As one genres of literature, poetry has poetic values that bring meaning, music, and emotion on its words. Symbols as one of the poetic values are usually used as the central to the way our minds and words function. Moreover, symbolic meaning involves the developments of students’ critical thinking and linguistic skills. The objectives of the research are; 1) to know the kinds of symbolic meaning and 2) to know the dominant symbolic meaning found in Robert Frost’s Poems “A Boy’s Will”. This research deals with semantic approach. It belongs to qualitative research and descriptive qualitative as research design. The method of collecting data is closed reading and documentation. The writer analyze the symbolic meaning using the theory by Timpane and Watts (2001) that has three parts; “A” referred to the symbol itself; “B” is what the symbol stand for; and “C” is the meaning of the symbol. Furthermore, the writer also used Shamisa’s theory (2004) to classify kinds of symbolic meaning. This theory has two kinds of symbolic meanings, arbitrary symbol and personal symbol. The result of the research reveals that the total number of symbolic meaning is 30 data. They consist of 6 arbitrary symbols or 20% of total findings and 24 personal symbols or 80% of total findings. Thus, the dominant symbolic meaning found in Robert Frost’s poems “A Boy’s Will” is personal symbols. The implication of this research is to improve students’ understanding on poems and help them to grasp the entire contexts of the poem.

This paper discusses how a teacher can encourage the students in learning English which is difficult for some of them. The author found a new way to teach descriptive text that was called BOSARANG (kind of puzzle of arranging people’s body). The purpose of this study is to prove that the use of BOSARANG can increase students’ creativity in making descriptive text especially describing people. This paper uses quasi experimental research which uses pre-test and post-test to compare the result. Based on the research, the result shows that BOSARANG has been proven that it totally increases students’ creativity.

Reading is one of the receptive skills. The goal of reading skill is comprehension. Unfortunately, the tenth graders of SMA N 1 Kota Mungkid in the academic year 2017/2018 still got difficulty in comprehending written text. This condition happened because the students have low motivation and the variation of the teaching media. There are two objectives of this research. First, it is to know how great can the use of Anchor Chart Media increase the learning motivation of narrative text reading comprehension of the tenth graders of SMA Negeri 1 Kota Mungkid in the academic year 2017/2018. Second, it is to know how great the improvement of the narrative text reading comprehension of the tenth graders students of SMA N 1 Kota Mungkid in the academic year 2017/2018 who are taught by using anchor chart media. The writer collected the data by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was the class of X IPA 2 of SMA Negeri 1 Kota Mungkid in the academic year 2017/2018. The writer finds that the use of Anchor Chart Media can increase the student’s learning motivation. The observation and questionnaire results indicate the students have high motivation in English learning process. Based on the above results, the writer concludes that the use of Anchor Chart Media can increase the learning motivation narrative text reading comprehension of the tenth graders of SMA Negeri 1 Kota Mungkid in the academic year 2017/2018. The writer suggests both the teachers and the students to use Anchor Chart Media as an alternative in teaching and learning.

This paper focuses on identifying the type and most dominant cognitive domain reflected in textbook and aims to know the type and find out the most dominant cognitive domain. The type of this paper is qualitative research and the research design is descriptive qualitative. The subject is English textbook for five graders of elementary school entitled “English Year 5” which is published by Malaysia ministry of education with KSSR (Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Rendah) year 5 as the curriculum. The researcher analyzed the instructional activities based on the revised Bloom’s taxonomy by Anderson (2001). The result reveals that the total number of the instructional activities is 235. The type of cognitive domain is creating with 71, understanding is 55,  remembering shows 41, applying shows 34, analyzing shows 20 and the last domain is evaluating that has 14.    Writing is one of the four skills in English which should be mastered by students of senior high school. However, students in the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Magelang find difficulties in writing hortatory text. It is proved from the average score of writing skill (71) which does not reach the standard minimum score for English yet which is 78. Students’ difficulties in learning writing are because of many factors. One of them is teaching technique. Therefore, the writer conducted a study to overcome the problem by applying Ripple Technique. There are two main objectives in this study. The first is to know whether the use of Ripple Technique can increase the students’ hortatory text learning motivation. The second is to know how great the improvement of the students hortatory text writing skill after being taught by using Ripple Technique. The writer conducted a classroom action research (CAR). It was divided into Pre-Cycle, Cycle I, and Cycle II. Furthermore, the writer collected the data using non test (observation, questionnaire, and documentation) and test. The writer selected the eleventh graders of SMA Negeri 1 Magelang, XI IPA 6 as subject of the study. There are 24 students in the class which consists of 15 females and 9 males.Based on the result, there was an improvement of students’ learning motivation in writing hortatory text. The writer’s observation and questionnaire showed that most of the students had behavioral change. It was proved from the result of the writer’s observation and questionnaire that increased. Beside, the improvement also showed from the test results. In Pre-Cycle test, the average score test was 71.96 which belong to good category. In Cycle I test, the average score was 78.63 which belong to good category while In Cycle II test, the average score was 82.17 which belong to good category. The improvement from Pre-Cycle test to Cycle II was 10.21 points. The writer concluded that the Ripple Technique could increase the hortatory text students’ learning motivation. In addition, it also improved the hortatory text writing skill of the eleventh graders of SMA Negeri 1 Magelang in the school year 2017/2018. In brief, this technique help the students to build a background knowledge about the topic which they write in their text and gain more information to be developed. This technique is also interesting for the students to be more active in the learning process.

Communication is important for people in society. Pragmatics offers Grice’s cooperative principle to make the conversational contribution such as is required, context based acceptable, and accepted purpose of the talk. Violation on Grice’s maxims can cause misunderstanding which makes conversation fail. It also happens on the dialogue of drama, which is a representation of human’s communication. The subjectives of this research are to know kinds of maxims violation and the dominant maxim violation found on the dialogue of “The Wild Duck” by Henrik Ibsen are. This research belongs to descriptive qualitative research. Furthermore, the technique of collecting data is documentation where the script of drama “The Wild Duck” by Henrik Ibsen as the basic data to be analized in term of violation of Grice’s cooperative principle. Then, to analyze the data, the writer uses Krippendorff (2004) content analysis. The result of this research shows there are 51 (100%) maxim violations. They are divided into 16 (31.37% ) violations of quantity maxim, 12 (23.53% ) violations of quality maxim, 12 (23.53%) violations of relation maxim, and 11 (21.57%) violation of manner maxim. Moreover, the dominant violation is quantity maxim with 16 (31.37%) violations of total findings.

In Indonesia, English language teaching concerns with text or genre. Consequently, systemic functional linguistics is important to apply in writing a text. However, students have difficulties of grammar, vocabulary, and how to construct word into syntactical construction. Students only concern with how to compose a text however it contains meaningless clauses. The writer is interested to choose a problem of constructing clause complex as source of the research. The objectives of this research are to identify the kinds of logico-semantic relation and to analyze the logico-semantic relation of clauses mostly used in analytical exposition written by the third semester students of Tidar University in the academic year 2017/2018.This study applies descriptive qualitative research which consists of detail description and explanation of logico-semantic relation of clauses in students’ writing. In conducting this research, the writer collected the documentation of students’ writing about analytical exposition. The data were analyzed by classifying the clauses and identifying kinds of logico-semantic relation proposed by Halliday and Matthiessen (2014).Based on data analysis, it can be concluded that the analytical exposition texts analyzed in this research contain more logico-semantic relation of clauses such as expansion (elaboration, extension and enhancement) and projection (locution). It is noticed that expansion of enhancement is mostly used in the texts with 31 times or 41.89% of total occurrance and although the texts still need improvement in making a clause complex.
