Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of Aviation Security officers’ supervision intensity and the clarity of prohibited items information on passenger compliance related to prohibited items at Juanda International Airport. Although previous studies have examined airport security culture, passenger awareness, screening performance, and communication effectiveness separately, limited research has investigated the combined influence of Aviation Security officers’ supervision intensity and the clarity of prohibited items information on passenger compliance, particularly in the context of Indonesian airports. This research addresses this gap by integrating both variables into a single analytical model. A quantitative approach employing Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) was used to examine the relationships among the variables. Data were collected through questionnaires distributed to 100 departing passengers at Terminal 1 of Juanda International Airport using an accidental sampling technique. The results indicate that the supervision intensity of Aviation Security officers has a positive and significant effect on passenger compliance, with a path coefficient of 0.540 and a significance value below 0.05. The clarity of prohibited items information also has a positive and significant effect on passenger compliance, with a path coefficient of 0.608, indicating a more dominant influence. Simultaneously, both variables explain 66.8% of the variance in passenger compliance. The novelty of this study lies in the integration of supervision intensity and prohibited items information clarity within a single PLS-SEM model to explain passenger compliance in the Indonesian airport context, providing empirical evidence that effective supervision and clear information delivery should be implemented simultaneously to strengthen aviation security compliance. These findings offer both theoretical contributions to aviation security research and practical recommendations for airport authorities to improve passenger compliance through integrated supervision and communication strategies.

Abstract

This study was conducted in response to congestion involving Umrah pilgrims and pick-up parties in the arrival area of Terminal 2 at Juanda International Airport despite the availability of an Umrah arrival holding area. Previous studies have primarily focused on airport service quality, crowd management, and Hajj operations, while limited attention has been given to the utilization of Umrah arrival holding areas from the perspectives of information availability and facility accessibility, particularly within Indonesian airport operations. Therefore, this study aims to address this gap by examining the combined effects of these two factors and providing practical recommendations for airport passenger flow management. A quantitative path analysis approach using Partial Least Squares–Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) was employed. Data were collected through questionnaires distributed to Umrah pilgrims and pick-up parties at the international arrival terminal. Information availability and facility accessibility were examined as independent variables, while holding area utilization served as the dependent variable. The data were analyzed using SmartPLS to evaluate validity, reliability, and structural relationships among variables. The findings showed that all indicators met the validity and reliability requirements, with outer loading values above 0.70 and AVE values above 0.50. The structural model produced an R-square value of 0.660, indicating that the independent variables explained 66% of the variation in holding area utilization. Hypothesis testing revealed that both variables had positive and significant effects (p < 0.05), with facility accessibility exerting the stronger influence. These findings demonstrate that improving accessibility and passenger information can substantially enhance holding area utilization, providing practical evidence to support more effective passenger flow management and congestion mitigation at airport terminals.

Abstract

Passenger satisfaction has become an important indicator in evaluating airport service performance because it reflects passengers' perceptions of both operational efficiency and service quality. Previous studies have generally examined airport service quality or airport facilities separately, while limited empirical research has investigated the combined influence of Aviation Security (AVSEC) service quality and departure area facility availability on passenger satisfaction, particularly at Juanda International Airport. This study addresses this research gap by examining the relative contribution of these two variables to passenger satisfaction. This study aims to analyze the influence of AVSEC service quality and departure area facility availability on passenger satisfaction at Terminal 1 of Juanda International Airport. A quantitative research approach was employed using a survey of 120 departing passengers selected through accidental sampling. Data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS.The results reveal that both AVSEC service quality and departure area facility availability have positive and significant effects on passenger satisfaction. Among the two variables, AVSEC service quality has a stronger influence, indicating that passengers place greater value on the professionalism, responsiveness, assurance, empathy, and communication skills of AVSEC officers than on the availability of physical facilities alone. The findings provide practical implications for airport management by emphasizing the importance of strengthening AVSEC personnel competencies through continuous training while maintaining adequate departure area facilities to improve passenger satisfaction. The novelty of this study lies in integrating AVSEC service quality and departure area facility availability into a single research model within the context of airport security services, thereby enriching the literature on airport service management and aviation security.

Abstract

This study was conducted to examine the extent to which the use of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) by the Apron Movement Control (AMC) unit influences personnel compliance with operational safety procedures in the airside area of Juanda International Airport in Surabaya. A quantitative approach was used, employing an associative research design. Data collection was conducted via a questionnaire distributed to 47 AMC officers; the data were then analyzed using SPSS through a series of tests, including validity and reliability tests, classical assumptions, simple linear regression, and hypothesis testing. The research findings indicate that the level of CCTV utilization is classified as high with an average score of 4.34 (on a scale of 1–5), while the level of compliance with operational safety procedures is also in the high category with an average of 4.31. The regression test results yielded a significance value of 0.000 (<0.05), a regression coefficient of 0.824, and a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.777, indicating that 77.7% of the variation in compliance with operational safety procedures can be explained by CCTV utilization. Thus, it can be concluded that the more optimal the use of CCTV by the AMC unit, the higher the level of compliance with operational safety procedures on the airside.

Abstract

The aviation industry requires human resources with professional service communication skills and English proficiency to support interactions with passengers. To standardize English communication in transportation higher education institutions, the Transportation Human Resources Development Agency (BPSDMP) introduced Standard Campus Communication Phrases (SCCP) in 2022. However, Customer Service learning at Aviation Polytechnic of Surabaya has not been supported by contextual supplementary learning materials integrating SCCP, while existing English learning materials generally emphasize language proficiency rather than standardized communication practices in aviation services. Addressing this gap, this study developed SCCP-based supplementary learning material designed for Customer Service course at Aviation Polytechnic of Surabaya. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the 4D model, consisting of the Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate stages. The product was designed using Figma and implemented through the institution’s Learning Management System (LMS). Data were collected through needs analysis questionnaires, expert validation sheets, and interviews with cadets. The results showed that the developed supplementary learning material met the identified learning needs of cadets and achieved a 100% feasibility score based on expert validation of the material, media, and language aspects using predetermined assessment criteria, indicating that all evaluation indicators were fulfilled. Interview findings also revealed positive responses regarding the content, usability, and relevance of the material to aviation customer service communication. The developed supplementary learning material provides a contextual learning resource that facilitates the implementation of SCCP in the Customer Service course and supports the development of English communication competence required in aviation vocational education.
