Abstract

The research aimed to describe diet composition of Thynnichthyes polylepis. The diet compositions of population from two sites (Mentulik and Simalinyang) in floodplain river of Kampar Kiri, were compared according to the month. Fishes were captured using experimental gillnet and trap. For food habits analysis, the index of preponderance method was used. The collections were performed monthly from July to December 2008, where the stomach contents of 479 specimens were assessed. Prey items of T. polylepis were basically composed of phytoplankton and zooplankton, especially Cocconeis, Nitzschia, Navicula, Cyclotella, Pleurotaenium, and Testudinella. At site Mentulik, the most common items were Cocconeis, Nitzschia, and Navicula. Conversely, at site Simalinyang, Cocconeis, Pleurotaenium, and Nitzschia more representative. In general, main food of fish origin showed the highest index values at Mentulik, whereas at Simalinyang. The composition of items varied monthly, especially at Simalinyang. Food habits of fish may be flexible according to resource availability in spatial and temporal variation.

Abstract

A study was made of the induction of drug-metabolizing enzyme activity and the effect of the induced activity on the duration of oxytetracycline (OTC) in carp, Cyprinus carpio. Carp were fed a diet containing polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)(0,1 mg/100 g body weight/day) for 2 week to induce drug-metabolizing enzymes. After pretreatment, OTC was administered in feed to PCB-treated and control carp as a single dose of 50mg/kg body weight. The result demonstrate that PCB highly induses benzo (a) pyrene hydroxylase among the enzymes of carp, but the induced hydroxylase does not react to OTC, resulting in no change in their tissue levels and duration time.

Abstract

The study was aimed to describe the spawning season of arfak rainbowfish (Melanotaenia arfakensis) in Nimbai and Aimasi streams, both are located in Prafi river system. Sampling was conducted from June to December 2007 and carried out monthly in four different habitat types using hand net. A total of 752 individual specimens were collected and consisted of five developmental stages, namely egg, larvae, juvenile, young and adult. There was no different proportion in both sexes, either habitat type or time. This species has relatively low fecund, producing approximately 23-1,351 eggs with relatively large diameter (0.5-1.3 mm). Large egg diameter was distributed in posterior of ovaries, with 2-3 modes, and presence of atretic eggs, and was indicated as multiple spawner fish. However, based on gonado somatic index, condition factor, presence of eggs and larva in limited period showed that there were increased reproductive activities in both locations from June to September, with low water flow condition. Concentration of reproduction activity during dry season to ensure that larva was produced relatively stable and in benign physical condition. In order to maintain the population of this species, both of these streams should be reserved as their natural habitats, thereby its life cycles could go on.

Abstract

Sedangkan untuk T. lunaris dan T. reticularis masih belum dapat ditentukan musim pemijahannya.ABSTRACTStudy on the gonad maturity of some puffer fishes (Tetraodon lunaris, T. fluviatilis, T.reticularis) had been done from March 2000 to April 2001 in Ujung Pangkah water, East Java. Samples were caught monthly using gill net mesh sized 2,5 and 4,5 cm. Gonads were removed, preserved by formaldehyde 40% and weighed by electronic balances (0.1 g approximately). Gonad maturity stage was classified morphologically according to the gonad classification. Analysis was done to estimate sex ratio and gonad somatic index (GSI). This study aimed to know spawning season of those fishes. Sex ratio of Tetraodon reticularis, T. fluviatilis and T. reticularis werel.6:l. 1.2:1, and 1.9:1, respectively. Immature and premature gonads were found in T. lunaris', immature, premature, maturing, mature gonads were found in T. fluviatilis, with a peak percentage in April: and immature and premature gonads were found in    T. reticularis. Gonad somatic index (GSI) varied 0,04-5.74 (male) and 0.01-3.62 (female) for T. lunaris with a peak one    in    May;    0,01-3,87 (male) and 0,18-2,43 (female) with a peak one in April for T. fluviatilis', and 0,10-0,83 (male) and 0,05-0,57 (female) for T. reticularis. According to the gonad maturity and gonad somatic index, a peak of spawning season was estimated    to be    in    April for T. fluviatilis. While for the T. lunaris and T. reticularis could not be estimated their spawning season.
