Abstract

Social scientists have conceptualized several stages of sociocultural transformation as societal development. One version modified in this article constitutes a typology of preindustrial and industrial societies which consists of one, hunting & gathering societies; two, pastoral societies; three, village agrarian societies; four, advanced traditional agrarian societies; and five, industrial societies; and six, postindustrial societies. To analyse the sociocultural transformation which happens in the Indonesian society, one has to observe and consider the long historical background which produces social heterogeneity. Thus, the direction and ideals of sociocultural transformation can be identified and conceptualized.

Abstract

At present the portrait of land use in several cities is dominated by settlements or dwellings. Settlements in tropical climates have the potential to support the environment for thriving plants. Therefore, research that is oriented to optimizing the tropical climate in the settlement sector is very important because in the science of architecture designing buildings is very necessary to consider the harmony of buildings, climate and humans. The culture of Indonesian society from generation to generation is a tradition that needs to get space side by side with the fulfillment of residential needs. Gardening culture is an effort to meet food needs, while living culture is an effort to meet the needs of the board, so that both are primary human needs. The research objective is to study the prospect of the assimilation of the culture of gardening and living through quantitative and qualitative paradigms. The focus of the study determined the relationship between the two variables with statistical analysis through the correlation of people's appreciation of gardening activities with income level, in the statistical test analysis using the chi square method. The results of the quantitative analysis continued with efforts to find reasons for causal relationships through in-depth interviews. The results of the study concluded that there was a correlation between the appreciation of the community and the level of income in supporting the assimilation of the culture of gardening and living in tropical homes. The problem of limited land is the cause of the lack of assimilation of the culture of gardening and living in low-income communities.

Abstract

The discussion in the article "Religious Fundamentalism" has a background in the development of the global cultural situation in the 20th and 21st centuries which shows an atmosphere of "tension" due to the encounter of religion with modern culture and secularity. Religion seemed to feel threatened by modernity so that it carried out self-defense and simultaneously resisted. As a result of being confined to tension that is actually "self-created", according to Eller, religious fundamentalism appears with a ferocious, vindictive and sometimes violent character. This kind of character is increasingly entrenched for those who have similar emotions, attitudes, and puritanical religious orientations. The main message Eller conveyed is that religious fundamentalism is not a single and stand-alone phenomenon, but is interrelated with other cultural factors with high complexity.

Abstract

Translation is process of transferring text from source language (SL) into target language (TL).  The process can be challenging when there are no translation found on the TL as a result of different politics, economy, social, cultural, historical and religious backgrounds. A text containing folklore is one of the difficult texts to be translated as it contains legend, tradition, art or folktale. When untranslability happens, Venuti (2000: 427) suggests translator to use the original text by adding footnote or glossary. To avoid a shift in translation, Vinay and Dalbernet (1958) suggests two translation methods namely direct translation along with three translation techniques, these are Calque, and literal translation and oblique methods along with four translation techniques named transposition, modulation, equivalence or reformulation, and adaptation. This research applies those model, methods and techniques of translation along with folklore research method from Dundes (2007) to promote tourism at Pekalongan Regency area.

Abstract

Indonesia is a disaster-prone country, therefore efforts for Disaster Risk Reduction are very useful to do.This paper aims to examine the cultural and religious roles of settlement in areas affected by the Lapindo mudflow disaster in Sidoarjo. The method used in this study is the study of relevant literature from research that has been done before. From the results of the literature review, it was concluded that culture and religion became capital for the people who were maintained even though their settlements were now scattered. Culture and religion also become identities which are very influential factors for the resilience of settlements which up to now still have vulnerability, so that anticipation and adaptation need to be carried out as preparedness for possible future disasters.
