Abstract

Pumpkin (Cucurbita spp.) is susceptible to Begomovirus diseases, causing yellow mosaic and yield losses. This study detected and molecularly characterised a Begomovirus from yellow-mosaic-infected pumpkin in Bengkulu Utara, Bengkulu, Indonesia. Total DNA was extracted using the CTAB method and amplified using universal begomovirus primers SPG1/SPG2. PCR produced a ~912 bp amplicon, confirmed by agarose gel electrophoresis. Sanger sequencing and BLASTn analysis showed the highest identity (95.20%, 99% coverage) to Squash leaf curl China Virus (SLCCV; EF197940, Malaysia). Phylogenetic analysis (MEGA X, NJ method) clustered the isolate with SLCCV from Asia (bootstrap 97%). Findings represent the first molecular confirmation of an SLCCV-related Begomovirus on pumpkin in Bengkulu, extending the known Begomovirus diversity (papaya, cucumber, weeds, eggplant) in local agroecosystems. Full genome sequencing is recommended for species demarcation.

Abstract

Bee pollen from Trigona sp is a natural product rich in bioactive compounds. However, the bioavailability of these compounds is limited due to the presence of exine walls in bee pollen. Fermentation methods using lactic acid bacteria, especially Lactobacillus plantarum, have been reported to increase the bioavailability of bioactive compounds in bee pollen. However, the fermentation process can affect the physical characteristics of the product, including color, total soluble solids (TSS), and pH. This study aimed to determine the effect of fermentation time on the physical characteristics of Trigona sp bee pollen fermented using L. plantarum. The results showed that fermentation time significantly affected the b* value, chroma, total soluble solids, and pH. However, it did not significantly affect the L*, a*, and hue angle values. The b* and chroma values ​​decreased with longer fermentation time due to carotenoid degradation under acidic conditions. Total soluble solids decreased because L. plantarum consumed sugar to produce lactic acid, which also caused a gradual decrease in pH during the fermentation process. These findings indicate that fermentation time plays a significant role in determining the physical quality of Trigona sp. bee pollen.

Abstract

Sweet corn (Zea mays saccharata Sturt.) is a horticultural commodity with high market demand, yet its productivity at the farmer level remains variable. This study aimed to assess sweet corn productivity and analyse factors associated with yield and farmer economic welfare in Curup Selatan District, Rejang Lebong Regency, Bengkulu Province, Indonesia. The study was conducted in March 2026, using purposive sampling, with 42 sweet corn farmers. Primary data were collected through structured interviews and analysed using validity and reliability tests, followed by Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modelling(PLS-SEM). The results showed that the average sweet corn yield was 8.21 tons ha⁻¹. Farmers perceived seed quality and soil condition as the main factors associated with sweet corn productivity. The PLS-SEM model explained 68.5% of the variation in yield and 84.7% of the variation in farmers' economic welfare. Yield had a positive and significant effect on farmer economic welfare, while landholding characteristics and cultivation techniques had positive and significant effects on sweet corn yield. Farming constraints and planting period did not significantly affect yield. These findings indicate that improving seed quality, soil management, and cultivation practices should be prioritised to enhance sweet corn productivity and farmer economic welfare.

Abstract

South Tugu Village has significant potential to develop a tourism village based on natural beauty and local wisdom. One of its emerging attractions is horse tourism, known as Kampung Koboy. However, sustainable development of this attraction requires a assessment of its potential and the formulation of development strategies. This study aimed to identify the development potential of horse tourism in Kampung Koboy, South Tugu Village, based on political, economic, sociocultural, technological, legal, and environmental aspects. Data were collected through interviews with 34 horse farmers and several community leaders involved in the Kampung Koboy community. The data were analyzed using PESTLE (Political, Economic, Sociocultural, Technological, Legal, and Environmental) and SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats) analyses. The results indicate that Kampung Koboy possesses strong potential for further tourism development. Improvements in technology adoption, human resource capacity, and supporting infrastructure are needed to enhance competitiveness and sustainability. Recommended strategies include organizing tourism activities that emphasize local wisdom, developing racehorse breeding programs, offering affordable private group riding packages, implementing training and certification programs for horse breeders, and encouraging community participation in developing distinctive Kampung Koboy products. These strategies are expected to strengthen tourism attractiveness and ensure long term sustainability in South Tugu Village.
