Abstract

Speaking ability is very important to have good communication, especially in international communication. The English learners should have this ability and they must focus the learning on speaking skill. The learners’ failures in learning speaking were caused by the inappropriateness of the strategy or method learning. It happened to them unconciously. It means they are not aware of making inappropriateness in the method. The appropriate method should be applied in learning so that the success can be achieved. To realise the success in improving speaking ability can be done by using community-based learning method. The learning communities should be made to conduct the community-based learning. In these learning communities, the process of learning speaking can be appliead like it is in real communities. Real-like communities makes the learning process run well, because the condition is like the reality. The good process in learning makes the learners feel in the real society and feel enjoyable and confortable. If the learners have good feeling, they will learn speaking eagerly and spiritfully, so they will be succesfull in learning, especially speaking. Key words: Speaking, community-based, and learning

Abstract

This research aims to: (1) show the ungrammaticality of pre-service teachers’ (Bachelor III students’) written tag-switching models and this is disapproving since these subjects are English teachers-to-be. (2) It also tracks tokens of interference of Kirundi, French, Kiswahili and English languages in the Bachelor III students’ written tag-switching examples as a result of the Burundian multilingual education system.The study refers to the observation and Testing as suggested respectively by Cohen et al. (2006) and Hughes (2003). The researcher’s unstructured observation participated in his review of observational data before suggesting any explanation for the phenomena being observed. The test given helped measure on the one hand those pre-service teachers’ achievements of the course objectives and diagnose their strengths and weaknesses on the other hand. The subjects of the study consisted of thirty-six (36) students whose preference was tag-switching in an Exam of Sociolinguistics with the question framed as follows: “Among the different code switching types, choose one and exemplify it with three examples.” The Kuder- Richardson formula 20 (KR-20) and Standard Error Measure (SEM), provided helpful information when having to take decisions about individuals on the basis of their performance in a test such as the one given during this research, (Hughes, ibid:224). The research findings reveal a mismatching between the subjects’ level of study and the written tag-switching examples that they gave: after correction done diligently and skilfully, ungrammaticality is a case and it includes the subjects’ wrong tense use at the tag level and the occurrence of wrong choice of tenses, aspects and mood (either in Kirundi, French and Kiswahili) in the part before tag level. The cause of these erroneous tag- switching examples is revealed to take source in the multilingual education system operational in Burundi. Abstract

Buddhism aims to awake or, ultimately, enlighten the mind. Meditation practice is suggested as the best way to awake the mind, according to Zen. This reflection aimed to explore how Eihei Dogen, a Zen mas-ter, awakes and drawsthe reader or mediator to the point of utterly still meditation where no words and boundaries exist with a focus on one of his writing, The Zen Poetry of Dogen: Verses from the Mountain of Eternal Peace. This reflection also traced back the incident in Sutra that influenced his poetry. A conclu-sion that can be drawn upon this reflection reassures that the poetry of Dogen conveys the original, true es-sence of the mind as revealed in Sutra through Maha Kassapa’s enlightenment and how to practice the mind through various symbols. Abstract

In this presentation I firstly review different approaches and methods that have been used to teaching English. Based on these approaches and methods, our understanding of how students learn their second language has been greatly enhanced. However, students in the 21st Century have more demands and needs than previously and we now have to use more progressive pedagogies to teach them. Some features of a progressive pedagogical approach are: learners are active participants; teachers are facilitators and guides; there is shared decision-making by the group; learning is seen as part of real-life experiences; and learning is conceptualized as a spiral where knowledge is constructed through experience and social interaction (Peters, 2012). This type of pedagogical approach is student-centred and lends itself to the promotion of learner autonomy. By way of an example I will talk about a university level English for Science course I have been involved in developing and teaching over the past five years. Abstract

This study entitled "The Language Maintenance of Mother Tongue in Tourism Area, Ubud". The background of this study is departed from having seen the phenomenon of a rapid tourism development in Ubud. The arrival of tourists, both domestics and foreigners, would have an impact on the interaction be-tween tourists and local communities. The interaction is not merely the culture, but also in terms of commu-nication of how the language is being used. The use of language in daily communication is definitely become an interesting aspect to be discussed because Ubud is known as a multicultural region; some people may think that Ubud is a bule village similar to Kuta. The objective of this study is to determine whether mother tongue is still being used in Ubud, Gian-yar or had it replaced by the foreign language. In addition, this research conducted to find out the strategies used by the people of Ubud to maintain the sustainability of mother-tongue language in the region. The method used for this research is a field research. The research conducted by a non-participatory observation; researchers act to make observations and not directly involved in the interaction at the time of the study. Research techniques that used are documentations, records and depth interviews. The results ana-lyzed by approach which was proposed by Fasold (1972). It is also supported by Fishman’s approach; both concern with language maintenance. The interview results are expected to answer strategies used by speakers of the local community in preserving the language. The presentation of the data described in qualitative de-scriptive method. Abstract

This research involved Thailand and Indonesia which is a multilingual country and has 749 dialects thoroughly. Dialect influences the way people speak foreign language in term of pronunciation, grammar and accent; the speech of people from different social and region. This paper investigates problems with English pronunciation among Javanese, Sundanese, Thai, and Thai-Malay students. Identifying key reasons of the pronunciation problems began by discussing the value of intelligible pronunciation and reviewing the rele-vant literature. Next, it focuses on the participants’ pronunciation problems in term of consonant phonemes. The method of this research is mixed method research. It means, the researcher employed qualitative and quantitative method to collect, to analyze, and to draw the conclusion of the data analysis. As the result, the researcher found varieties of English consonants pronunciation uttered by four dialects. Thai has difficulties in pronouncing allophones /z/, /θ/, /ð/, /ʃ/, /v/, /tʃ/, /b/, /dʒ/, /d/, /l/, /t/, /s/, /k/, /b/. Thai-Malay had difficulties in pronouncing allophones /z/, /θ/, /ð/, /ʃ/, /v/, /tʃ/, /b/, /dʒ/, /k/, /s/. Meanwhile, Javanese had difficulties in pronouncing /θ/, /ð/, /ʃ/, /v/, /tʃ/, /z/, /dʒ/, /k/, /w/, /g/. Sundanese had difficulties in pronouncing allophones /ð/, /v/, /tʃ/, /θ/, /p/, /ʃ/, /f/, /s/. Furthermore, Thai student had the highest varieties of pronouncing English consonants. Otherwise, Sundanese was the lowest one.
