Abstract

Background: The cardiothoracic ratio (CTR) is a crucial radiological indicator used to assess cardiac size and detect cardiomegaly, particularly in patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes mellitus. Cardiovascular complications are common in diabetic patients and may progress with age. Evaluating CTR differences between age groups in diabetic populations can aid in early risk detection. Objective: To determine the differences in cardiothoracic ratio on chest X-rays between diabetic patients aged above 50 years and those aged 50 years and below at Royal Prima Hospital Jambi. Methods: This retrospective descriptive-comparative study utilized secondary data from chest X-rays of diabetic patients at Royal Prima Hospital Jambi. Subjects were divided into two age categories: ≤50 years and >50 years. The CTR was measured using the standard posteroanterior radiographic method and analyzed statistically to evaluate differences between groups. Results: The study found a statistically significant difference in CTR between the two age groups. Patients over 50 years old had a higher average CTR than those 50 years and below, suggesting an increased risk of cardiomegaly in older diabetic patients. Conclusion: There is a significant difference in cardiothoracic ratio between diabetic patients aged over 50 years and those aged 50 years and below. These findings indicate that age is a contributing factor in cardiac enlargement among diabetic patients, supporting the need for age-specific cardiovascular monitoring strategies.

Abstract

Occupational contact dermatitis remains a prevalent health issue among batik workers due to repeated exposure to irritants and allergens, particularly from dyes and chemical fixatives. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of personal protective equipment (PPE) usage and the application of an emulsion-based formula in preventing occupational contact dermatitis among batik artisans in Muaro Jambi. A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design was employed involving 60 batik workers divided into four groups: control, PPE only, emulsion only, and PPE with emulsion. The incidence and severity of contact dermatitis were assessed using the Hand Eczema Severity Index (HECSI) and patch testing over a 4-week period. Results demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in dermatitis symptoms in the PPE and emulsion combination group compared to the other groups (p<0.05). The use of both PPE and emulsion provided synergistic protection against irritant exposure and improved skin barrier function. This study underscores the importance of integrated preventive strategies combining physical barriers and topical protectants to reduce occupational dermatoses in traditional industries.

Abstract

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a common and serious complication of diabetes that can lead to significant vision impairment and blindness. Placental growth factor (PlGF) has been identified as a key factor in the pathogenesis of DR, contributing to retinal angiogenesis and inflammation. This study aims to explore the role of Curcuma zedoaria extract in modulating PlGF levels and its potential therapeutic effects in diabetic retinopathy. An experimental design was used with diabetic rat models, divided into three groups: a control group (no treatment), a diabetic group, and a diabetic group treated with Curcuma zedoaria extract. The extract was administered for 30 days, and PlGF levels were measured using immunohistochemistry and Western blot. The results showed that Curcuma zedoaria extract significantly reduced PlGF levels in the treated group compared to the untreated diabetic group, indicating its potential to inhibit retinal angiogenesis and inflammation. Furthermore, histological analysis revealed improvements in retinal structure and reduced vascular leakage in the Curcuma zedoaria-treated group, supporting its protective effect in DR. This study concludes that Curcuma zedoaria extract plays a role in reducing PlGF levels, offering a promising therapeutic approach for managing diabetic retinopathy. These findings provide a solid foundation for further research into its clinical applications in DR treatment, particularly in diabetic patients.
