Abstract

The writing of the Student Creativity Program (SCP) titles has its appeal and uniqueness. One of which can be seen in the process of forming words in the form of acronyms. This article aims to describe the process and results of the formation of acronyms on the writing of SCP titles funded in 2018. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. This research data are in the form of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences in the SCP titles. The source of research data is the SCP titles from 5 fields in 2018. Data collection uses observation and note-taking techniques. The method of data analysis is the constituent analysis method and its expansion techniques, namely techniques of removing, inserting, replacing, and expanding. The data validity test uses theory triangulation. The results show that the formation of acronyms produced five forms of acronyms on the writing of the SCP titles, namely acronyms derived from two words, three words, four words, five words, and more than five words. Three acronym formation processes are found, namely using the initial letters of words, using syllables or fragments of words, and using mixes of initial letters of words and syllables or fragments of words.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the relationship of intertextuality between the titles of the Student Creativity Program (SCP) with film genres. This research is in the form of qualitative descriptive research that is naturalistic in character. The data source used in this study originates from 5 fields of SCP funded in 2018. Data collection is performed in the form of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences through document study. Observation and note-taking techniques are utilized to collect data. The method of data analysis uses translational identity, referential identity, and abductive inferences. The referential identity method is used to identify the relationship of intertextuality in the writing of the SCP titles and film genres. An intertextual study is carried out comprehensively, by finding similarities and differences between the two. Furthermore, the abductive inferences method is utilized to draw conclusions. The data validity test uses theory triangulation. Based on data analysis, it can be concluded that the relationship of intertextuality contained in the SCP titles involves three film genres: (1) animation; (2) drama; and (3) horror. The results of this study indicate that the use of film genres of animation and drama genres as reference texts has high appeal in the writing of the titles of SCP

Abstract

The aim of this study is expected to find whether the word critical frequently modifies COVID-19 or HIV, and are the type of critical strategies that frequently appear on the corpora.COVID-19 becomes the outbreak issue which is considered as a big problem from everyone in the world. It spreads rapidly from human to human. COVID-19 does not repute as something trifled, because it zaps undetected person in person. Besides, the existence of HIV still becomes the specter of today’s issues. These phenomena summon everyone to conduct the research in a medical perspective or even associate the result in a linguistic perspective. To reach further expanding, mixed method or commonly is used to call as quantitative and qualitative collaboration method. The result showed the T-score of COVID-19 > P value (4.548827 > 1.658). Hence, the proof meant word critical was most significantly modified COVID-19 rather than HIV. Besides, other result represent indirect criticism as the most frequent presence of critical strategies, by the keywords ‘coronavirus may’ displayed 137 (0.49 per million) tokens, ‘ coronavirus is quite’ displayed 3 (0.01 per million) tokens, and ‘coronavirus probably’ displayed 8 (0.03 per million) tokens. Keywords: Corpus-Based Analysis, Critical Strategies, COVID-19

Abstract

The ongoing el-æl merger in Australian English has been informally recognized by Australians especially those who have experience of contact with Victorians. This study aims to investigate the correlation of speakers’ sex and origin with their /el/ production and how speech styles influence their production. Two male speakers of Australian English from Victoria and South Australia were recorded while reading texts, doing interviews, and having casual conversations. The recordings were then transcribed and analyzed by using various software to describe their /el/ productions. The result of this study was both male subjects are able to produce considerable variations in their /el/ productions. The production of the Victorian male speaker confirmed the findings of previous studies while the SA male speaker showed variations of /el/ similar to back vowels. Speech styles do not significantly affect the variations of /el/ production. The ongoing merger of el-æl in Australian English might be spreading from Victoria through diffusion to its neighboring states. However, more studies should be conducted in order to confirm this suspicion. Other suggestions include customized reading passages and better semi-structured interviews.

Abstract

Abstract This study discusses the collocation of the words 'social distancing' and 'physical distancing'. Both of these phrases are new words that emerge during the current condition of COVID-19, which has a general definition of interference to prevent transmission of COVID-19 to become more widespread. 'Social distancing' and 'physical distancing', based on the frequency of the use of these two words, were identified as the significant collocates in reference to the frequency of word tokens. This study proves the collocation of negative and positive meanings of the words 'social distancing' and 'physical distancing'. This study uses qualitative methods with data sources using Corpora COVID-19 on the sketch engine, through the corpus approach. To find the collocation of the two phrases, a lot of COVID-19 journals were searched. The results of the analysis are the word tokens from the collocation of words that follow the phrase 'social distancing' as many as 2,678 (9.54 per million) words. Meanwhile, the collocation of the phrase 'physical distancing' shows results of 51 (0.18 per million) words. This shows that usage in COVID-19 data journals in the sketch engine is more in the phrase 'social distancing' than 'physical distancing'. Based on the semantic prosody collocation, words that follow ‘social distancing’ tend to be collocated (positive and negative), then this results in neutral. Meanwhile, words that follow ‘physical distancing’ have a positive tendency. Keywords: collocation, physical distancing, semantic prosody, social distancing.

Abstract

Abstract: Increase is a neutral word that is generally perceived as a positive word, were synonymous with positive words such as rise, grow, expand. However, when resorting to dictionary definitions, increase has been found to possess negative words such as 'increase the violence'. This study investigates how 'increase', generally often categorized with positive words, interacts with neighboring words to achieve particular meanings and how particular forms of several words can change a word to negative, positive and neutral connotation. This study is analyzed on a descriptive qualitative research design because corpus linguistic research needs to be interpreted more with qualitative considerations. The data are collected using a corpus-based approach, Covid-19 corpora, and the data analysis using semantic prosody based on Stubbs's (1998) theory. The result of the data showed that word increase in Covid-19 corpora have negative meaning if it is collocated with several word such as risk, rate, levels, number, significantly and associated and followed by negative word but it will have positive meaning if it is located with word expression.

In their early presence that immigrants used English (Eng) and Indonesia language (IL) formally to communicate with IOM staff, UNHCR staff, among immigrants, teachers and social workers, but when they have access to live longer in Makassar, they interact with Makassar people freely and they use various languages such as Makassar language (ML), Indonesian language by Makassar Malay language (MML) dialect known as trade Malay language, or sometimes used English as their language code choice.
