Abstract

This paper describes theoretical and experimental study of the static bearing stiffness. This research is motivated by the role of bearing stiffness in determining the natural frequency of a rotor-shaft system. Previous investigators, White and Harris, have developed an analytical tool to calculate the bearing stiffness. However, this analytical results were not supported by experimental data. In this work, an experimental study was done in order to determine the static bearing stiffness. These experimental results are then compared to those obtained by White and Harris analysis. The analysis and experimental study will pave the way toward the determination of the dynamic bearing stiffness.

Abstract

Welded joints loaded cyclically are prone to fatigue because they provide srress concentrations due to geometry changes, weld profile shapes and microscopic defects in the welds". Allowable stresses for welded joints under cycliuzlly loading must be based on empirical values.

Abstract

Until now, Indonesia does not have any dynamics exhaust pollution test standard, which is customized to Indonesian traffic and climate. On the other hand, the air pollution problem in Indonesian big cities has reached a critical level. Some researches done by some institutions (including ITB) show that the air pollution level in Jakarta and some other big cities is mainly caused by transportation, industry, domestic, and trash burning. Among those four pollution sources, transportation (motorized vehicles) is the most significant. Therefore, in order to solve the air pollution problem effectively, it has to be started from the transportation sector, and It is very important to do an intensive research which leads to a establishment of a test standard for exhaust gas pollution that is designed based on Indonesian condition. The application of a suitable dynamics exhaust gas pollution test standard is expected to support the pollution monitoring and control activities all over Indonesia, especially in big cities, so that the Indonesian air pollution can be reduced and maintained in a save level.

Abstract

In the present situation there is a tendency to avoid as far as possible the use of the synthetic substances as refrigerant which can destroy ozone layer and increase average contribute to the A much more safe philosophy must be to revert to natural refrigerants, substances which are already present in our environment. The use of C02 as refrigerant is one attempt to this approach. This new refrigeration technology use special cycle called "Lorentzen Cycle".  Lorentzen 's invention opened a wide way to enhance the refrigeration technology and brought a lot of applications that can use this new cycle. This paper try to explain the basic principle of"Lorentzen Cycle" and one of such applications which has being developed at Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

Abstract

A simple correlation and prediction of β-carotene in supercritical CO2 involving cosolvents has been developed. Several cubic equations (EOS) and proper mixing rules are employed in correlating available experimental data of solubility fl-carotene in supercritical CO2 involving polar cosolvents. The studies found that strong interaction in the system involving polar cosolvents occurred for which binary interaction parameters should be adjusted for correlating solubility of β-carotene. The strong interaction could be possibly that of solute-solute, solute- cosolvent or cosolvent association. The simple model, however, can predict solubility of β-carotene in that system studied after adjusting binary interaction parameters.

Abstract

The performance of cyclone separator is measured by its capability to separate solid particles from dust laden gas flow and its pressure drop. The last parameter shows the energy used for running it. The cyclone having highest separation efficiency and lowest pressure drop is needed in the industrial application. It is the aim of this research work to study a modified cyclone in order to find a better performance than the classical cyclone type. The modification is employed by inclining the roof of cyclone. With this modification, the pressure drop could be reduced of about 50% without significantly reducing of separation efficiency. This paper presents an investigation of performance of the modified cyclone. This experiment proposes some empirical correlation of separation efliciency and pressure drop at various values of dust load.

Abstract

The combustion process in an intemal combustion engine must be known in detail to find out the dependence of its operating conditions on the engines performance. This paper discusses a computer program that simulates the combustion processes of a two-stroke engine. The simulation includes modelling the heat transfers from the cylinder and crankcase, modelling the heat releases for gasoline and diesel engines, modelling the gas properties, modelling the energy balance, and modelling the flow coefficients through the ports. The performance of the two-stroke engine can be obtained from the simulation. As a case study, a two stroke MK1 engine was simulated and the simulation results the maximum indicated power is 18.3 hp at 5500 rpm and the maximum indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) is 4.2 bar at 5000 rpm.

Abstract

This paper evaluate the elastic field that induced by a uniform pressure applied over a circular area on the surface of an elastic half space. The half space is transversely isotropic, where the planes of isotropy are parallel to the surface. A potential function method is adopted where the elastic field is written in terms of three harmonic functions. The known point force Green functions are used to find the solution for uniform normal load over the area by quadrature. The elastic displacement and stress field are evaluated in term of closed form expressions containing complete elliptic integrals of the first, second and third kinds. Following limiting procedure allows the isotropic solution to be obtained. It is shown that the present results agree with the previous published solutions but the new solutions could be put in a more convenient form. Special consideration is also given to derive the limiting form of the stress field on the surface.

Abstract

The thermohydraulic aspect utilization on a nuclear reactor is very dominant, because the system gives limitation on the reactor operation. Regarding the problem, theoretical analysis of thermohydraulic aspect is done for a research reactor of 2 MW with hexagonal configuration of fuel elements With an assumption that the power generation each fuel element is the same and the other facilities are neglected, the output of FLUENT V4.25 program gave information that theoretically this research reactor can be operated on thermal power of 2 MW.

Abstract

A fluidized bed is a bed comprises a mixture of solid particles suspension in stream of gas. The heat transfer phenomenon between the surface of immersed body to/from fluidized bed is very complicated mechanism. Aside from the governing variables on conventional convective heal transfer, the rate of heat transfer coefficient in fluidized bed, is also influenced by physical and geometrical properties of solid particle. One of the variables which governs the value of thermal convective heat transfer coefiicient is voidage. The influence of voidage on thermal convective heat transfer coefficient at low Reynolds number will be reported on this paper.
