Abstract

The objective of this study was  to estimate input demand and output supply for catfish growth out.  The study was conducted in Tulung Agung regency, East Java from August to December 2002. Data were analyzed statistically  by profit function model, using Three-Stages Least Square estimation.  The results of this study showed that the catfish price was elastic and responsive to the changes of catfish  seed and  feed prices, but inelastic to the  changes of human labor.  The catfish price had positive effects on variables input demand and output supply.  These positive effects were more significance than the negative effect of  variables input price

Abstract

The aim of the research was to know the diversity of  zooplankton in Wedi Ombo Bay, Gunung Kidul, Yogyakarta, as candidates of live feed for spiny lobster (Panulirus homarus L.) larvae. Samples were  collected from August 2002 to January 2003 by using Van Dorn tubes water sampler at 0 m, 5 m and 10 m of water depth for each sampling point. The zooplankton was identified to the genera level. The result showed that 8 subclass zooplankton compraised of 24 genera, i.e. 15 genera of Copepoda, 2 genera of Branchiopoda, 1 genera of Ostracoda, 1 genera of Polychaeta, 2 genera of Rotifera, 1 genera of Malacostraca, 1 genera of Heteropoda and 1 genera of Appendicularia were found in Wedi Ombo Bay. Calanus had the highest dominance with density of  479 /50 l (24.1%). This zooplankton was  found in each depth of water. Acartia had the lowest dominance with density of 12/50 l (0,6%). Based on the opening mouth of P. homarus larvae (114 µm), it was found that the18 genera of zooplankton had sizes less than 114 µm which might be suitable for live feed of P. homarus larvae. However, 6 genera of zooplankton had sizes more than 114 µm which might be unsuitable for live feed of P. homarus larvae.Based on the abundance of zooplankton, the size of zooplankton and the opening  mouth of spiny lobster larvae, the best candidates of zooplankton for live feed of P. homarus larvae were Calanus an holoplanktonic copepod and Brachionus, a Rotifera.

Abstract

The objectives of research was to analyses the chromosome numbers of tetraploid goldfish (Carassius auratus) produced by heat shocking method. The tetraploidy was carried out 29 minutes after fertilization of eggs by heat shocking for 1.5 minutes at 400C.The chromosome number was analyzed with the modus of chromosomes. The results indicated that 1)  the diploid control of goldfish has 100.28% + 0.0982 chromosom  with modus numbers of  100, and the tetraploid goldfish has 199.94 + 0.982 chromosomes with number of modus at 200. 2)  The effectiveness of the heat shocking method in goldfish for tetraploidy was 46.60%.The hatching rate of diploid control (65.068% + 0.52%) was significantly diferent with that of  tetraploid fish (24.53% + 1.649%). In addition, the survival rate of diploid controls (86.875% + 6.287). was significantly different with that of tetraploid goldfish (34.274% + 19.289%) and the specific growth rates of diploid controls (5,104 + 0,074) was not significantly diferent that of with tetraploid fish (3.982 + 0.011).

Abstract

Parasites often cause the great loss in aquaculture either in fish or shrimp aquacultures. The loss will become more serious when fish or shrimp are secondary infected especially by bacteria. The objective of this study was to identify parasites in fish and shrimp culture inYogyakartaSpecialProvince (DIY). Samples of fish and shrimp were collected from several aquaculture centers in this region including several fish and shrimp hatcheries. Observation of parasites was conducted microscopically and macroscopically. Results showed that giant tiger prawn (Penaeus monodon) cultured in DIY was often infected by Zoothamnium sp. and Gregarines sp.. In addition, giant freshwater prawn (Machrobrachium rosenbergii) was often infected by Apiosoma sp., Dactylogyrus sp., Epystilis sp., Glossatella piscicola, Gregarines sp. and Zoothamnium sp.. Moreover Apiosoma sp.,  Dactylogyrus sp., Gyrodactylus sp., Ichthyopthirius sp., and Trichodina sp. were found in nile (Oreochromis niloticus) culture. Similar parasites such as Apiosoma sp., Dactylogyrus sp., Henneguya sp. Ichtyoptirius sp. and Trichodina sp..were found in Osphronemus gaurami. Ichtyoptirius sp. and Trichodina sp. also were found in walking catfish (Clarias gariephinus).

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to know the effect of  different light sources on the total catch, species composition and size of fish captured by traditional lift net.  This research was conducted at the Pelabuhan Ratu Waters,West Java.Fishing experiment was conducted for 12 hours each night, for 5 night.  Fishing operation was conducted alternately for two hours using kerosene lamp and electric lamp. The light illumination, temperature, salinity and water current were measured after setting the gear, while the catch data were measured after hauling.  The maximum light penetration of kerosene lamp was able to reach 9 m depth (at the center of lift net), 8 m (at the middle of lift net) and 6 m (at the corner of lift net).  In addition, by using  kerosene and electric lamps, the light penetration was able  reach 11 m (at center and midlle of lift net) and 12 m (at the corner of lift net). The total catch of lift net using kerosene lamp was  85.12 kg (9,086 fishes) comprise of 12 spesies with sizes  5.3 – 42.7 cm, while the total catch using combination of kerosene and electric lamps was  148.67 kg (12,685 fishes) comprise of 18 spesies with sizes 5.95 – 52.78 cm.The results showed, that  the combination of kerosene and electric lamps  was able to increase the  total catch.
