Abstract

Homophobic bias has been existing in tafsir literature, ranging from its very early works to the most recent ones. Among the aspects in which such a bias appears is that relating to the history of homosexuality. Al-A’rāf ([7]: 80) and al-‘Ankabūt ([29]: 28) are the only verses that talk about the aspect. Rather than following the mainstream tafsir denying the historicity of homosexuality, this article elaborates al-Rāzī’s alternative interpretation on the two verses and comes up with an argument that homosexuality might historically exist even before the lifetime of Lot and his people. Emphasizing on linguistic and literary analysis on the words sabaqa, bi, and fahisya, it finds strong foundations on which the argument is relying. Further, the article finds that it is the sexual politics that brings about the homophobic bias into Qur’an tafsir. The very kind of politics expels homosexuality from the so- called ‘normal’ life.

Lately radicalism in Indonesia is still warmly discussed. This phenomenon is a serious problem for the community. The organizational network of radicalism does not appear to be conspicuous, but if further examined lately the real threat of radicalism reemerged in Indonesia. This can not be separated from the other side of freedom of democrati- zation. This paper will review the develop- ment of radicalism in Indonesia which in fact young people become agents in the process of the birth of radicalism in the perspective of sociology—the identity of young people as the next generation of the nation is at stake; how far they understand the question of radicalism in Indonesia; and youth radicalism can be seen as a response, criticism and antithesis, to orthodoxy and the mainstream that occurs in power relationships that can take the form of violence and nonviolence.

Abstract

In previous research, many scholars concern to study a Hassan Hanafi's Hermeneutic in Qur'an, although Hanafi did not write anything about Hermeneutic or Qur'anic Sciences (Ulum al-Qur'ān). These researchers aware that their research was weak and needed further research. Therefore, this research sought to continue these researches in order to welcome a new book entitled 'Science of the Qur'an' (ulum al-Qur'ān) written and published by Hassan Hanafi recently. The researcher will discover Hanafi's Hermeneutic from the epistemologicly perspective. From this research, we can conclude that the basic assumptions of the Hermeneutics of Hasan Hanafi: that a Muslim should shift their view from the al-Ḥawāmil al-Qur'āniah to the Qur'ānic spirit. Al-Ḥawāmil al-Qur'ānia are the language, the social environment, the geographic places and the historical times of the Qur'an. The Qur'ānic spirit is God's science carried by the Qur'an. The types of approaches that were in the Hassan Hanafi approach to Hermeneutic are: the objective approach or the historical approach, the subjective objectivity approach, and linguistic approach. The source of the Hermeneutics approach at Hassan Hanafi is oral narratives and codified texts.
