Abstract

Public space is not only a physical domain but also a cultural and social representation of collective urbanism, particularly in kampungs in Indonesia. It has grown densely due to the increasing of population and urbanisation, which has reduced the number of public spaces. This study is to investigate how public spaces in coastal kampung create function in everyday life and what social meanings for residents to attach them and how these spaces contribute to resilience, particularly fishing-based community in Pulau Pasaran, Bandar Lampung, Indonesia. This research employs a qualitative approach descriptively through collecting data by spatial observation and mapping public spaces practices identifying the characteristics of public spaces. The results are that public spaces in Pulau Pasaran are not defined by formal design but by everyday urbanism through everyday human practices. The characteristics are relational, multifunctional and adaptive to environmental change in a scarcity of public spaces. They help together to build living infrastructure for resilience to repurpose every inch of space for social or economic use.

Abstract

Urban sprawl is commonly examined as inefficient physical expansion from city centers to suburban area. This pattern-oriented view often overlooks the long-term socio-spatial processes through which suburban public spaces adapt, negotiate, and become hybrid. The gap of urban sprawl studies has been dominated by spatial map analysis and the short-term causes and impacts of the phenomenon. The novelty in this study focuses on the integration of five aspects of Stan's hybrid space: coexistence, transfusion, interconnection, ambivalence, and heterogeneity as a long-term, strengthened by Carr et al.'s approach as public-space quality dimensions responsive, democratic, meaningful, and accessible space. A qualitative case study approach was employed through purposive sampling involving five participants, consisting of community leaders, community-organization members, housing-estate representatives, the developer, and the Sub-District government. Supported by in-depth interviews, field observations, and visual documentation. The findings show that public spaces in Darmo Permai operate as hybrid spaces with different levels of interaction between housing-estate residents and kampung residents. Punden Barongan Watu is the most dominant hybrid space, while the cemetery area, Sub-District Office, and Residential Park show specific but stronger interaction patterns. This study contributes to urban sprawl and public space studies by positioning public space quality as an indicator of socio-spatial resilience and negotiated coexistence in suburban transformation.

Abstract

Rapid population growth and urbanization, combined with the large number of tourists visiting Bandung city, have led to a high demand for fruits and vegetables. This encourages the importance of developing an Urban Farming Center to increase food security, reduce carbon footprints, and raise awareness of environmental problems. The design of this urban farming center aims to explore the implementation of urban farming programs and provide integrated facilities that support the dissemination of urban farming practices and knowledge to the wider community—particularly in Bandung—while also contributing to the city's goal of becoming a sustainable city. The study method is a qualitative approach involving field observations and in-depth interviews at various urban farming sites, a literature review, and a studio-based design. The Urban Farming Center design process involves creative thinking in combining environmentally friendly building designs with sustainable agriculture. The theme applied to the building’s design is “Go Green Living”, while the concept is “Sustainable architecture”. The application of green building variables involves various aspects, such as the use of renewable energy sources, optimizing natural air circulation, the use of green roofs, and environmentally friendly agricultural technologies such as hydroponics, aquaponics, and efficient water management with rainwater harvesting. The design of the Urban Farming Center provides facilities such as agriculture and fisheries, education, public facilities, management facilities, service areas, and parking. This research contributes to sustainable city discourse through design solutions in enhancing urban food security, mitigating the urban heat island effect, improving energy efficiency, reducing carbon footprints, and fostering community education and participation in urban farming initiatives.
