Abstract

Malaria is still a major public health problem that urgently needs some new treatments due to the development of resistance by the most dangerous parasitic species, Plasmodium falciparum. The parasite responsible to malaria which claimed as the most lethal disease are endless handled due to increasing prevalence. Based on World Malarial Report in 2015 by WHO, about 214 million cases of malaria and 438,000 death occurred among them. Moreover, discontinue of artemisinin because of its resistance in Southeast Asia indicate that the discovery of new antimalarial drug is highly important. This review present recent research and development progress in antimalarial drug discovery from natural sources especially on terrestrial.

Abstract

Ethnic Ngadha is one of the largest traditional communities in Ngada District. In the middle of globalization and modernity, their lives are still held in the tradition which is a heritage from their ancestors. One of a special characteristic of this tradition is the ceremonies in their community. This research has been done in February to May 2016 at Tiwuriwu, Watumanu and Dariwali villages, Jerebu’u Sub-District, District of Ngada. The aims of this research were to inventories the species of the plant, to investigate their meaning in each ceremony and conservation efforts undertaken by the community. The methods were used to collect the data was exploratory, participant observation and interviews. Based on this research, we found 60 of plants species including 26 families were used in ceremonies of ethnic Ngadha. The Poaceae is the most used family in their ceremonies with 15 species, Fabaceae with 8 species, Arecaceae with 6 species, Musaceae and Solanaceae each of them 3 species, while other families between 1 or 2 species. Each type of species has a specific meaning in any ceremonies in accordance with the intent and purpose of the ceremony. The efforts to conserve these plants have been done by local people by cultivation the plants around their yard, garden or field.

Abstract

The research was distributed by the rampant use of synthetic drugs in treating various diseases, the minimal use of traditional medicine and the lack of data on traditional medicinal plants. The purpose of this research is to explore the medicinal plants in the village of Kangae Tatin, Blata, Sikka. Samples of medicinal plants are collected by exploration survey techniques after obtaining information by interviewing key informants and respondents in the village. The data information of medicinal plants is presented in the form of tabulated and described comprehensively. Results of the study found 13 species of medicinal plants used in the village of Blata Tatin i.e. sambiloto (Andrographis paniculata), bananas (Musa sp.), Hibiscus tiliaceus L., sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas), candlenut (Aleurites moluccana L.), turmeric (Curcuma domestica Val.), Kaempferia galanga L., ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.), coconut (Cocos nucifera), Paederia scandens Merr, Centella asiatica L., Piper betle L. and spinach (Amaranthus spinosus L.).

Abstract

The conducted of this study was to investigate the effect of yeast on growth and survival rate of freshwater pomfret fish. This research used complete randomized design with five treatments, each with 3 replications. The treatments was given by treament A (0 gr yeast/ kg feed), B ( 5 gr yeast/ kg feed), C (10 gr yeast/kg feed), D (15 gr yeast/ kg feed), E (20 gr yeast/ kg feed). Frequency of feeding was 2 times a day 5%bb. This research showed that the addition of yeast significally influenced growth and survival rate of pomfret fish. The higest yeast dossage in feed causing highest growth of pomfret fish.

Abstract

Nanofiltration membranes occur due to the process of pressure differentials to separate the solut larger than the solution. This membrane is used in water purification processes, such as water softening, dye removal, and micropolutan removal. Membranes have several important criteria to determine membrane performance as filtration, namely flux (permeability), rejection (permectivity), thickness, morphology and mechanical properties of the membrane. This article is expected to provide ideas and recommendations regarding membrane characterization and the manufacture of nanofiltration membranes using modified polyamide membranes.

Abstract

Sorghum is a cereal plant that can grow in various environmental conditions so that it is potential to be developed, especially on dry climate marginal land in Indonesia. Sweet sorghum has great potential to be used as raw material for ethanol besides sugar cane. Cultivation of sweet sorghum has shifted from food and feed raw materials to industrial raw materials, both small and large scale. This study aims to obtain reducing sugar levels as raw material for bioethanol through hydrolysis using a microwave. As much as 10 grams of sorghum powder is suspended with dilute H2SO4 solution of 0.1 N, 0.3 N and 0.5 N as much as 250 mL and then heated using microwave irradiation at a temperature of 200 oC for 20 and 40 minutes. The liquid fraction produced by hydrolysis was analyzed by reducing sugar content with the DNS method using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The results obtained showed that the optimum hydrolysis conditions using microwave were achieved at concentrations of H2SO4 0.5 N at 200 oC and hydrolysis time at 40 minutes. Reducing sugar content of 42.71 mg / L. The sugar content rises by 19.95% compared to the hydrolysis time of 20 minutes.
