Abstract

This research aims in analyzing a song entitled “We are the World 25 for Haiti”. This song was first introduced by Michael Jackson in 1985 named “We are the World 1985” when he made collaboration with other musicians for USA for Africa (United Support of Artists for Africa). The single was intended as a charity single to raise funds for famine relief efforts in Ethiopia who have suffered political instability and disaster drought in 1984-1985. Then, this song is chosen to be used for collecting funds in rehabilitating Haiti after the enormous earthquake. This paper focuses on the composer’s attitudes, the social relation among the participants, the context of the situation, and the power relation in the discourse. The lyrics are taken as the object of the research. The data were initially analyzed based on Martin and Rose (2003). The findings showed that the all types of attitude were found, they were expressing feelings, judging people’s character, and appreciating things. But one parts of judging people’s character was not found in the song lyrics. The result of the study is hoped to be beneficial for readers to have a better understanding about the Critical Discourse Analysis

Abstract

This study is conducted to find out the pronunciation errors made by the first semester students of English Education Department in STKIP CBN. In conducting the data, the researcher gave the pre-test to the informants, then; the researcher recorded the performances and transcribed the data. The secondary data was gathered from the interview. Based on the data analysis The researcher counted that there are nine types of errors pronunciation made by the subjects. The first error is the subjects substituted a vowel /æ/ and six consonants /kj/,/tʃ/,/ʃ/,/dʒ/ and /ʒ/ with Indonesian sounds. The second error is the subjects substituted some English vowels into Indonesian vowel. The third error is word cognates cases. The fourth is language interference. The fifth is pronouncing the silent consonant /h/. The sixth error is Deleting or omitting some consonants that appeared at the end of some English words. The seventh error is the subjects pronounced the silent consonant /t/ in the word “often”. The eighth error is the subjects added the consonant /r/ at the word, that word doesn’t required the consonant /r/. The last error is some subjects seemed to generalize the pronunciation of the past tense morpheme which is ended by a bound morpheme /ed/. This research is founded that there are three causes of students’ pronunciation error made in speaking English. The first is an interference errors, the second is an intra lingual errors and the last is a developmental error.

Abstract

This research aims at finding out whether thinkpair-share model of learning can be applied to improve the vocabulary mastery of the second semester of PAI 1 FTIK IAIN Palu. The researcher focused the vocabulary learning with the objectives: 1) to know the meaning of the words; 2) to know the pronunciation of the words; 3) to know the category of the words; and 4) to know how to use the words in sentences or contexts. The subject of this research was 20 students of the second semester of PAI 1 FTIK IAIN Palu. This was a classroom action research which was done in two months. The researcher applied two cycles during the research. The result of the research shows that the application of think-pair-share model can improve the vocabulary learning of the the second semester of PAI 1 FTIK IAIN Palu. This can be proven by the increase from 8 students (40%) in cycle 1 to 15 students (75%) who got score greater than 75 of 20 students in cycle 2. The treatment was stopped after 75% of the classical achievement has met the criteria of success. Therefore, the application of think-pair-share technique was effective to improve the vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

The study attempted to design reading materials for Medical Science at one of Vocational High Schools Medical Science in Serang. To produce satisfactory teaching materials, the researchers did the following steps: doing needs analysis, reviewing the principles of materials design and reading in a foreign language, designing course framework, designing syllabus, designing the reading materials, and implementing the sample lessons. The researchers employed qualitative methods in gathering the data. The instruments used were questionnaire and interview. The questionnaire was addressed to students, alumni, teachers and institution. The interview was collected from the companies or users that have ever recruited the graduated students. The needs analysis was carried out by distributing questionnaires. The results were then analyzed. The result of needs analysis, became the basis for the researchers to design course framework. The course framework was then developed into a syllabus. Finally the syllabus became the basis for designing reading materials. The reading materials for Vocational High School Husada Pratama applied a topical syllabus. Each lesson or unit had different topics, greeting and introduction. Introduction about nurse, health, dioalogue conversation nurse and patient, eat healthy food, profile a nurse, tools, disease, nutrition, the healthy diet pyramid. Each lesson also adopted various reading skills or strategies. They were skimming, scanning, and guessing meaning from context. When the materials had been designed, the researchers implemented six out of ten lessons of the coursebook. The results were satisfactory. Most students mentioned that the coursebook was related to their field of study. The majority of the students also said that the materials were understandable and interesting. Abstract

This study aimed to identify the integrated lesson as an alternative teaching strategy in pronunciation teaching. The pronunciation teaching mainly focused on word ending of past tense regular verbs. The participants of the study included a lecturer and 30 students of English education department. To collect the data, the researcher used observation and reading test. The result showed that the lecturer employed the integrated lesson based on some criteria: the students, the lecturer, the learning environment, the learning resources, and the classroom activities. The reading test result showed that from 30 students, 11 students got 100% of correctness, 3 students got 95% of correctness, 5 students got 90% of correctness, 4 students got 85% of correctness, 3 students got 80% of correctness, 2 students got 75% correctness, and 2 students got 70% of correctness. It was indicated that integrated lesson accomplished by the lecturer with careful planning and preparation could give positive influence to the students’ language comprehension and performance.

Abstract

Improving English vocabulary through listening can be done by using English songs that are liked by learners. Therefore, the objectives of this research are to know whether there is an influence of listening to English songs on learners’ vocabulary at LKP Nuansa Jaya English Course in Jakarta or not and to identify and classify the word classes of six selected English pop songs. This is a quantitative and qualitative descriptive research employed by 15 young learners. There is an influence of listening English song on learners’ vocabulary at LKP Nuansa Jaya since the average score of listening test is 75.33. Dealing with identifying and classifying the word classes of six selected English song lyrics, it indicates that the most difficult word class is noun (9.51%); the second is adjective (12.08%); the third is verb (13.37%); the forth is preposition (14.14%); the fifth is adverb (15.17%); the sixth is conjunction (17.22%); the seventh or the easiest one is pronoun (18.51%). As a result, to increase learners’ vocabulary knowledge and mastery, word classes are identified chronologically in every song lyric; then, it is designed into a pocket dictionary. The selection of word classes are based on the results of learners’ vocabulary scores and familiarity. The more difficult the word classes are the more examples are provided. Besides, the meaning of the word classes is translated into Indonesian to make learners easy to understand. Keywords: Listening, English Pop Songs, Vocabulary
