Abstract

In cross-cultural studies, understanding the nuances of apologies in various languages is crucial to reducing misunderstandings and enhancing interpersonal relationships. This research employs a qualitative method by comparing the speech act of apology in Indonesian and English, focusing on linguistic structures, social contexts, and communication strategies. By analyzing expressions of apology in the Indonesian comic House Daddy and the English comic I Hate That I Love You, the study highlights cultural differences and their impact on the ability to express apologies and repair relationships. The findings reveal similarities and differences: both languages emphasize politeness, tone of speech, and providing reasons in apologies, but differ in gender perspectives, indirect apology strategies, cultural contexts, and intonation expressions. This study contributes to the fields of pragmatics and sociolinguistics by offering insights into how cultural nuances shape communication, with implications for enhancing cross-cultural interactions.

Abstract

This study aims to discern patterns of blasphemy directed towards Islam, Christianity, and Hinduism, drawing from content sourced from YouTube videos. The focal points of interest in this investigation are individuals who have garnered public attention through their acts of blasphemy: Muhammad Kece (MK), Yahya Waloni (YW), and Desak Made Darmawati (DMD). Employing a qualitative approach, the researchers transcribed and coded the datasets according to established coding regulations. Forensic linguistics techniques were integrated to analyze both written and oral evidence, enhancing the depth of understanding of the data.Furthermore, the study incorporates van Leeuwen's approach to unveil the linguistic patterns inherent in blasphemous speech. The findings reveal that the subjects primarily utilized strategies of individualization and objectification in their representation of social actors. Blasphemy was predominantly employed by the subjects to articulate their discontent with their former religious affiliations, while simultaneously extolling the virtues of their current beliefs. Notably, they frequently resorted to comparative analyses of religious characteristics, including symbols, conceptions of God, and religious practices, to convey their blasphemous sentiments. This study sheds light on the complex dynamics of religious discourse and highlights the role of language in perpetuating religious intolerance. By examining instances of blasphemy across multiple religions, it underscores the need for greater understanding and respect among diverse religious communities. Moreover, the findings underscore the significance of forensic linguistics in unraveling the intricacies of blasphemous discourse, offering valuable insights for addressing and mitigating instances of religiously motivated hate speech.
