Speaking is one of the four language skills that is used to express ideas and feelings. The students’ speaking skill of the eleventh graders of MAN 1 Kota Magelang has not achieved the learning target. The objectives of the study are to know how high the use of Dot Voting technique can increase students’ learning motivation in the report text speaking of the eleventh grades of MAN 1 Kota Magelang and to know how great the improvement of the students speaking skill who are taught using Dot Voting technique at the eleventh grades of MAN 1 Kota Magelang is. The type of this research is classroom action research. The subject of the research was class XI-Religion 1 of MAN 1 Kota Magelang. The writer used test and non-test instruments (observation, questionnaire, and documentation) to collect the data. Each cycle consists of planning, observing, acting, and reflecting. In analyzing the data, the writer used quantitative and qualitative data. Based on the writer’s observation and questionnaire, there is some increase of the students’ behavior change after the writer taught using Dot Voting technique in speaking class.

Communication is a way to deliver information to the hearer. In teaching and learning process, communication has an essential role. The success of communication depends on the participants involve. In this circumstance the participants are teacher and students. Teacher‟s talk has a major influence to the students. The utterance that is produced by the teacher is very influential on students‟ understanding when the teacher delivers the material to the learners. What the teacher utters affects the students. The objectives of this research are to analyze the effects of perlocutionary acts and to find the dominant effects of perlocutionary acts that are found in teacher‟s talk by English teacher in delivering material. The subject of this research is English teacher‟s talk of SMA Negeri 4 Magelang, focus on sentence that is produced by the teacher. In conducted the research the writer recorded the teacher‟s talk during teaching and learning process. Furthermore, the writer transcribed the data and analyzed the data to find the effects of perlocutionary acts found in teacher‟s talk. Based on the result analysis, the writer found that there are 11 effects of perlocutionary acts used by the teacher. The writer concluded that the dominant effects of perlocutionary acts are hearer thinks of something, hearer does something and hearer gives answer. Those three effects are related each other. It shows the pattern of communication in teaching and learning process.

Reading is a must in language learning. In Senior High School, it is not an exception. The main problem is that the students are not interested in doing the reading task. They also have low motivation. It is caused by the monotonous way of teaching. There are two objectives of this research. They are to know whether the use of bookmark technique can increase the learning motivation in the recount text reading and to know how great the improvement of the recount text reading skill of the students who are taught using bookmark technique is. The writer conducted a Classroom Action Research (CAR). It was divided into three phases, pre-cycle, cycle I and cycle II. The writer took the tenth graders of MAN Parakan Temanggung as the subject of the research. The techniques used to collect the data were tests and non-test technique. The writer used the average score and percentage in each cycle to analyze the data. The result of the tests shows that the mean score of the students increase.

Writing skill in Malaysia is one of the language learning objectives which has to be mastered by the students. It is challenge as it is evolving to meet the needs and demands in globalized world. In writing, students are expected to be able to make good construction of paragraph. The problems arise in Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Bandar Sungai Buaya Malaysia that the students are still get difficulty in arranging good quality of writing, especially in term of clause development. The good quality of writing are influenced by interdependency (taxis) and logico-semantic relation system between the clauses. The objectives of this research are to find out the types of taxis and logico-semantic relation in students’ descriptive text. Besides, it also identifies the types of taxis and logico-semantic relation which are dominantly used by Malaysian first grade students of SMK Bandar Sungai Buaya Malaysia following by Gerot and Wignell’s theory (1994). This research belongs to descriptive qualitative research, since the date are provided descriptively. The products that have been analyzed are 17 descriptive texts written by 17 students of 1 Muzik class in SMK Bandar Sungai Buaya Malaysia. Furthermore, the technique of collecting data is done through documentation technique. The result shows that the student descriptive texts consist of 380 clauses which 188 of those are simple sentence, fragments and the rest is clause complexes.

English is a foreign language that connects people in the whole world. A guide has big role in tourism industry. He should be able to communicate using English because the majority of visitors to the temple are foreign tourists who speak English. The tourist do not understand the illocutionary acts performed by the guide in the form of directive, commissive, representative, expressive, or declarative. Furthermore, misunderstandings or misinterpretations occurs in the communication between the guides and the tourists. The objectives of this research are to analyze the types of illocutionary acts and to find the most dominant type that are found in guide’s utterances in delivering information. In conducting this research the writer recorded the guide’s utterances during guiding activities. The writer transcribed the data and analyzed them to find the types of illocutionary acts using Searle’s classification of illocutionary acts. The writer concluded that there are 5 types of illocutionary acts in the local guide’s utterances, they are directives, commissive, representative, expressive and declarative.

