Abstract

Tourism’s rapid growth in Southeast Asia, particularly in heritage destinations such as Yogyakarta, Indonesia, has intensified concerns regarding environmental sustainability. Understanding why tourists engage in pro-environmental behavior remains a critical yet complex challenge for destination managers and policymakers. This study adopts a fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) to uncover configurations of psychological, situational, and contextual conditions sufficient for green behavioral intention (GBI) among domestic tourists. Drawing on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), Value-Belief-Norm Theory (VBN), and Social Practice Theory (SPT), the study operationalizes five antecedent conditions: ecological attitude (ECOATT), environmental infrastructure perception (ENVINFRA), community engagement visibility (LOCALENGAGE), perceived government support (GOVTSUPPORT), and social media sustainability influence (SOCMEDINFLU). Data were collected via structured questionnaires administered to 400 domestic tourists at key heritage sites in Yogyakarta. Results reveal no single necessary condition for high GBI; instead, six distinct sufficient configurations were identified, grouped into two solution families: (i) motivational–infrastructure synergy, where strong ecological attitudes and digital social influence interact with supportive infrastructure, and (ii) compensatory governance, where policy visibility and infrastructure substitute for weak individual motivation. The overall result demonstrates strong explanatory power, with a solution consistency of 0.823, indicating that the identified configurations account for 82.3% of cases with high GBI, and a solution coverage of 0.597, capturing 59.7% of all high-GBI cases. These findings demonstrate equifinality and causal asymmetry in sustainable tourist behavior, challenging additive assumptions in traditional behavioral models. The study contributes theoretically by extending TPB and VBN frameworks with non-linear, context-sensitive pathways, integrating SPT to explain collective digital and material cues. Practically, the results provide evidence-based recommendations for infrastructure investment, social media campaigns, and policy enforcement to foster sustainability in heritage tourism destinations facing overtourism pressures.

Abstract

The study seeks to build a holistic and evidence-based understanding of how multiple interrelated factors jointly shape sustainable tourism destinations worldwide. Scopus, Google Scholar, and ProQuest searches were used in this systematic literature review, along with a PRISMA-guided snowballing technique. 32 empirical studies published between 2016 and 2025 were found during the review. According to the findings, a complex and multifaceted combination of elements pertaining to visitors, organisation and management, social and community factors, environmental and ecological factors, and destination experiences and attractions all have an impact on sustainable destination development. Sustainability can only be attained by a combination of interconnected elements, aided by cooperation from visitors, managers, legislators, and local communities. By combining empirical data from various contexts and providing useful suggestions for enhancing destination management, policy creation, and community empowerment, this study advances theory. The synthesis offered in this review contributes significant academic value while delivering practical guidance for stakeholders seeking to design more effective and context-responsive strategies for achieving destination sustainability. Future research is suggested to adopt longitudinal and mixed-method approaches, explore simultaneous factor interactions, and expand geographical coverage to enrich global perspectives on sustainable destinations.

Abstract

This study aims to identify best practices of Malaysian integrated zakat governance that can be transferred to Indonesian zakat management reform. This study compares zakat governance in Malaysia and Indonesia using a mixed-methods sequential explanatory design that combines quantitative DEA analysis and NVivo qualitative analysis. The results show that Malaysia achieves 3.2 times higher efficiency through an integrated institutional structure, strong fiscal incentives (including direct tax deductions), and a mature digital infrastructure. The collection of zakat per muzaki in Malaysia reached Rp 9.2 million, compared to Indonesia at Rp 226 thousand, indicating a substantial difference in individual-level contribution. The research develops an Integrated Zakat Governance Model (MTKZ) for Indonesian reform, featuring a federal-coordinated architecture, fiscal reform, integrated digital platforms, and professionalization of human resources. The findings challenge the assumption that zakat management effectiveness depends solely on demographic and religious factors, demonstrating that institutional governance architecture is a critical determinant.
