Abstract

Awareness of national and cultural identity has nowadays become an increasingly popular topic of conversation. As the oldest culture in Indonesia, it is not surprising that Malay cultural values have embodied all aspects of Indonesian nationhood. Such values have been inveterately introduced to the people since their early age. Different media can be utilized to make this effort, one of which is children's readings. Despite the importance of introducing Malay culture to Indonesian society, however, not many children’s reading seemingly contains the virtues of Malay culture. As the result, children seem to have lack of knowledge and awareness of their culture of origin. While preliminary studies show that Malay cultural values can be found in Indonesian folklores, many Indonesian children are ironically not familiar with such folklores and instead more familiar with Malaysia-made animated shows such as Upin & Ipin and Pada Zaman Dahulu. With the strong influence of Malay culture in these two shows, it is understandable that Indonesian children learn more about Malay cultures from the shows. This paper aims to describe how Indonesian children recognize and learn about Malay culture from their readings, namely Upin & Ipin and Pada Zaman Dahulu. By observing this process, it is possible to identify any possible challenges to the cultural revitalization attempt, particularly of Malay culture, in Indonesian children's readings. This paper employs a descriptive and qualitative approach, using two Malaysia-made animations namely Upin & Ipin and Pada Zaman Dahulu as its object of research.

Abstract

The tension between the Islamist group and the state has risen in Indonesia this 2017. In the mid of 2017, Joko Widodo (Jokowi) government has announced to disbandHizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) as one of the Islamist groups in Indonesia. It  happened in the midst of protest toward Jokowi for his ignorance to respond the alleged religious defamation by Ahok, governor of Jakarta. This article explores the discourse used by Jokowi government and its allies to ban HTI in Indonesia. It also explains the reason for the policy produced and political interests behind it. This paper argues that the dissolution of HTI is by no means for legal and security reason but for political interest of Joko Widodo and his political allies.

Abstract

This paper discussesthe sea voyages and trades in relation to the history of Malayan occupancies at West Coast of South Sulawesi in fifteenth century when Bugis and Makassar kingdoms started to emerge. This research used philological approach with manuscripts (lontara) as primary data sources. The results of this research suggests that the establishment of local ports such as Suppa’, Siang, Tanete, Kalukubodoa, and Sanrabone along the west coast of South Sulawesi since the fifteenth century indicates the initial periods of kingdoms’ maritime activities in South Sulawesi. In sixteenth century, these sailing and trading activities continued to show their progress which was marked by the establishment of networks and relationships between Bugis and Makassar kingdoms with other areas at Nusantara such as Malacca, Pahang, Minangkabau, Patani, and Champa. It was proved, then, that these sailing and trading activities have become a crucial factor which led to the establishment of cooperation and social integration between Bugis-Makassar peoples and Malayan peoples who came from Malay Peninsula and Sumatera. Malayan traders already sailed to Sulawesi since the fifteenth century and they were well accepted by Bugis and Makassar local peoples. These Malayan traders from social relation aspectwere accepted as residents, and even allowed to married with Bugis and Makassar peoples. In the long run this kind of intermarriage would integrate those Malayan into Bugis and Makassar.

Abstract

The Sulalatus Salatin is clearly a form of historical literature that contained a lot of stories, myth, especially during the period pre-Melaka until the existence of Melaka itself. The objective of this study is to identify the mythological aspect and its kinship with the king’s authority. The research will use cultural theories. Mythology has always been connected with the tales of gods which always have a kinship with the constituents of faith. This element usually associated with the beginning of a race or ancestral root of an individual, especially royalties which were invariably tied to the extraordinary & peculiar tales. In the essence, mythology is the tale of the origins which encompasses the roots of blood line, the name of a place, the arrival of Islam, etc. In the context of societal belief, mythology is not just something respectable, but the mythical event was thought to actually took place and studied as something sacred. This clearly proves that myth has already existed even before the emergence of Tun Seri Lanang as the author of Sulalatus Salatin. Therefore, this research is produced with the aim to observe the mythological elements in the text of Sulalatus Salatin and the role of its story as a moral duty in fulfilling the King’s wishes.

Contemplating the recent social reality, it seems that the willingness to build peace needs more serious consistency. The emergence of horizontal conflicts that bring out SARA issue managed to threaten peace. Interestingly, this phenomenon often appears ahead of the political contestation. Therefore, to guarantee a healthy democratic system and support national integration. Therefore, through the values of local wisdom is expected to reduce the problems above. This paper aims to explain the cause of the fertile of negative issues and to examine more deeply related to the values of local wisdom. The method of writing used is literature analysis. The results of the analysis found that behind the proliferation of the SARA issue that triggers social conflict is a phenomenon built by political entrepreneurs to support personal interests. This is marked by the time when the issue arose when the political year was approaching. Thus, social conflict is not a natural product of communal society, but a product of deliberate political strategy. It is concluded that reconstructing the value of local wisdom becomes the most concrete solution in overcoming the problems related to national unity and coalescence.

Abstract

Introduction: Climate change are any change of climate that is attributed directly or indirectly to human activity that alters the composition of the global atmosphere and that is in addition to natural climate variability observed over comparable periods. Climate change has become a global environmental issue which dominates the international agenda and one of the most challenging issues for mankind.Research methodology: This paper involved with secondary data which are collected from journal, proceedings, books and internet sources regarding the topic. Result and discussion: Malaysia could be considered as a free zone from climate related disaster. However, mild climate related disasters are quite frequent to happen lately. The potential impacts of climate change in the Malaysian context would include sea level rise, reduced crop yields, greater diseases among forest species and biodiversity loss, erosion of shorelines, increased flood intensities, coral reef bleaching, increased incidences of disease, tidal inundation of coastal areas, decreased water availability, loss of biodiversity, and more droughts. To tackle the scenarios, Malaysia adopts ‘precautionary principles’ to mitigate and adapt to climate change. However, the important and immediate action needed in mitigating the climate change effects is the actively participating and involving the public in this issue. Conclusion: Malaysia has made significant progress in setting up legal framework for the implementation of climate change mitigation and voluntary environmental disclosure. Improving education, training and public awareness on climate change is an important measure for persuading the whole of society to jointly participate in activities for the mitigation of an adaptation to climate change.
