International Journal of Visual and Performing Arts draws its contributions from academics and practitioner-researchers at the interface of new visual and performing arts. It acts as a forum for critical scholarship, innovative practice, and creative pedagogy, addressing themes that may be domain-specific (e.g. theatre, dance, music, live art, visual arts) or situated at the convergence of two or more disciplines. The journal invites original, significant, and rigorous inquiry into all subjects within or across disciplines related to visual and performing arts. It encourages debate and cross-disciplinary exchange across a broad range of approaches. The spectrum of topics includes Ethnomusicology, Karawitanology, Music Education, Dance Theatre, Movie and Television, Interior Design, Industrial Design, Media Arts, Fine Arts, Photography. These topics are addressed in full-length academic articles, critical statements on current issues, developmental practice, and reviews of books and live/media-based visual and performing arts. The journal presents an innovative platform for researchers, students, practitioners and educators to both learn from and contribute to the field. All articles are subject to initial Editor screening and then a rigorous double-blind peer-review process before publication.

Abstract

Dalem Kusumayudhan is a part of the Sahid Kusuma Hotel in Surakarta, and was formerly the residence of Kanjeng Gusti Pangeran Harya Kusumayudha, son of Paku  Buwana X.   It has changed ownership several times and been renovated on a number of occasions.  The last renovation being in the middle of 2008, as part of the owner’s strategy to attract more tourists to visit and stay in the Sahid Kusuma Hotel.The aim of this research is to discover the style and structure of the ornament variations of the singep tumpangsari in the Sahid Kusuma Hotel, and also the philosophical meaning contained in these ornaments, in relation to the culture of the  surrounding community.   It is hoped that the results of this research will be beneficial  for current efforts to preserve and encourage the use of traditional Javanese ornament  variations on buildings today.   The process for collecting and analyzing data and  information uses a qualitative research method.   The descrip- tion of the style,  structure, and the meaning of the ornament variations uses Gadamer’s hermeneutic  phenomenological approach.In general, the structure of the ornament variations on the object of the research complies with the structural norms of the fine arts discipline, namely: unity, pres- sure, and balance.  It is hoped that the discovery of the meaning of these ornament variations will enable others to benefit from the philosophical values contained in the ornament variations in the Sahid Kusuma Hotel, namely: leadership, superior- ity, determination,  strength, and the essence of discovering the meaning of a per- fect life.

Abstract

This research aims to find some answers to the questions: (1) what are the intrin- sic elements of Serat Partawigena written by KPA. Kusumadiningrat like? (2) how was Serat  Partawigena transformed into Lakon Wahyu Pakem Makutharama us- ing reception and inter-textual approaches and the intrinsic and extrinsic elements as well as their transformation were analyzed.The result of the research shows that the text contains an ethic education message to the  descendants and the next generation, especially future leaders.   The intrin- sic elements  of Serat Partawigena contains the element of plot, characterizing, setting, theme and  message.   The setting element covers place, time and atmo- sphere aspect.  The theme element includes the main theme and additional theme. The extrinsic element inSerat  Partawigena contains ethiceducation values which are the requirements for being a leader.  In addition to that, the element also con- tains seven darkness of the world which  have to be avoided by leader and seven darkness which make the body dirty.  The transformation from ofSerat Partawigena in Lakon Wahyu Pakem Makutharama exists in the pattern of plot, characterizing, characterization, setting and ethic education values. Keywords: Serat Partawigena, transformation

Abstract

Balanse Madam dance is traditional dance of Nias Padang society.  Balanse Madam dance  belongs to social dance with the married dancer.   Balanse Madam dance performance  is  accompanied with western music instrument such as drum set, accordion, violin,  guitar, tambourine, drum and tambour.   Balanse Madam dance performance in the  customary event in 2007, was different from the one in 1994. To raise the phenomenon  in  a scientific writing, therefore descriptive qualitative research with observation  technique, interview by means of analysis interaction and data analysis using analysis  interpretation would be used.   It is found that there were form changes in the Balanse  Madam performance, including unmar- ried dancer, dance accompanied by single-organ  and some different term of com- mand from commander.   The differences might be used  by discontinuous inherit- ance system. Keywords: Balanse Madam, comparation, form.

Abstract

The results of the research showed that the art of Pantun Giriwangi Ki Akis is an art  form which is closed related to the ritual ceremonies held regularly by the community  of Baros village in the Arjasari district of Bandung.   In performance, the structure of this art form includes the preparation of offerings, the reading of a prayer, the recitation of a kind of magical spell or incantation, and other elements known as pangambatan,  bangbalikan, and mangkat lakon, or the presentation of the story.  The function of this kind of performance is as a rice ceremony (known as netepken Ibu), an expression of  thanks, or an exorcism ritual.   The symbolic meaning contained in the performance reflects the way of life, traditions, and cus- toms of the local community.   This research  aims to explain the form, function, and symbolic meaning of Pantun Giriwangi Ki  Akis,  contained in the story of Mundinglaya Dikusumah.  An analytical descriptive method was used for the study. This method is a procedure used to solve a problem by describing the object of the research based on the data collected, and then carrying out an accurate analysis of the data.The data for the research was collected using a  bibliographical study, including a study of various literature and audio-visual  recordings.   The main activity of the study was to watch a recording of a performance and then attempt to identify which were the important parts of the performance to be  studied and analysed in more depth.   Additional data was collected through interviews  and documentation.  The art of Pantun Giriwangi Ki Akis is closely related to the ritual ceremonies held regularly by the community of Baros village in the Arjasari dis- trict of Bandung.  This is of great importance since the community believes that by performing  Pantun as a part of these ritual ceremonies, their lives will become better.  The art of Pantun Giriwangi Ki Akis contains a number of symbolic mean- ings which set a good  example to follow and can be used as a foundation on which people can base their  lives. Keywords: Pantun Giriwangi Ki Akis, form, function, symbolic meaning

Abstract

After tsunami, Aceh culture experienced very rapid development, especially rapa’i uroh music which had ever halted due to armed conflict.  The Procession of Aceh peace campaign on 7-8 August 2005 by attending rapa’i uroh music which carry- ing of Aceh peace campaign is the first rise of the existence of rapa’i uroh music in NAD province.In the use of rapa’i uroh music in the context of procession that carrying the Aceh peace  campaign, there are some part obtaining benefits as useful value, such as social value, emotional expression and raises nationalism values, namely: the group of the rapa’i artist  itself, the holders (the local and the central government), and large Acehnese society.In the use of the useful value of the rapa’i uroh music in the procession that carry- ing the Acehnese peace campaign, there are some functions that can be obtained: As Image,  expressing emotion, communication, integrity and cultural symbol.In order this writing contains annalistic explanation, it is required that idea meth- ods  and system with borrowing the concepts of culture, music, integration and social  community to find the symptoms from procession that carrying Aceh peace campaign On  7-8 August 2005. Keywords: Rapa’i uroh, procession, peace campaign