Language testing is a kind of process to measure the competence or the achievement of the students in language, in this case English. Creating a set of test is not as simple as it seems; there must be many qualifications or requirements to consider to make a good test with good quality for the students. The objectives of this research are to know whether the English summative test for the tenth graders of SMA Negeri 1 Magelang in the school year 2015/2016 has good validity and represent the basic competence proportionally or not. The writer conducted the research by collecting the data. The writer took the question sheet of English first semester test as the subject of this study. The writer also took the English syllabus to analyze the test items. Then, the writer retyped the data and compared it with the syllabus. After that, the writer analyzed the test items one by one. Besides, the writer also counted the percentage of the conformity and unconformity of the test items to know the quality of the content validity of the test items. After analyzing the data, the writer finds that there are thirty-two items which conform to the syllabus and three items do not conform to the syllabus. Meaning that the English summative test has good content validity with the percentage 91.42%. But the representation of the basic competences do not proportional yet, because there is a basic competence which dominated the test items.

This study investigates translation method used in student’s translation of English Phrasal Verbs on news item text into Indonesian of third semester students of Tidar. Translation becomes one of the subjects that have to be improved by the third semester students. The students face difficulties due to English and Bahasa Indonesia have differences in some of linguistic aspect and also background knowledge. It was seen when the students translate phrasal verb that commonly used in news item text. The students did not know the appropriate method used to help them translate phrasal verb easily. The objectives of this research are to know translation method used and to know the translation method mostly used in help students translating English phrasal verbs on news item texts. This study applies1` descriptive qualitative research which consists of an explanation of translation method used in translating Phrasal Verbs. The data were collected by note taking in the form of sentences. The results of this research show that there are 67 phrasal verbs in 23 news item text translated by the students. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the phrasal verb in this news item texts mostly translated with Faithful Translation Method. However, the students could use Communicative Translation Method and Free Translation method to help them easily translate phrasal verb, it is still understandable and the massage successfully delivered. However, using literal translation method is not appropriate to translated phrasal verb, the meaning always out of context because literal translation method used as a pre-translation process.

This study investigates cohesive devices in analytical exposition text written by the eleventh graders of SMA N 1 Magelang in the school year 2016/2017. The objectives of this research are to know cohesive devices used and to know the type of cohesive devices mostly used in analytical exposition texts written by eleventh graders of SMA N 1 Magelang in the school year 2016/2017. This study applies descriptive qualitative research which consists of a detail linguistic description and explanation of cohesive devices in students‟ writing. The data were collected by note taking in the form of sentences. From the findings, it can be concluded that the analytical exposition texts analyzed in this research contain more grammatical cohesion rather than lexical cohesion. It is noticed that reference is mostly used in the texts and although the texts are somewhat cohesive, some parts still need improvement.

Writing is considered important for the high school students. However, the X MIA 6 Peminatan students of SMA Negeri 1 Magelang still find difficulty in writing the recount text. There are two objectives of the study in this research. The first is to know whether the use of Biopoem technique can increase the recount text writing learning motivation of the tenth graders of SMA Negeri 1 Magelang in the school year 2015/2016. The second is to know how great the improvement of the recount text writing skill of the tenth graders of SMA Negeri 1 Magelang in the school year 2015/2016 who are taught using Biopoem is. The writer conducted a classroom action research.To collect the data, the writer uses non-test (observation, questionnaire, documentation) technique and test technique. The data are analyzed using qualitative and quantitative data analysis technique. Based on the writer’s observation and questionnaire, it shows that there are some changes in the students’ learning motivation after the writer taught using Biopoem technique. There are also improvement of the test mean scores. Based on the description above, the writer concludes that the use of Biopoem technique can increase the students’ recount text writing learning motivation and there is a significant improvement of the recount text writing skill after they were taught using Biopoem technique.

Housekeeping is brand new material that the students have never had before. The language that is used to deliver the material is English, but it is English for Specific Purpose which designed to meet specific needs of the learners. So, there are a lot of new terms that the students hear for the first time. Moreover, the students have different capability in acquiring the material. The students sometimes cannot understand the material and it leads to a boring classroom situation. Besides, the students’ lack of vocabulary and the teacher still finds difficulties in choosing the right words to explain the materials. In this case, switching language used in classroom with the language that the students easily understand helps a lot. Code switching has various types and functions, and they are very useful. The objectives of the study are to know what types and functions of code switching used by the housekeeping teacher’s talks of “Ilham Cruise Ship Training Center Magelang” batch 16. This is a descriptive qualitative research that focuses on the Housekeeping teacher’s talks as the subject. The writer deals with the documentation of the teaching learning activities which obtained on November 6th until November 22nd 2017. The data collection is started by observing, taking notes, recording, and interviewing the teacher about his purpose of using code-switching in the classroom interaction.The findings show that there are two types of code switching based on Wardhaugh’s theory (2015), namely Situational switching and Metaphorical switching. Meanwhile, there are six functions of code switching according to Sampson (2012). They are code switching as equivalence function as metalanguage function as floor holding function), as reiteration function as socializing function and as L2 avoidance function.
