Abstract

The purpose of this study is to figure out English teachers’ perception on the 2013 curriculum at SMA Negeri 1 Manokwari by looking at their understanding on the concept of the 2013 curriculum, scientific approach, and their views on the assessment of students’ progress. The data was collected through interview and then was analyzed by using “grounded data analysis” method. This qualitative data analysis was chosen in attempting to categorize data thematically and free of any biases. The finding reveals that mostly English teachers agree that the 2013 curriculum is designed to improve students’ competence and it facilitates students to learn actively. Moreover, scientific approaches are defined into three different perspectives. Those are teachers as mediator, learning model, and practical engagement. They also recognize that assessing students’ progress demands them to measure students into three different competences. Theoretically, most of English teachers have understood the notion of the 2013 curriculum. However, several constrains emerge in the implementation of the curriculum. Some common problems are students have various abilities and the lack of supporting learning. Moreover, such concept of the assessment of students’ progress is also still hard to put into practice. For some reasons, there have been some unresolved problems that influence teachers’ performance significantly such as too much aspects of attitude, large size class, and limited number of time spent to learn English in class.

Abstract

Reading skills is not the word for word, but reading skills have a goal to get the meaning of the passage. Therefore, the reading speed is determined also by the ability to grasp the meaning of a word row.This study aimed at improving the language skills of students in secondary education with the title: “Improvement of Fast Reading Through Exercise Methods in Class VII B SMP Negeri 15 Manokwari”. Subjects in this study of teachers and students of class VII B SMP Negeri 15 Manokwari. The object of this research is the application of the method of speed readingexercises to improve reading skills. Actions are conducted in two cycles with steps such as planning, action, observation, observation and reflection, then the data collection is done by: (1) descriptive qualitative method of data collection in three ways, namely (a) read and write tests, (b) observation sheets, and (c) teacher observation sheet. The results showed that the classroom action research (PTK) conducted on students of Class VII B SMP Negeri 15 Manokwari, get a picture as follows. First, the use of speed reading training methods (sciming) can improve students’ reading ability. Secondly, referring to the results of observation and reflection can actually give a positive answer that the learning outcome by the number of 24 students (16 male students, female 8 students). Thirdly, it is known that increased activity of students inthe first cycle is only about 29% is represented by one person learners who scored 90 and 6 students who scored 80 there are 6 students. Fourth, cycle II can be seen that the acquisition value of the students is in line with expectations of researchers.

Abstract

The study entitled “a study on students’ attitude in learning English as a foreign language in two classes at Sekolah Menengah PertamaNegeri 01, Manokwari” presents the attitude of highest ability of class (8A) and lowest ability of class (8H). This research is partof a case study Attitude of this study is considered as one of important role in deciding positive and negative toward particularlearning, in this term is EFL. It is also divided into three components which are called affective, behavior and cognitive. Aswe know that students in junior high school are special group of age that create rapid transition of changes, their attitudescan be vary, especially the foreign language they learn. The method that is used in this study is the cross sectional methodwhich is part of survey research design according to Creswell (2012).The results of this study show that students in class 8A mostly tend to have Normal category based on the questionnaires.Meanwhile for the class 8H, the results show that positive attitudes are mostly found based on the questionnaires. However,for the results of behavior observation, changes happen in context of the learning activity within English classroom. The class8A has more positive behavior toward English subject rather than class 8h. The class 8H did not present whether positiveor negative behavior, only for undecided/normal behavior rose within English learning process.

Abstract

This study describes how the using of portfolio raise students’ awareness in developing autonomy on the second semester students of English Education based on their attempt to develop their reading comprehension in order to increase their English vocabulary and their interest in searching information though English articles.The participants learnt though the porfolio process that adapted from Yildrim (2013). The documentation of 30 students’ goal, articles, summarizes, evaluation and reflection on their portfolio was analyzed descriptively. The result shows that the using of portfolio in teaching reading comprehension for students who have low motivation and interest and are lack of English vocabulary is effective to help students gradually accept their roles in learning English and raise students’ awareness of their responsibility in learning process.

