Abstract

Over a 12 months period (August 2005 - July 2006), population parameters of Indian anchovy (Stolephorus indicus) in the Inner Ambon Bay was evaluated. The objectives of the present study were to determine the population parameters (growth, recruitment pattern and mortality) of Indian anchovy. Result showed that growth parameters (L”, K. and tj were 12.18 cm, 1.3 and -0.07 year, respectively; the recruitment pattern showed two pulses with two peaks, occuring in March and July; the mortality (Total, Natural and Fishing) were 5.78, 2.73 and 3.05 respectively. These parameters indicated that the Indian anchovy was overfished or over exploited (0.53).

Abstract

The main objective of the study was to determine gonad maturity development and spawning pattern of O. hypophthalmus in floodplain of Kampar Kiri River. Samples were collected from June to December 2006 on a monthly basis. Biological samples were collected from a total of 474 O. hypophthalmus of which 249. females and 224 males were confirmed by macroscopic and histological analysis. Five gonad maturity stages were described based on the macroscopic and histological analysis. The dynamics of oocyte development of O. hypophthalmus, indicated a synchronism of maturation. Oocyte diameter distribution suggested that this species could be grouped as total spawner and iteroparous species.

Abstract

One of' several causal factors contributing to the declining of fish diversity is the introduction of exotic fish or alien species. However, the negative impacts of those exotic introduction still have little attention. We should take the lesson from experience of several country around the world, that the impacts of exotic species introduction are wide enough. These impacts not only causes of the freshwater environment degradation and the genetic deterioration of the host stock by hybridization, also causes the disruption of the native species and help the distribution of diseases and parasites, even causes the socioeconomic hardship for surrounding fishing communities (Welcome 1988). This paper presented comprehensive review of cases and impacts of exotic fish inlroiluelion.

Abstract

Small catfish, Corydoras sp. belongs to family Callichthyidae class Siluridae is very popular among aquarist. This genus consist of many species occurring in South America, but only four have been cultured, C. aeneus, C. paleatus, C.panda and C. sterbai. Beside the small size compare to the other catfishes (maximum 7.5 cm), Corydoras has two rows of hard scales. They are bottom dweller, the optimum temperature 24 - 28℃ (depend on species), pH 7 - 7.5 and hardness about 10℃ dH. It is called “the cleaner aquarium” as they like to clean the wall with their mouth. The reproductive behavior is unique. Before ovulation the female brood stock will attach her mouth to male’s genital called “T position” and will suck the sperm. The sperm will be release pass by intestine together with releasing the eggs, into the “pouch” formed by her pelvic fins. The effective fertilization occurred in the “pouch”. Fertilized eggs will bring to the deposit site, usually in object like plant leaf or rocks which has cleaned by the male. Eggs will be leaved and will hatch there in the optimum water condition.

Abstract

The research on the effect of plant and animal food on various physiological aspect of gouramy fish (Osphronemus gouramy L.) was conducted from January to July 2003. The design used completely randomized design. The treatments were taro leaf, water hyacinth leaf powder, fish, and Tubifex powder. Parameter of experiment was food intake efficiency, growth rate, and specific growth rale. The experiment on food intake efficiency was conducted for one day where as the growth rate and specific growth rate lor five months (150 days). The research showed that the food intake efficiency, growth rate and specific growth rate depended on the specific food given. The highest food intake efficiency of fish was obtained in the fish powder treatment (45.95 ± 2.59%) and the lowest in the water hyacinth leaf powder treatment (22.64 ± 2.70%). Treatment with fish powder increased the growth rate of 0.68 ± 0.08 g/individual/day, and the lowest growth rate in the water hyacinth treatment (0.13 ± 0.05 g/individual/day) during 150 days of observation. The highest specific growth rate of gouramy was obtained in the fish powder treatment (82.50 ± 1.23%) and the lowest in the water hyacinth leaf powder treatment (22.3 ± 0.58%), during 150 days of observation. The highest protein content founded in the fish powder was 66.53% and the lowest protein content founded in the water hyacinth leaf powder was I 7.20%

Abstract

Irian rainbow fish (Melnnotnenia boesemani) is Papua ornamental fish. The culture problem of the fish has been low growth and survival rate, so that needed improvement to their culture method. Recirculation system can be an alternative model for the culture. The aim of research is to recognize growth characteristic of rainbow fish which be cultured on raceway model recirculation system. Oval shape pond used (300 x 120 cm²) by four partitioned, with water height 23.5 cm. Water flow moved by aerator and gravel was used for filter. The fish was stocked about 950 fishes, with length and weight average was 15.6 and 0.18 gram, respectively. Tubificidae was used for feed, in enough quantity. Research duration was two months, except fish observation until three months as support data. Sample of fish (5% of population) was measured their length-weight, and growth parameters was analyzed. Several water quality parameters measured, namely temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, nitrite and ammonia content, and Chemical Oxygen Demand. Water quality condition on suitable during observation. Survival rate of fish reached 79%, growth rate was low (a =0.70% ), and indicated decrease of length growth on third month. Feed efficiency (e) was very low (4.15%) with food conversion ratio 13.4. Length-weight relationship indicated high linier relation (R>0.86) except on beginning observation (R = 0.55). Fish length groups indicated wider distribution parallel to increase of age.

Abstract

Family Melanotaenidae, known as Rainbow fishes consist of six genus and 53 species and distributed in Irian Jaya, Papua New Guinea, and Australia. Those fishes usually found in the river, swamp, or lakes which have clean water at about less than 1,500 in above sea level. The differentiation of the genus based on the shape of the jaw. Genus Melanotaenia has the most species (32 species). Some of them are endemic. The aim of the research is to explain the closely related of five species rainbow fishes: Glossolepis incisus/Gi, Melanotaenia boesemani/Mb, M. lacustris/Ml, M. maccullochi/Mm, and M. praecox/Mp based on the caryotype. The caryotype was examined on 2000. Diploid chromosome number of four species are 48 (2N=48) except M. lacustris lias (2N=46). Based on the Numeric Value of Chromosome Position(NVCP) the chromosome showed the shape were sub-metasentric, sub-telosentric, or telosentric. Analysis of the closely related of the five species studied based on NVC.P and relative chromosome length (RCL). Based on the NVCP showed Mp and Mm were in one group, than followed by Mb. Those three species (Mp, Mm, and Mb) made cne group with Gi. Melanotaenia lacustris has its own group. But based on the RCL analysis showed the different result. Analysis based on the shape of each number of chromosome and Gi as the outer (out group), Ml had the farthest relationship, so Ml has the farthest relationship with the four species.
