International Journal of Visual and Performing Arts draws its contributions from academics and practitioner-researchers at the interface of new visual and performing arts. It acts as a forum for critical scholarship, innovative practice, and creative pedagogy, addressing themes that may be domain-specific (e.g. theatre, dance, music, live art, visual arts) or situated at the convergence of two or more disciplines. The journal invites original, significant, and rigorous inquiry into all subjects within or across disciplines related to visual and performing arts. It encourages debate and cross-disciplinary exchange across a broad range of approaches. The spectrum of topics includes Ethnomusicology, Karawitanology, Music Education, Dance Theatre, Movie and Television, Interior Design, Industrial Design, Media Arts, Fine Arts, Photography. These topics are addressed in full-length academic articles, critical statements on current issues, developmental practice, and reviews of books and live/media-based visual and performing arts. The journal presents an innovative platform for researchers, students, practitioners and educators to both learn from and contribute to the field. All articles are subject to initial Editor screening and then a rigorous double-blind peer-review process before publication.

Abstract

This article is the result of a study entitled “A Study of the Meaning of Black and White Paintings by I.G.N. Nurata from1990-2010.” The study takes as its object the black and white paintings of I.G.N. Nurata as a medium of expression, andaims to: 1) describe and analyze the background to the creation of I.G.N. Nurata’s black and white paintings; 2) describe andanalyze the form of I.G.N. Nurata’s black and white paintings; and 3) describe the response of the observer towards I.G.N.Nurata’s black and white paintings. In order to obtain the necessary results, the research method adopted a holistic approachwhich focussed on six of I.G.N. Nurata’s black and white paintings. The method used for collecting data included abibliographical study, participatory observation, documentation, and interviews. The data was analyzed mainly through aninterpretational analysis. Based on the results of the research, it could be concluded that: 1) I.G.N. Nurata’s black and whitepaintings between 1990 and 2000 are visualized strongly in imaginary forms, through traditional visual language andcultural codes, in order to articulate symbolism and metaphors; 2) I.G.N. Nurata’s black and white paintings between 2001and 2010 are still visualized in imaginary form, through traditional visual language and cultural codes, with the addition ofan increasingly intense use of elements of modern visual language such as the use of volume and perspective; and 3) On thewhole, there is a message of harmony between the macro, micro, and meta cosmos, in accordance with the doctrine “Tri HitaKarana” which teaches us how to live in harmony with God, with other people, and with nature, including the spiritualworld.Keywords: Symbols through imaginative form, Visual Metaphors, Black and White Paintings

Abstract

Artikel ini merupakan hasil penelitian tentang film Nagabonar Jadi 2 karya Deddy Mizwar. Pembahasanyang menjadi pokok permasalahan dirumuskan ke dalam beberapa pertanyaan, antara lain: (1) Bagaimanakeberadaan film Nagabonar Jadi 2; (2) Bagaimana alur dramatik film Nagabonar Jadi 2; dan (3) Bagaimana filmNagabonar Jadi 2 apabila dikaji dengan pendekatan estetika? Film (Nagabonar Jadi 2) merupakan medium senihasil kreativitas manusia untuk mengungkapkan tujuannya melalui paduan gambar dan suara. Untukmengetahui maksud dan tujuan yang dimanifestasikan ke dalam paduan gambar dan suara tersebut,maka digunakan metode penelitian kualitatif yang bersifat interpretatif menggunakan pendekatan estetikadari Monroe Breadsley. Pendekatan estetika yang digunakan meliputi tiga tahapan yaitu unity (kesatuan),complexity (kerumitan), dan intensity (kesungguhan). Simpulan yang diperoleh adalah keberadaan filmNagabonar Jadi 2 pada tahun 2007 mampu menjawab kebosanan masyarakat sejak bangkitnya perfilman diIndonesia pada tahun 2007 berkaitan dengan tema nasionalisme dan genre drama komediyang diusung.Alur dramatik film Nagabonar Jadi 2 seperti alur film pada umumnya yang terdiri dari tahap pembukaan,pertengahan, dan tahap penutupan. Estetika film Nagabinar Jadi 2 melekat pada rangkaian peristiwa yangdimanivestasikan ke dalam paduan gambar dan suara, sehingga menghasilkan sebuah tayangan yangmampu memberikan pengalaman estetik yang membuat penonton ikut merasakan suasana lucu, sedih,haru, gembira, serta dapat menyerap maksud dan tujuan yang ingin disampaikan.Kata kunci: film Nagabonar Jadi 2, alur dramatik, dan estetika.

Abstract

Borobudur is one of numerous cultural products in Indonesia. As a cultural object, its existence provides a uniqueattraction as it contains historical value, a source of knowledge, and technology. Viewed from the economic and tourismperspective, Borobudur is a cultural asset which is economically profitable. As a historical object, many studies are stillbeing carried out on its artefacts. This research aims to discover the role of the Borobudur as a “brand,” from the perspectiveof tourism and world heritage. This goal will be achieved through a qualitative research method, by means of a descriptiveanalyticalapproach which focuses in particular on the perspective of imagery as an entity. The research process was based ona discovery and correlation of data in order to accumulate as much information as possible about the “branding” of a touristobject. From a research point of view, the results obtained from this study show that Borobudur is able to act as a tourist objectand destination both for the local community and international tourists. In addition, through various means of promotion asa world cultural heritage, Borobudur has managed to become an icon for religious tourism in Indonesia. This is also related tothe various media which act as a “brand” to form, develop, and create the identity of a tourism entity.Keywords: Borobudur, Brand, Tourism, World Heritage

