Abstract

This article aims to analyze the problems of establishing worship places in Indonesia and the potential for the development of religious harmony. The previous study explained that the issue of establishing places of worship in Indonesia had been accommodated in the Joint Regulation of the Minister of Religion and the Minister of Home Affairs (PBM) Number 9 and 8 of 2006 concerning the maintenance of religious harmony, empowerment of spiritual harmony forums, and the establishment of houses of worship. Researchers collected data through interviews and document studies of various cases related to conflicts over places of worship in Indonesia. This study uses a conceptual approach to developing the essential elements of sociology and the Strengths Weakness Opportunity Problem Action (SWOPA) analysis method to analyze the root causes and develop alternative policies to improve conflicts over the construction of places of worship in Indonesia. This study indicates that regulations regarding the establishment of houses of worship are used as a means of dialogue and become a legitimation to complicate and exclude the process of establishing houses of worship for minorities from various religions. In addition, the structural, cultural, and processual aspects that exist in the community are essential to be managed to minimize the occurrence of conflict. Stakeholders can also consider this analysis to build inclusive inter-religious relations.

Abstract

This article discusses how the dynamics of the abstentions phenomenon among pro-democracy activists in the 2014-2019 general election in Indonesia. While pro-democracy activists have increasingly chosen “struggle within”, there are still critical groups that have voted for abstentions in 2014-2019 general election. Charles Tilly’s concept of collective action and contentious politics is used in this study. This study uses a qualitative approach to the type of case study research. Researchers explore data through in-depth interviews as primary data and secondary data is extracted through library research. The analysis is carried out with the abstractive inductive logic. This research shows that abstentions are contentious collective actions. The abstentions movement was born from a network of pro-democracy activists who have been engaged in advocacy work. Abstentions carried out in protest against the authorities and the boycott of the election. The boycott choice is contentious politics.

Abstract

This article aims to map out the conflict over the establishment of GKI Yasmin Church in Bogor, which has occurred since 2006, by looking at the dialectic relations among its sociological dimensions. The Structuration theory of Anthony Giddens is utilized to analyze relationships between structure and agency. However, previous studies have also pointed out that cultural aspects cast a wide influence on this conflict. As such, this paper also uses Paulus Wirutomo’s triadic conception of Structure, Process, and Culture, in which the latter will be explained in-depth to outline the role of cultural hegemony in reproducing the Structure of GKI Yasmin’s conflict. Our study found that structural dimensions, as the result of pragmatic calculations of state actors, resulted in the exclusion of the GKI Yasmin group. Cultural pressure, too, increasingly complicates the efforts of religious minorities to challenge this domination as it also proliferates intolerant culture. Finally, the processual dimension comprises the relations among actors with competing interests, in which masses can (re)negotiate and reproduce structural relations. The novelty of this study lies in the dialectical and holistic conflict-mapping to demonstrate how power relations work through structural, processual, and cultural dimensions. Meanwhile, previous studies have only focused on the role of the government, intolerant culture, and socio-political dimensions in the conflict of GKI Yasmin in particular, and the establishment of places of worship in general.

Abstract

The topic of tolerance is still a major topic of discussion in Indonesia. This happens because of the strengthening of identity politics, which results in social division. This research aims to examine and analyze the tolerance of Islam and Hinduism. This paper also looks at the phenomenon of tolerance using Giddens’ concept of structuration. This research method used a qualitative approach by using in-depth interviews, observations, and literature studies to explore information related to this research topic. The findings of this research show the institutionalized social structure of the Glanggang community’s local wisdom values, which social structure shapes the tolerant behavior of the community. Javanese cultural values and the spirit of tolerance in the religious values guide the community to coexist. The collective experience is recorded in social activities and religious activities. The structure allows agents to develop an inclusive spirit of life. Formal and informal agents play an important role in shaping tolerant mindsets and behaviors. It shows the dialectical and mutually influencing relationship between structures and agents. Structures contribute to shaping agents’ actions, but at the same time, agents also reproduce structures.

Abstract

Government policy on village funds seeks to encourage village independence. Village independence can focus on development based on local potential. Studies on local potential-based village development have not yet explored the issues of social inclusion and community empowerment. This research analyzes the approach to social inclusion and community empowerment in developing local potential in Bahu Palawa Village. Social inclusion and community empowerment are important to study because these two aspects play a role in fostering more equitable, participatory, and sustainable development. This study uses Bennett's theoretical framework (2003) regarding social inclusion and community empowerment. This study uses a qualitative approach using three data collection techniques: observation, in-depth interviews, and document and literature study. Research findings show that the Bahu Palawa Village Government has tried to foster social inclusion and community empowerment in developing local potential. Social inclusion and community empowerment have not been running optimally due to a lack of access to basic services, awareness and knowledge, limited infrastructure, economic inequality, and the ineffectiveness of community empowerment programs. This condition inhibits citizen participation and prevents them from being fully involved in village development. In conclusion, developing local potential requires holistic social inclusion and empowerment development. This can be done through collaboration with a focus on increasing local capacity.
