Abstract

The mangrove communities of the Central Queensland coastline are structurally and floristically intermediate between the relatively simple, temperate mangrove communities to the south, and the more complex and luxuriant communities to the north. Climatically the central Queensland coastline is subtropical with a low (1011 mm) annual rainfall, falling mainly in the summer months; evaporation rates are high, particularly in winter. As a result of a four-metre tidal range and a gentlysloping depositional coastline, the areal extent of mangroves is large and most topographic and physiognomic types are represented. Twelve species of mangroves occur in the study area and although zonation is recognizable, the zones are neither constant nor discrete. In the Port Curtis area, three large plots (500 m2 have been established in which all mangroves have been numbered and tagged since January 1975. The results of the initial investigation of the plots are presented together with some of the changes noted on re-examination after 12 months.

Abstract

The community structure of seagrass in Enggano Islands has been studied in August 2004. The aim of the study was to assess the seagrass community including species composition, density, and distribution pattern. The study was executed using transect quadrat methods, where seagrasses were counted in quadrats of 50 cm2. The result showed that the Enggano Islands seagrasses consist of seven species Enhalus acoroides, Halophila ovalis, Thallasia hemprichii, Cymodocea rotundata, Cymodocea serrulata, Halodule uninervis, and Syringodium isoetifolium. The highest density occurred in Dua Island dominated by Thallasia hemprichii (363.3 shoots m-2), while the lowest density occurred in Merbau Island dominated by Enhalus acoroides (0.4 shoot m-2). The highest diversity index (HB) occurred in Kiape Bay (1.446) and the lowest in Merbau Island (0.634). In general, seagrass community in Enggano Islands was dominated by Thallasia hemprichii. All species has clumped distribution pattern (Id > 1).

Abstract

To compensate the decline of the populations of temperate anguillid eels, tropical anguillid eels become getting attention of East Asian eel market in recent years. Many eel farms have been established in Java Island to culture tropical anguillid eels intending to export the products to East Asia. Since eel farming is reliant on wild-caught anguillid eels such as glass eels, elvers and yellow eels, these eel seeds have been captured in various places in Indonesia. However, it is still unknown that how much of tropical anguillid eels are caught as seeds for eel farming. This study showed two different patterns of the commodity chains of eel seeds from both Sukabumi Regency and Bengkulu Province to the eel farms in Java Island. Official catch statistics on anguillid eels found in both Sukabumi Regency and Bengkulu Province were also analyzed on their features and problems underlied. Considering the sustainable use of anguillid eel resources and critical stances on exploitation of eel seeds from all over the world, the Indonesian government should take an immediate action for developing the national catch statistics on anguillid eel fishery as soon as possible.

Abstract

The main objective of this study was to determine reproductive strategy including major spawning season of tropical abalone (Haliotis asinina) from southern Lombok waters, Indonesia. Gonad bulk index, maturity stages and oocyte size frequency distribution were applied to document gonadal development and major spawning season. The results of this study show that H. asinina in southern Lombok waters displayed year-round spawning with a high proportion occurring in August - November, when gonad index dropped to a lower level and high proportion of partly spawned and/or spent ovaries occurred in the population. Gonad development and spawning in males and females occurred synchronously. The correlation between gonadal development and environmental factors are described and discussed.

Abstract

Oceanographic observations are published, taken by the research vessel Siboela in 1949 at 57 stations in the Celebes Sea and around Halmahera. Basing on these observations, an analysis is made of the Subtropical Lower Water (salinity-Maximum) in this region and is compared with the observations of the Snellius and the Dana in 1929. The distribution of the oxygen content allows a distinction of the Lower Water into a northern and a southern water type, which regions of origion are situated in 23°N between 165°E and 165°W and in 15°S between 120° and 150°W respectively. It is shown that the temperature of the salinity maximum in 1949 is 1.4° higher and the salinity 0.11‰ lower than in 1929. The topography of the salinity maximum, which lies in about 100 to 200 m, is closely correlated with the surface currents.

Abstract

Study on mangrove forest in the coastal zone of Lampung Bay, Province of Lampung was carried out on March 12 — 30, 2007. The data was collected from 8 stations, (Pidada Bay, Limbungan, Puhawang Kecil Island, Kalangan, Klagian Island, Kapuran, Ringgung, and Hurun Bay) based on the transect method. The result showed that the mangrove in the coastal zone of Lampung Bay was dominated by Rhizophora apiculata. The floristic composition of mangrove in this area consisted of 31 species. Recently, the extent of mangrove in the coastal zone of Lampung Bay was decreasing due to conversion of mangrove into human settlement, fishpond, road, and uncontrolled mangrove exploitation. This situation leads to the depletion of the living organisms which inhabit this area.

Abstract

The relatively constant equatorial marine environment provides a milieu within which biotic factors provide the chief selective forces acting on fish species. Increasing diversity increases evolutionary opportunity by heterotrophic magnification. Niche availability is almost limitless, space (volume) is the ultimate constraint. Abiotic thresholds, e.g., seasonal isotherms, are filter barriers to emigration to higher latitudes. Beyond such thresholds, abiotic, factors become the chief selective forces acting on fish species.

Abstract

Bunguran waters is part of Natuna waters consisting of several small islands located in the southern part of South China Sea, between Sumatera and Kalimantan Island. This paper reported results of a study on spatial distribution and condition of coral reefs and other biota in Bunguran waters,i.e. percentage cover and diversity of coral species. The observation was conducted using line intercept transect (LIT) on eight stations distributed in Salor Island, Sedanau Island, Komang Island, Kumbik Island, Depeh Strait, Sabangmawang Island, Pulau Tiga Village and Tekolampak Cape. The results showed that the reef type of Bunguran were mostly fringing reef dominated by Porites cylindrica, P. lutea and P. rus. Porites spp. were evenly distributed in all location observed. A total of 115 coral species belonging to 16 genera were found and the percentage of living coral cover ranged from 43.20 to 63.53 %. Coral cover reached their maximum at 10–15 meter depth and decreased rapidly coincident with the increasing depth. In general, the condition of coral cover was in “good” category with the average percentage living cover of coral was estimated 51.38%.

Abstract

During the period of 1969 to 1975 "JANHIDROS" carried out several hydrographic surveys and marine investigations in the Sunda Shelf and its adjacent waters. Data obtained during these surveys has shown that the general characteristics of the area which are primarily governed by the monsoonal regime are also affected by local conditions. The purpose of this paper is to render data based on these surveys which may be useful to complement environmental information.

Abstract

Histological examination of gonad of female redbelly yellowtail fusilier Caesio cuning was carried out in order to describe the oocyte development and annual changes of ovarian composition. The oocyte development was devided into seven stages: peri-nucleolus (PN), oil-droplet (OD), primary yolk (PY), secondary yolk (SY), tertiary yolk (TY), migratory (M) and maturation (Mt) stages. The histological examination of ovarian composition showed that the fish had three peak spawning seasons: in June-July, October-November and February-March. Various kind of developing oocytes found in the same ovaries suggested multiple spawner and asynchronous type of ovarian dynamic.
