual standard based on the variation of activities compared with the determination of space definition to ensure that all visual activities can be done with optimum performance. The findings indicated that perception of brightness and the adequateness of lighting level in determining visual requirements are two different things in which the adequateness of illuminance level is numerical standard that is determined based on visual observation. The determination of illumination adequacy which is made based on individual perception of brightness may lead to various visual performance standard that may potentially cause illuminance deficiency and as a result may cause various symptoms of eyes fatigues that lead to the decrease of visual performance. Keywords: luminance quality, perception of brightness, continuous visual performance, Architecture studio room

Abstract

The objective of this study is to identify water conservation technology and domestic wastewater management in relation to building design. Water sanitation and conservation aspects were examined based on three parameters such as table checklist of Water as an Ecological Factor for a Sustainable Campus Landscape Journal of Procedia Social and Behavioral Science, method of DCBA Sustainable Housing in Indonesia and Greenship from Green Building Council Indonesia. Every parameter has benchmark that every building should attempt to fulfil as much as possible. This research used literature study, field survey, and interview with some relevant resource person to get relevant data based on related theories. The findings of the research found the values that indicate how far the implementation of water conservation technology and waste management in both research objects. Qualitative analysis is used to complete the three parameters of analysis and the quantity of water saving is also considered. Keywords: building, water contamination, water conservation, waste water management, building design.

Abstract

Recently, the phenomenon of climate change effect has been clearly seen. Green city as concept of development have been initiated in several countries in the world with the expectation to contribute to the mitigation of global warming impact. Green City is the city that prioritizes the balance of bio-ecosystem with the environment to create comfortableness for the city residents and visitors (Yunus, 2012). Attributes of green city is related with the concept of sustainable architecture as the effort to minimize the negative impact towards the environment to address environmental problems caused by architectural complications. This paper focuses on the implementation of sustainable architecture in supporting the effort to achieve green city. This research conducted exploration in the aspect of planning and implementation that accommodate the concept of green city in architectural aspect based on the city planning in Surakarta City. This research is conducted in several locations in Surakarta City such as Kampung Iklim Sekip Kadipiro, Selasar Budaya Kampung Jagalan, and Mojosongo. The three locations develop the planning and implementation of design with the principles of low cost, simple technology and low impact to the environment. Those efforts support the program to realize green city through sustainable architecture implemented in the building and simple supporting element of environment with low cost.  Keywords: green city, sustainable architecture, eco-friendly, climate change
