Abstract

This article concerns with a systemic stylistic analysis on a poem in terms of Systemic Functional Linguistics and Verbal Art Semiotics. The writing uses library research, qualitative data, documentary study, descriptive method and intrinsic-objective approach. The semantic analysis results in both automatized and foregrounded meanings. Then the automatized meaning produces lexical cohesion and in turn, it produces subject matter. Meanwhile, the foregrounded meaning produces the literary meaning and in turn, it creates theme. Finally, the analysis indicates that the subject matter is about the singing bird, the literary meaning is about temporal change and the theme is about natural law.

Abstract

This article explores the variation of interpersonal meanings construction in the Oprah Winfrey talk show. It focuses on how Oprah Winfrey, the host of the program, constructs meanings interpersonally in the progress of her conversations. Using systemic functional grammar, a transcript of the Oprah dialogues was analyzed through identification of clause mood structure and speech function. The patterns of mood structures and speech functions, the use of mood elements, like subject, finite, complement, adjuncts and modals were investigated. In analyzing the data, the researchers also explore the use of non verbal communication features by Oprah during her talk. This is used to enrich interpretations towards the data being analyzed. The results suggest that Oprah uses her time asking questions to her guest/s. Oprah uses various ways of digging more information by especially employing those probing and rhetorical questions. The first one is indicated by confirming, clarifying, exploring points and exclamation and the second is done by gaining agreement, cross questioning and reviewing questions. Another finding is the fact that she is also very good at integrating non verbal language features in her talk such as facial expressions and tones in order to make meanings easy to transfer.

Abstract

The design of a building surely considers the people who will use it. It may involve the number of people, their relationship, and how the people will use. As we see a building, we will get clues about the users or the people in the building. Reading a text can reveal who is the writer, to whom it is addressed, and the subject of person or parties it talks about, and the relationship among them. This gives an assumption that text and the architecture have participants to consider. The paper will try to explore relation mechanism among the participants of the adhan text, as a call for prayers for Moslem, as it is physically reflected on the mosque design. The participants in the discourse and the physical form are human and God. The operation of the relation there covers the horizontal relation among the individuals, and the transcendental relation between the individual of human as creature in one side and God as the creator, in another. These operations are explored through analysis on the semiotics of architectural elements: form, partition, size, and the arrangement of interior and exterior properties. Thus, mosque with its distinctive design is actually a piece of discourse which tells a story among of which there is a fact about the participants and their relation mechanism, just like a written commonly does.

Abstract

Good language learner studies show that attending to form is associated with successful learning. This paper reports interviews with three university English majors who had been the best students in a talk show program and got a score band of 7 or beyond in IELTS. The interviewees regarded text memorization and imitation as the most effective methods of learning English. They had been initially forced to use these methods but gradually came to appreciate them. The practice enabled them to attend to and learn collocations and sequences, to borrow these sequences for productive use, to improve pronunciation, and to develop the habit of attending to details of language in the context of language input. The paper concludes that such practice enhances noticing and rehearsal and hence facilitates second language acquisition.

Abstract

This article attempts to present a profile of two successful English language learners who are found to hold strong learning styles. Learning styles are considered as the factors that not only have great influence but are also embedded to the attempt for selecting the strategies used to attack the perplexing learning problems or tasks. The learning strategies as the factor leads a successful learning should be channeled into other factors that juxtapose with this factor. The present article would present how certain affective and cognitive domains of learning styles have made particular learning strategies become effective. By means of a multi case study, that describes two different phenomena and compares them for reducing the risk of error, the present study tries to give more contribution towards the study on the Good Language Learner that has been so far being the concern of many scholars. Such an investigation would help other learners of the same traits or endowment to adopt as well as adapt the strategy. Besides, this can be used as a model for strategy training that is hosted to help less fortunate learners who study English.

Abstract

This article presents some practical applications of computer in English language teaching and learning. As computer now is getting more accessible, it should be well utilized for enhancing students’ English skills. In addition, a lot of computer language laboratories have been set up in some schools. However, some of the facilities are useless because less preparation, low usability of the facility, and lack of maintenance so that the sustainability of the computer program at schools is very weak. This article explores what computer can do to help students learn English better and what teachers, students, and administrator have to do in order to achieve the English teaching and learning objectives.

Abstract

Insufficient knowledge of English is one of the major problems that Thai students face in translating from Thai into English and the kinds of knowledge individual students lack are different. To deal with this, instructors need tools that can solve the problems each student is facing. Computer-assisted language learning (CALL), which encourages independent learning, was introduced as a tool to facilitate individual students’ English language learning of all types, including translation. The main purpose of this study was, therefore, to investigate how CALL could improve the Thai students’ translation skill. News headlines convey the gist of the news and have distinctive syntactic properties, newspaper headlines were therefore chosen for this study. The findings reveal that, first; the types of errors that Thai students made in translation were wrong use/translation, omission, and redundant use. In terms of linguistics, they made grammatical, discourse, and lexical errors. Second, noticing in cooperation with CALL can reduce those errors significantly. Third, the students showed their highly positive attitude toward using CALL to improve their translation skills. Fourth, the learner-centered, independent learning method was effective for solving individual students’ problems in translation. Finally, the use of CALL not only enhances the students’ translation skill but also encourages independent language learning effectively.
