Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify factors that influence adaptation and to analyze the socio-economic adaptation strategies of stilt house communities on the banks of the Kahayan River, Pahandut Seberang, Palangka Raya.This study conducted descriptive qualitative research with a case study in Pahandut Seberang. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and documentation of seven key informants, namely heads of families who had lived in the area for at least five years. The results showed that economic factors and river-dependent occupations, such as fish cages, which require physical proximity, were the main reasons for choosing stilt houses. There are three main types of adaptation used. The first is physical adaptation, which includes independent drinking water treatment and floating stilt houses; the second is economic adaptation, which includes dual livelihood strategies, such as fishing and fish cages; and the last is social adaptation, which is created by enhancing mutual cooperation and solidarity among residents to overcome infrastructure limitations and environmental impacts. Overall, stilt house communities use socio-economic adaptation strategies to demonstrate local resilience to development pressures and environmental change. These findings are crucial in helping local governments develop more equitable, inclusive, and sustainable policies for riverside communities.

Abstract

Religious-based alternative healing remains an important part of rural community life despite the increasing accessibility of modern medical services. This study aims to understand how rural communities in Madura construct the meaning of healing through treatment practices involving the kiai as a spiritual figure. A qualitative approach was employed through in-depth interviews with informants who held diverse perspectives regarding such healing practices. The findings indicate that healing is not understood solely as physical recovery, but also as the attainment of inner peace, a sense of security, and a strengthened spiritual connection through prayer and the blessings of the kiai. This practice also contributes to the preservation of tradition and the reinforcement of collectively inherited socio-cultural identity. Using the perspective of social construction, the analysis demonstrates that trust in the kiai is shaped through ongoing social processes, positioning kiai-based healing as a social reality that influences how people interpret health and life. The findings further reveal that seeking healing from the kiai functions not only as a curative effort but also as a space for negotiating religious values, local traditions, and social experiences within rural Madurese society.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how the policy of relocating street vendors to Datah Manuah Mini Market affects the social and economic conditions of the market and how consumers view the changes that have taken place. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach involving five consumer informants through in-depth interviews, observations, and document collection. The results show that the relocation of vendors has had a positive impact on the cleanliness, order, and layout of the market. However, this relocation also caused new problems, such as a decrease in the number of visitors, a less strategic market location, and a lack of facilities such as lighting. Socially, the relationship between vendors and consumers still exists, but the intensity of interaction between the two has decreased dramatically because the market feels emptier. Economically, the vendors' income has decreased significantly, affecting the continuity of their businesses. Consumer perceptions of this relocation policy vary, ranging from supporting the city's development goals to criticizing the accessibility and atmosphere of the market, which did not exist before. These findings indicate that the success of the relocation policy depends on social and economic factors and how consumers understand these changes, as explained in Max Weber's Social Action Theory

Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the impact of Small-Scale Gold Mining (SSGM) activities on the social life of the community in Pasirgombong Village. The focus of the study includes patterns of socio-economic change in the community, lifestyles, and the potential for social conflict that may arise. The research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques through direct observation and in-depth interviews with several key informants, namely active miners and community leaders. Data analysis is carried out qualitatively through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study show that Small-Scale Gold Mining (SSGM) has become a more promising alternative livelihood compared to traditional agriculture and has changed the socio-economic orientation of the community. The presence of mining activities increases income, access to education, and quality of life. Despite socio-economic shifts, communal values and social solidarity remain strong. Conflicts over land ownership and profit sharing are generally minor and are resolved through traditional mediation. Small-Scale Gold Mining (SSGM) is a social phenomenon that reshapes community relationships and structures, with communities able to adapt and manage conflicts through local norms to ensure social stability.

