Abstract

This article discusses the traditional knowledge of society is the wealth of inheritance obtained from previous generations. The knowledge contains two elements; local elements and elements of Islam. In this element there are beliefs that are associated with supernatural powers, and there are also beliefs that are associated with science. Explanation of these two aspects often cannot be done because of a limited understanding of the culture of the community. Instead of culture that is sustainable, often culture is abandoned because it is considered a prohibited work. Taking examples of activities 40 days after giving birth, this article explains the transition of cultural aspects from belief to knowledge. That is why the response to local culture must be preceded by deepening before any attitude is given.

This article will describe Khitanan culture in Pontianak Malay society to describe the diversity of national culture. Data obtained through interviews and observations in Pontianak. Shows that Khitanan is practiced for baby girls and boys. Khitanan or circumcision is the Islamic Shari'a which becomes sunnah of Prophet Mohammed. Become a requirement for one's perfection in worshiping Allah SWT. For a baby girl it is usually done when the baby is new baby born or at 40 days old by a midwife. For boys they will be circumcised when the age of 8 to 12 years and it is carried out by a mantri (traditional doctor) or doctor. Before boys are circumcised, there are several processions that must be carried out first. Circumcised children also face taboos that should not be violated. After the boy was circumcised, besanji was carried out and the recitation of selamat prayer had been given fluency in carrying out the Shari'a required by religion. The host invites neighbors and families. The food provided is the same at the marriage reception; the difference is when a marriage reception arrange on the tables but in Khitanan event, the food will be arranged on the carpets. Besanji ended the traditional procession of Khitanan culture in Pontianak. This description shows that Pontianak Malay tribe considered Khitanan is important. The procession and series also show differences with Khitanan culture in other regions.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the relationship between humans and nature. Researchers used data from Buang-buang Ae’ tradition discussed in terms of semiotics to see Buang-buang Ae’ Tradition': Relationship Between Humans, Modern Medicine, and Islam in Coastal Communities in Dabong, Kubu Raya, West Kalimantan. Data obtained from the field shows that: 1. A waste of tradition is aimed at treatment, facilitating the birth process so that it is not difficult (difficult) and so that it is not disturbed by spirits. Although now there is community who do not believe anymore, they are still only carried out as a condition or formality. 2. The semiotic of Buang-buang Ae’ tradition is a myth that describes human relationships with nature and the creator that takes place in balance and moderation. 3. From modern medicine, the community has been able to accept the presence of midwives as partners of traditional birth attendants in the labor process for Dabon people, because both of them aim to save the lives of those who want to give birth and their babies. The Prophet Khaidir is considered as a horizontal and vertical axis because the water ruler represents Allah. So that with the tradition of Buang-buang ae' is considered capable of connecting ordinary people with Prophet Khaidir. Moreover, in the pronunciation of word ‘mantra’, there is a sentence of ‘Assalamu ‘alaikum, Prophet Khaidir’ and ‘Bismillahirrahmanirrahim’, which proves Islamization by previous preachers, known as Sufistic Islam or Muslim moderation. There are some informants who argue that the tradition of Buang-buang ae’ contains syirk, but it is limited to the implementation of this tradition.
