Abstract

By the end of the cold war era, democracy is believed as the last solution of the world problem. Democracy is believed can solved political, economic and social problems. Fundamental principles of democracy as people participating in politics, transparent system of government, limitations on the power of governments and protection of human rights is perceived as the only solution of the human problem. In muslim world, democracy is responded differently. Some say, democracy is compatible with Islam, what democracy struggle for is similar with the mission of Islam. However, another perspective to say, Islam contrasts with democracy. Democracy is derived from western and secular values while Islam is from god revelation and every Muslim should be bound by Islamic Law.  This paper will describe the argument of Hizbut Tahrir for its objection to democracy. Hizbut Tahrir is an international group that always calls for establishing world state system under Islamic Law called Khilafah. Khilafah, according to Hizbut Tahrir, is the only state political system that is legalized by Islam and derived from Quran and Sunnah (prophetic tradition). The opposition of Hizbut Tahrir toward democracy here can be seen in two aspects. Firstly, the difference of the notion sovereignty, god or human sovereignty. Secondly, the standardization of freedom of the people based on consensus or god law.  Western intellectuals and think tanks include Hizbut Tahrir as one of radical and fundamentalist group.Keyword: Democracy, Hizbut Tahrir, Khilafah, Fundamentalist Group

Abstract

This article aims to critically analyze the secularization perspective on political Islam, focusing on the Indonesian context. The secular perspective has its fundamental doctrine that democracy, separation of State and Religion, and nationalism should be the only system to manage one State. Many people always use kind of argument, even scholars, including in Indonesia, to reject the concept of the Islamic State. This article used descriptive analysis to elaborate the secularization perspective on political Islam in Indonesia and the critical analysis from the Islamic perspective. Furthermore, it also explains the impact of using such a perspective in analyzing the discourse of Political Islam. This article found that the responses of the Muslim figures or people on political Islam in Indonesia are influenced by the secularization perspective instead of using the Islamic perspective. Islamic perspective on political Islam is derived from the Islamic methodology that authoritative scholars have formulated in the past. The secular perspective on politics, as a result, contributed to the decline of the Islamic civilization and colonization from the western power.

Abstract

Abstract As a global Islamic political group, Hizb ut-Tahrir (HT) has experienced many kinds of state coercive responses due its ideas that considered radical and threatening the existing modern political systems. In many places, this group has been rejected and criminalized by regimes either in Muslim majority states or in the Western states.  The same experience has also been faced by HT in Indonesia that went through the change of state policy from accommodating to repressive approach. This study will focus to elaborate the response of the Indonesian government toward HTI from the lens of social movement studies by using state repression concept. This article uses the explanatory method analysis and collects data mainly from literature. This article argues that the state has used several methods to repress HT such as issuing an extraordinary law in dissolving HTI; intimidating HTI`s supporters and activists and stigmatizing or discrediting HTI image. As the result, in 2017 Indonesian government dissolved HTI, then HTI became one of forbidden organizations in Indonesia.

Abstract

The tension between the Islamist group and the state has risen in Indonesia this 2017. In the mid of 2017, Joko Widodo (Jokowi) government has announced to disbandHizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) as one of the Islamist groups in Indonesia. It  happened in the midst of protest toward Jokowi for his ignorance to respond the alleged religious defamation by Ahok, governor of Jakarta. This article explores the discourse used by Jokowi government and its allies to ban HTI in Indonesia. It also explains the reason for the policy produced and political interests behind it. This paper argues that the dissolution of HTI is by no means for legal and security reason but for political interest of Joko Widodo and his political allies.

Abstract

Repressive approach is one of the state's responses to social movements taken to restrain or limit the action of a movement that always strives for a social change process in society. In this context, Hizb ut-Tahrir and the Islamic Defenders Front (Front Pembela Islam – FPI) are two Islamic groups that recently after 2016 have been active in pressuring the government on various political issues. The government responded to these two groups with repressive measures such as stigmatization, criminalization, and dissolving or banning the organization. This study aims to discuss the details of government policies in responding to both HTI and FPI in Indonesia using comparative analysis by collecting secondary data from the media, books, and journals relevant with this study. This study found that the Indonesian government has used various means to repress HTI and FPI, such as intimidation, stigmatization, and disbandment to the organizations.