Abstract

Fishing is widely practised by women in Petuk Katimpun. This indicates that women have dual roles in their lives. This study aims to examine the activities of women fishing in peat swamps and analyse the roles, functions, and objectives of women as fishermen. The author argues that women fishermen have the capacity and dual roles in their livelihoods to achieve food security and support family economies. An ethnographic approach was used as the research method among women fishermen in Petuk Katimpun. Data collection was carried out through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and literature studies and analysed using descriptive analysis techniques. The findings show that women make a significant contribution to food security and the family economy. The role of women fishers is not limited to household activities. Still, it encompasses a comprehensive range of tasks, from preparing fishing gear and setting nets or traps to hauling in the catch, sorting the fish, and marketing the catch. The purpose of women working as fishermen is closely related to efforts to secure the family's future, ease the burden on their husbands, and ensure that the needs of large families are met sustainably. Women's income is significant because their husbands' income as fishermen is often uncertain, depending on weather conditions, fishing seasons, and the availability of fishery resources. Women's involvement in the fishing profession and other activities significantly improves family welfare, thereby contributing to food security and family economic resilience. The presence of women fishers is an essential pillar in developing a more inclusive, empowered, and sustainable river community.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of Islamic youth organizations in fostering religious awareness among urban adolescents, using a case study of the Islamic Youth Community (IRIC) in Pamulang Barat Subdistrict, South Tangerang City. The research focuses on analyzing the contribution of religious activities, organizational development, and socio-religious programs in shaping adolescents’ religious awareness amid the complexities of urban life. This study employs a qualitative approach using a literature review method by examining books, scholarly journal articles, policy documents, and relevant previous studies related to Islamic youth and religious awareness. The findings indicate that Islamic youth organizations play a strategic role as platforms for religious development by instilling religious values, strengthening Islamic identity, and cultivating adolescents’ religious awareness through participatory and contextual approaches. Furthermore, these organizations function as positive socialization spaces that assist adolescents in coping with the challenges of modernization and urban environmental influences. In conclusion, Islamic youth organizations contribute significantly to the development of religious awareness among urban adolescents. Therefore, this study recommends sustained support from local governments and religious institutions to strengthen Islamic youth development programs.

Abstract

The phenomenon of “gus-gus-an” reflects a significant shift in how the public interprets the identity of gus as young religious figures in the digital era. These gus no longer appear solely as successors of pesantren traditions but also as public figures who construct their image through social media, creating a paradox between their sermons on modesty and their luxurious lifestyles or controversial behaviors. This study aims to analyze how society constructs meaning around this phenomenon using Peter L. Berger's theory of social construction. The research employs a qualitative approach with digital observation, document analysis, and interviews with ten informants from diverse social backgrounds. The data were analyzed thematically and integrated with the concepts of externalization, objectivation, and internalization. The findings indicate that digital media serve as the primary arena for gus to externalize their identities. The public then engages in objectivation through moral judgments, comments, and the formation of labels such as “hedon gus” or “celebrity gus.” This process continues into internalization as society develops new expectations of religious figures based on the consistency between their words and actions. The study concludes that the identity of contemporary gus is a socially negotiated construction shaped by personal expression, mediatization, and public moral perception. This phenomenon illustrates a shifting landscape of religious authority within digital culture.

Abstract

This article examines the experiences and forms of resistance among professional women facing gender bias in the workplace, focusing on three key professions: journalists, teachers, and public bureaucrats. Although these fields are commonly perceived as domains of professionalism, women within them continue to encounter subtle symbolic and structural barriers in the form of subtle gender bias. Employing a qualitative approach and in-depth interviews with nine female informants across the three professions, this study analyzes how resistance is constructed symbolically, narratively, and collectively. The findings reveal that professional women’s resistance often takes non-confrontational yet effective forms, such as role negotiation, solidarity alliances, and efforts to construct self-images as rational and competent actors. This article contributes to gender sociology discourse by highlighting the dynamics of bias that are not always explicit yet remain detrimental to women. It also underscores the necessity of gender-sensitive institutional reforms to ensure that professionalism no longer functions as a space for reproducing inequality.

Abstract

The goat head planting ritual is the core of the Hajat Bumi tradition, which is regularly celebrated by the community of Pondok Ranggon, Cipayung, East Jakarta. This tradition has been preserved as a manifestation of syncretism between local beliefs and Islamic religious practices, making it a contrasting object of study in an urban environment. This study aims to explore the symbolic meaning of the goat's head as a symbolic system and to understand how this ritual functions in constructing the cosmic order and collective motivation of the community. Using a qualitative-interpretive research method based on Clifford Geertz's theory of religion as a symbolic system and thick description techniques, data was collected through interviews and documentation studies. The findings show that the goat head is a dense symbol that formulates the cosmic order of sacrifice, warding off evil, and moral purification from animalistic nature. This symbol successfully creates a mood of calm and persistent motivation among residents to preserve tradition. Culturally, this ritual represents the harmonization of Islamic teachings with ancestral traditions, which ultimately affirms the unique socio-cultural identity of the Kramat Ganceng community amid modernization. This study contributes to the study of the sociology of religion through an interpretive understanding of how ritual symbols function in the cultural life of urban communities. These findings have implications for strengthening our understanding of strategies for preserving local culture in urban environments.
