Abstract

The purpose of this research is to observe the content of nutrient and steroid of some deep sea fish from western Sumatera of the IndianOcean. A number of 11 fish species was examired in this work.

Abstract

Albacore (Thunnus alalunga, Bonnaterre, 1788) is one of the tropical tuna species in the Eastern Indian Ocean incidentally caught by the Indonesian tuna longliner. Scientific observer series data during the period of 2005 – 2012 showed that the catches were geographically distributed within the area bordered by 5 – 350 S and 75 – 1300 E. High CPUE mainly occurred in sub area between 250 and 350 S. Some biological observations indicated that immature albacore specimens were mainly recorded in areas of south of 250 S while mature albacore were concentrated in the area between 100 S and 250 S. Length – weight measurements for pooled male and female was W= 0.00008FL2.7271. The hook-rates from onboard observation showed that increasing rates occurred during 2009 to 2012. The annual landing showed that that highest occurred in 2008 and the lowest in 2011 with overall tend to decrease until 2011 and increased slightly in 2012. Series number of length frequency measurements (2005 - 2012) showed that the albacore were caught within the range of 40 – 135 cm FL and there was a tendency that the average size decreased gradually from 103 cmFL (2005) to 84 cmFL (2012). As a preliminary finding these estimates contribute as important element for consideration in the national and regional tuna fisheries management in the area.

Abstract

Study on the population parameters of endeavour shrimp (Metapenaeus ensls de hlaan) was conducted in Balikpapan waters, East Kalimantan. Population parameters of the endeavour shrimp were calculated based on data collected during period of survey, March 2006-November 2006.

Abstract

Any fish on swept area of bottom trawl could not be caught due to some technical factors during towing. However, it could be estimated by integrated of bottom trawl and acoustic survey. This paper describes the determination of some factors that affect the performance of trawl net during the bottom trawl survey in the waters of Tarakan. Surveys were carried out in May, August, and November 2012. A total of 57 stations of simultaneously acoustic-trawl were completed. Data collected from each station include catch composition, and variables of trawling operation (i.e. bottom depth, warp length, trawl door opening, towing speed, towing duration, and acoustic fish density). Principal component analysis was applied to identify variables might impact of trawling performance (i.e. fish density at the waters area, towing speed, towing duration, warp length, horizontal opening of trawl door, density of non-demersal at cod end, and bottom depth). Both towing speed and towing duration were not major component for trawl operation. According to test of significance for four variables (i.e. bottom depth, warp length, horizontal opening, biota non-demersal at cod end) which affected to fish density at waters area, that both of variable (i.e. warp length and bottom depth) were significant as the principal components for the performance of bottom trawl.

Abstract

The current study highlighted the relationship between the number of ALB catch, swimming layer and sub-surface oceanographic variables (temperature, dissolved oxygen, salinity, nitrate, phosphate and silicate) in Eastern Indian Ocean. This data used in this study were based on the Research Institute for Tuna Fisheries (RITF) observer program in Benoa from 2010-2013. This paper presents the information about vertical distribution of Albacore and its relations to sub surface oceanographic variables (SSOV). Results show that the optimum catch of albacore occurred at depth of 118 to 291 m with the average temperature between       12.41-20.47 °C, dissolved oxygen 3.24-4.68 ml/l , salinity 34.78-35.01 psu, nitrate 6.78-17.50 µ mol/l, phosphate 0.62-1.27 µ mol/l and  silicate 10.06-24.77 µ mol/l. The highest catches of albacore are mostly at depth of 156 m (hook number 2 and 11) with the average temperature 18.71°C, dissolved oxygen 4.68 ml/l, salinity 34.78 psu, nitrate 10.71 µ mol/l, phosphate 0.86 µ mol/l and silicate 15.95 µ mol/l. The highest influence of swimming layer and sub-surface oceanographic variable to the number of ALB catch contained at depth of 291 m of albacore swimming layer with coefficient correlation ( r ) 0.934 and determination coefficient ( R2) 0.872.  The lowest influence of  swimming layer and sub-surface oceanographic variable to the number of ALB catch  contained at depth of 156 m of albacore swimming layer with coefficient correlation ( r ) 0.528 and determination coefficient   ( R2) 0,279. The relationship between swimming layer and sub-surface oceanographic variable on catch of  ALB tuna was low (<0.500).

Abstract

Incidental by-catch and associated discarding are difficult to estimate on the basis of logbook information because they are poorly reported by fishing masters and their importance varies with several interrelated factors. The purpose of this paper is to inform the commonly discarded fishes of the Indonesian tuna longline fishery in the Indian Ocean. The study was carried out during 2010 – 2011 following six commercial tuna longline vessels based in Port of Benoa. Discards composition was dominated by longnose lancetfish and pelagic stingrays which composed almost half of total discards. Almost half of total catch are discards and half of discards are disposed dead or dying.

Abstract

Although the giant featherback Chitala lopis is an important fish in Kampar River, the population structure has not been investigated. In this study, genetic diversity and population structure of giant featherback were examined using nucleotide sequence analysis of mitochondrial DNA control region for 54 fish collected from Kampar River.

Abstract

Tuna fish are highly migratory species. Clarifying their stock structures and migration patterns is important for tuna fisheries management. The purpose of this research was to examine the parasites of bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) and yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) to determine which parasites may be potential stock markers for assessment of tuna migration patterns. Bigeye tuna and yellowfin tuna were collected (measured between 28-48 cm fork length) from 9 sites across Indonesia and from 2 ‘outlier sites’ (The Maldives and Solomon Islands). Organs including gills (filaments and branchial arches), stomach wall, liver, pyloric caeca, and intestines were examined. Seven types of didymozoids were distinguished including 3 Didymosulcus spp., 4 Kollikeria spp. and one acanthocephalan (Bolbosoma sp.). The results suggest these fish parasites are potentially useful markers for assessment of tuna migration pattern, contributing information needed for fisheries management in Indonesia.
