Abstract

This study reports an analysis of self-concept in Alice Childress’ drama entitled The World on a Hill. The focus of the study is the main character identified as The Boy or Winston. The problems to be investigated in the study are (1) What is The Boy’s self-concept?, (2) What factors affect The Boy’s self-concept?, and (3) How does The Boy’s self-concept develop? The study adopts both intrinsic (character) and extrinsic (psychological) approaches and is designed as a descriptive qualitative research. The results of the study show that the self-concept of the main character (the Boy) has Impacts toward his Behaviors and Mannerism. Also, there are at least three factors that affect his self-concept: physical appearance, goals and expectation and family condition. The boy’s self-concept develops from his understanding and acceptance of his weaknesses and strengths and then begins to set priorities in life to make his dream come true.

The theoretical framework of the studies are: literary theory of character, literary theory of morality and ethical framework, literary theory of sensuality, literary theory of conflict and literary theory of deviation. Abstract

This article reports a study on the problem of non-equivalence in the Indonesian translation of English adverbs of manner at word level. The aim of this study is to examine the translation of English adverbs of manner for SL (English) into TL (Indonesian) with Mona Baker’s strategy of translation as the theoretical framework. The qualitative descriptive research design is adopted in the study. The data source is David Nicholls’ novel One Day (2009) and its Indonesian translation (2012). The study involved 118 data. Of these,  seventy-seven (77) data are showing equivalence, and forty-one (41) data non-equivalence. As expected, the equivalent data are translated into the word or phrase structure of ber-, se+Adj 2x+ nya, se+Adj+N, per-, dengan+Adj, suffix –nya in the TL text. The focus of analysis is in the non-equivalent data. Two strategies were found:  (1) translation by mission and (2) translation by a more neutral word. The reasons for the omission of the adverbs of manner include: the TL texts have already use other words with similar meaning, sufficient information without their mention, the context has made it clear. The reasons for the second strategy include avoidance of awkward meaning and building a more neutral sense.

Abstract

This articles aims to observe the relationship between hyponym and entailment in Japanese.Semantics is study of language meaning. It is as confirmed by Chomsky (1965), that “Semantics is one component of the grammar (the other two components are syntax and phonology) and meaning of a sentence isdetermined by the semantic component”. From the description on hyponim and entailment, it is understoodthat the relationship between hyponym and entailment conveys a sentence parallel meaning. Because of the meaning contained in hiponim also present in entailment. Example: a) I keep a cat //Watashi wa neko okatte imasub) I maintain an animal / /Watashi Doubutsuwa o Katte imasu. In the above example sentence: The catis the hyponym of animaland the truth of the secondsentence (b) is in line with the truth of the first sentence (a) The first sentence means (a) has an absoluterelationship with the second sentence (b). The statement is called the entailment

Abstract

This article reports a study of the translation strategies used in solving the problems of non-equivalence in translating English text into Indonesian. The study adopts Baker’s (1992) classification of translation strategies. The text being investigated are an English novel by Lian Gouw entitled Only A Girl (2009) and its Indonesian version entitled Only A Girl-Menantang Phoenix (2010). Using descriptive qualitative research design, the study attempts to identify and find explanation of the translation strategies used in 105 sentences, collected up to the fifth chapter of the novel. The result of the study shows that, from 105 data, seven strategies are found to be used in the translation: (a) translation by superordinate/more general word (12 data), (b) translation by a more neutral or less expressive word (3 data), (c) translation by cultural substitution (9 data), (d) translation using a loan word or loan word plus explanation (6 data), (e) translation by paraphrase using a related word (18 data), (f) translation by paraphrase using unrelated words (21 data), and (g) translation by omission (36 data). The choice of the strategies depends on the context of the text and shows the translator’s attempt to present a clear meaning of the text, particularly when the items are not lexicalized in the target language.

Abstract

This study reports an analysis on the exchange structure in conversation between the hosts and the callers in Metro TV’s “After Hours”  English program. The purpose of this study is to find out the types of initiating – responding acts produced by the hosts and the callers. Adopting Strenstrom’s theory (1994) as the theoretical framework, this study uses the qualitative approach  to examine ten (10) conversations in the “After Hours” program. The analysis shows that there are certain exchanges of initiating – responding acts which match Strenstrom’s theory. However there are also exchanges that do not match the theory. The study found that 18 points in the ten conversations do not match Strenstrom’s theory. The possible reasons for this mismatch include the fact that the host and the callers share a common knowledge, and the addressee wants to give information to the speaker to correct the speaker’s assumption. Despite the occasional unmatched responses, the conversation goes well and the speakers can understand each other well.

Abstract

This research into English research articles (RAs) produced by native English writers focuses on the organization of information (or news) in the Introduction section. Specifically it focuses on the information organization in a paragraph and between paragraphs of the section. The study investigates the news structures inside a paragraph as well as those between paragraphs in the section. The study involves ten (10) internationally published journal articles. The results indicate a general tendency for the new information in the native English RA Introductions to be organised and presented in an accumulative strategy, and the accumulation may be achieved in various ways. The study is hoped to shed lights and insights for the non-native English researchers who aim for international publication, in how they may organize their research reports.