Abstract

This article discusses the bamboo baskets used for packaging traditional food from Banyumas and the meaning of the visualcommunication on the basket packaging of this food through a semiotic approach. The basket packaging is given a criticalanalysis with an interactional analysis using a semiotic approach. The interactional analysis is used to obtain a connectionbetween all the data collected using ethical research or based on the data found in the library or based on the knowledge andopinions of the researcher. The goal of the analysis of visual communication on the bamboo baskets used for packagingtraditional food from the Banyumas area is to discover the existence of the basket packaging of this food and to analyze andgain an understanding of the visual communication on the baskets used for packaging traditional food from Banyumas. Thebenefit of the analysis of visual communication on basket packaging of traditional food from Banyumas is that it will provideinformation about the visual communication on this packaging that can be used as input and as a reference for the governmentwhen determining policies regarding the packaging of traditional Banyumas food. The character of the brand element on thesix types of basket packaging of traditional Banyumas food that were studied shows the denotative meaning regardinginformation about the name of the food, the taste, the weight, the expiry date, the address of the place selling the food, as wellas other information, through the element of layout, consisting of the colour, logo, illustration, and typography. The connotativemeaning reflects the desires, hopes, and aims of the producers regarding the sale of their food.Keywords: brand, visual brand, semiotics

Abstract

theatre performance contains various ideologies that are promoted by the director as a choice of his workmanship. Thisideology can be seen in the relationship between the text of the script and the performance text. In Teater Tanah Ibu, a workby director Syuhendri, the background of Minangkabau culture is used as the centre of development for the dramatic elementsof the performance that are generated by the role of the women in the performance, and as such, the messages conveyed are fullof the ideology and the message of women’s resistance to the hegemony of Minangkabau men. This paper uses a multidisciplinaryapproach and aims to outline: (1) the process of creating Teater Tanah Ibu and (2) the form of women’s ideologyfound in Teater Tanah Ibu. The observation showed that the ideology of Minangkabau women in Teater Tanah Ibu was bornas the dialectic of women in understanding a migrant culture that reflects women’s ideology.Keywords: Teater Tanah Ibu, Ideology, Women

Abstract

The Slendang Pemalang dance was created by Koestoro in 1985. It is a form of social dance which may be performed asa solo, a duet, or by a group, and uses a scarf or slendang that is tied and used in various ways. The Slendang Pemalangdance was declared a form of regional identity in a decree by the Regent of this area on 17 September 2012. The localPemalang government subsequently adopted this dance as a form to promote its regional identity. This decision is proof thata system has the power to undertake, control, arrange, and preserve the potential expression of its regional art which isintegrated in a symbolic process. This system connects the artist, the Regent, the local government, the tourist board, and thePemalang community in a system of values of its regional identity. The performance of dance at certain ceremonies is used asa tool to display authority. The style of a dance performance as a protocolary substance and ceremony involving the Regentis a form of imaging that is used as a means of increasing the level of authority.Keywords: social dance, Pemalang identity

Abstract

This article is the result of research on the manga style comic Garudayana. This departs from the reality on the ground that inthe last decade the Japanese comics or manga translation once mastered and favored market. However, one of the Indonesianlocal comics, which is able to penetrate the ranks of comic Garudayana translation, and has sales nearly match the success ofJapanese comic translation. It becomes background research on comics Garudayana especially in terms of style of drawing andcomic storytelling style. This study uses the concept of interpretation analysis using McCloud manga storytelling techniques,combined with the power of thought Darmawan over manga. The results of this study are of the form Garudayanacomic style character expression, the transition between panels and word balloons shapes, have a tendency to follow themanga style now favored by the people of Indonesia.Keyword : Manga,comic, Garudayana, Is Yuniarto

Abstract

This article results from research that focuses on study how the Klaten masks. How the symbolic meanings of the Klatenmaska. How the appearce of the Klaten masks Bambang Suwarno’s collection. The aim of the research was to discover andexplain the existence of the Klaten masks, symbolic meanings, and appearce of the Klaten masks Bambang Suwarno’scollection. The method used for the study was a qualitative research method, the interaction analysis approach which wasstructured to cover a historical study, symbolic meanings, and analysis Klaten masks Bambang Suwarno’s collection (Panji,Candrakirana, Klana, Penthul, Tembem), and conclusion. The results was studied of the details as part of the masks likes eyeshape, eyebrows, nose, mouth, ornaments and other. The symbolic meanings of the Klaten masks is the connection betweenthe microcosm and macrocosm embodied in the characters and colors.Keywords: Klaten mask, symbolic meaning, characters.

Abstract

This article is the result of a study about a physical cultural legacy that is also an artistic product left over from the heydayof the Islamic dynasty from the 17th to the 19th century. For this reason, there are two artistic aspects that need to be observedclosely in the analysis of the form, function, and meaning of grave ornaments, namely the aesthetical context or the presentationof the ornaments, including the form and expertise which gave rise to the style, and secondly the context of meaning,including the message and connection of the symbols on the ornaments, or the symbolic value. The investigation of theaesthetical value of the form and function of grave ornaments aims to discover the meaning that has become associated witha particular work, and as such, the existence of the ornaments is analyzed based on an interactional and interpretationalanalysis through an archeological aesthetical approach. The interactional analysis is carried out in order to gain an intersubjectiveinterpretation of the data that is obtained by using ethical research or based either on the data in a bibliographicalstudy or on the knowledge and opinion of the researcher. The goal of the analysis is to discover the form, function, andmeaning of the ornaments on the graves in the cemetery of Bugis kings. The benefit of the analysis is that it shows that theexistence of grave ornaments is not only a form of cultural identity of the local community but also provides a wealth ofinformation that is communicated through the visual symbols found in the patterns or motifs contained in the grave ornaments.Keywords: Form, function, meaning, and grave ornaments.