Abstract

WullaPoddu (holy moon) is one of Merapu religious ritual presented by Wewewa etnics in Sumba island. During this holy moon all of Merapu religion prohibited to do some activities which can create instability toward human nature and the cosmos. This ritual performance based on traditional enumeration which dissimilar to month in messiah calendar but they appoint based on natural phenomena. In performing this ritual there are some materials which sacred by them and its have philosophical meaning. Some rules are determine by Rato (the ritual chief) must be obey by all the members of Merapu religious community. Knowledge system of the community is ethnoscientific religiously fashioned and united in all aspect of Wewewa community livelihood. Morals and noble values still relevant to develop in supporting social livelihood nowadays. Construing theory presented by Turner (1967) and ecolinguistic perspective presented by Haugen (1972) are used to interpreted the meaning and function of Wulla Poddu ritual. The philosophical meaning will become the noble values (as local genius) which is can be an inheritance for young generation of Wewewa ethnic specially and also as cultural property for Indonesian people.

Abstract

This study is based on the important of speaking skill. Speaking is important to be learnt because speaking is the way to communicate with other people in order to deliver opinion and express idea, but in fact the students’ ability in speaking English is very low. There are some elements of speaking such as vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, fluency and comprehension that must be mastered by students in order to be a good English speaker. In this research, the researcher used debate technique to improve students’ speaking skill. The main objective of this study is to describe the use of debate technique in improving speaking skill and to identify the students’ speaking skill improvement after being taught by using debate technique. This study is classroom action research that was done in two cycles. The data collection was done by using observation, test and questionnaire. The data from the observation that had been taken from every cycle analyzed descriptively and the data from test was analyzed in the form of numbers and descriptively, while the data from questionnaire also analyzed descriptively. The participant of this study was 36 students in class XI UPW 1. The result of this study shows that using debate technique can improve students’ speaking skill. This is proven by students’ test score that improved in every cycle. In the first cycle, the students’ average score was 2,1 and in the second cycle students got 3,3. Debate is an appropriate technique used to improve students’ speaking skill. The result of this study is hopefully can be used as an information for English teachers in teaching speaking.

Abstract

This article aims to describe the use of language which is implemented through a legal document called a Special Autonomy Law on Papua in 2001 had a relative sense of status, socio-political situation and the condition of Papua in order to strengthen the frame of the Republic of Indonesia. This article is based on three assumptions that can be reviewed in further description of (1) the use of language in the political sphere Papua, (2) the relation distinctiveness political language in the statute of special autonomy to Papua, and (3) the ideology of political language has a relationship with the political situation Papua. Along with the construction of language as a tool used by humans to coordinate their actions in the context of social relationships. Then there is the use of a word in the language. If the language is seen as a tool, means the language is the act or acts and also instructions to do or perform the action.

Abstract

This paper aims to reveal the application of learning methods Role Playing is a method that seeks to provide mastery of learning materials through the development of imagination and appreciation. Implementation of Role Playing learning method is aimed to train the students of grade XI IPA 2 SMA YPPK Taruna Dharma so that the students are skilled to speak and dare to express by paying attention to mimic, gestures and intonation in the context of drama play. Speaking aims to express ideas and opinions, criticisms, feelings in various forms to the speaking partner according to the purpose and context of the conversation. In addition, through the activities of speaking and communicating students can gain new experiences and can appreciate the literature in various types and forms through the activities of oral literary results This paper explores the use of learning methods Role Playing which aims to provide mastery of learning materials through the development of imagination and appreciation.

Abstract

Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk menggambarkan tentang program penguatan pengajaran baca tulis kelas awal yang mencakup: (1) empat aspek dalam pembelajaran kelas awal, yaitu Dengar, Ucap, Baca, dan Tulis (DUBT), dan (2) enam komponen literasi, yaitu kesadaran cetak, fonologi, pengetahuan alfabet, fonik, dan pemahaman di SD Negeri Warawaf Distrik Warsa Kabupaten Biak Numfor Tahun Ajaran 2015/2016.  Sasaran program penguatan ini meliputi: kepala sekolah, guru kelas awal, kepala desa, ketua komite, Majelis Jemaat, dan Orang Tua Murid dengan waktu pelaksanaan observasi yang dimulai pada tanggal 05 – 06 September 2015, dan kegiatan pelatihan dimulai 07-17 September 2015. Fakta menggambarkan bahwa rendahnya minat siswa dalam kegiatan membaca dan menulis (literasi), minimnya buku non pelajaran, lemahnya apresiasi terhadap siswa dalam kegiatan membaca dan menulis menambah daftar panjang angka melek huruf. Untuk itu, program penguatan pengajaran baca tulis diharapkan juga mampu menekan jumlah angka melek huruf (AMH) yang menjadi salah satu indikator keberhasilan kualitas pendidikan baik di wilayah perkotaan maupun wilayah terpencil atau terisolir.
